The day was designed to give the Pfizer team working with a treatment for secondary breast cancer a complete picture of the patient experience through every stage of cancer. Jennifer worked in breakout sessions with Pfizer Oncology colleagues from medical and sales to discuss the patient treatment pathway and gave a lecture to the whole group on diagnostics and surgery. “I hope what came across to Pfizer colleagues was the fact that good communication within the multidisciplinary team is crucial for patients. Many decisions require input from several disciplines simultaneously in order to deliver the best treatment,” said Jennifer. “I wanted to give the Pfizer team some background, so they could understand what the patients have gone through in the past and to put into perspective that, nowadays, many women are cured of early breast cancer. “I hope that the better insight Pfizer gained will help them discuss their medicine sensitively and appropriately with clinical teams, enabling them to identify patients who are most suited to the treatment.” “I think it is important that healthcare professionals and organisations engage with the pharmaceutical industry because only through two-way discussion can clinical need and hence target areas for development be identified.” Jennifer Rusby Jennifer believes that her work with the pharmaceutical industry will help benefit patients. “Companies seem genuinely interested in the disease process and the treatments available and want to develop further medicines or devices that will meet real-world medical need,” said Jennifer. “By engaging with pharmaceutical companies, I hope that my hospital will remain one of the go-to units for companies with new drug developments to meet clinicians and discuss potential future trial collaborations.”

Pfizer UK agrees that collaboration is essential for delivering new medicines to patients.

“The independent, expert knowledge and clinical experience which healthcare professionals provide to the pharmaceutical industry is vital to the development of new medicines and for the improvement of patient’s health,” said Dr Berkeley Phillips Medical Director, Pfizer UK.

“It’s very important that the public feels confident our relationships are appropriate and beneficial, and that’s why we’re committed to transparency. We hope that the healthcare professionals we work with feel the same, and that is why Pfizer has taken the decision that we will only work with those who are happy to share information about our work together in the public domain.

Jennifer was paid for participating in this training day and disclosed her collaboration on Disclosure UK. She donated her fee to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

“Disclosure is important in the current era of transparency. Financial reimbursement or other arrangement may make it more difficult to remain unbiased and consciously or unconsciously affect clinical decision-making. By disclosing relationships, the clinician is reminded of this risk, the company is forced to consider who is selected for such roles and may be more likely to involve a broader spectrum of clinicians, and the public can access this information, as can any audience at lectures on the subject.” Jennifer Rusby

“I decided I would donate my earnings from this event to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity to supplement research funding for studies that I am doing,” said Jennifer.

“I know I am not alone in funding research related activities in this way. It is unlikely that any clinician will earn enough to fund a trial fully, but sometimes a little money is needed, for example, to carry out a pilot study or to fund a ‘patient-public involvement’ event and that money may be hard to come by in the early phase of the research.”

“We know from disclosure conversations we have had with healthcare professionals that not all healthcare professionals profit from the financial relationships they have with us, some have told us that they choose to donate the payments they receive from Pfizer to charity or to their hospital trust, some have told us they use the money to fund further research”. Dr Berkeley Phillips

Jennifer has also worked with a medical device company, sharing her expertise and learning about evidence-based healthcare in breast surgery to improve her own clinical practice and better help patients. She donated the fee she received for this collaboration to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity too.
