Salesian Feasts in the month of May 2015 St. Dominic Savio (May 6) Dominic was born in 1842 at San Giovanni di Riva, near Chieri, Italy. At the time of his first
communion, which he made at the age of seven, he drew up his plan of life: “I will go to Confession
frequently and receive Communion as ofeten as my conferror allows me. I want to santicfy Sundays
and feastdays. My friends shall be Jesus and Mary. Death reathen than sin”.
At the age of twelve he was admitted by Don Bosco to the Oratory in Turin, he asked the saint
to help him to become holy. He was most faithful to his programme, sustained by an intense
sacramental life and a filial devotion to Mary; he was cheerful in his self-sacrifice, and was generously
endowed by God with talents and charisms. He died at Mondonio on 9 march 1857. Pius XI called
him the “little gaint of the spirit”. Pius XII proclaimed him Blessed in 1950 and cononized.
Dominic Savio has given to young people a wonderful example of charity and purity, a tireless
apostle among his companions, and a model of youthful holiness, characterized by joy of heart and the
faithful fulfilment of daily duties.
St. Mary Mazzarello (May 13) Mary Domenica was born at Mornese, Alessandria (Italy) on 9 may 1837, the eldest of seven
children of a hard-working peasant family of sincer Christian life. At the age of 15 years she offered
herself to God with a vow of virginity. Soon afetrwards she joined the association of the Daughters of
Mary Immaculate, committing herself more deeply in apostolic services and works of charity.
A meeting with Don Bosco in 1864 marked a decisive point in her life. The Saint was already
working on an apostolic project for girls, and with the collaboration of Mary Domenica gave rise to the
community of the Daughters of mary help of Christians.
On 14 May 1881, when only 44 years of age, she died at the new Mother House of Nizza
Monferrato, asti. She was canonized by Pius XII on 24 June 1951, and was rightly recognized as Co-
foundress of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.
St. Leonard Murialdo (May 18) Leonard Murialdo was born in Turin on 26th october 1828. Born to a wealthy, pious family.
Studied at the University of Turin, and the college of Saint Sulipice in Paris, France. Ordained in 1851
at the Church of the Visitation. Afetr studies in France, he returned to Italy to take the assignment of
“provisional director” of an improverished college for young working men, he would spend his career
there.
Founded the Society of Saint Joseph of Turin modelled after and under the Patronage of Saint
Joseph, the model for working people; the Society still exists, and still supports young apprentices. He

was affable with everyone and went to great length to help them, his motto being “Fare e Tacere” (Silent
Action). In 1887 he was stricken by an illness that threatened to prove fatal, and Don Bosco, whose
own strength was wellnigh exhausted, went to give him his blessing, he became well again and
continued to work intensely, despite trials and setbacks.
Conclusion:
Thank you dear Confreres for your generous availability for the apostolate in the province.
Kindly reach the New Communities by 26th May 2015. I wish you all fruitful ministry in the new
places assigned to you.
On 24 May we celebrate the feast of Mary Help of Christians. She was the guide to Don Bosco.
His frequent saying was: “She did it all.” May we all have same faith in her as our father and founder
Don Bosco. May she all Guide us in our ministry. Wish you all a very happy feast of Mary Help of
