Orthopedic PatientsOrthopedic patients, specifically hip and kneearthroplasty, and fractures resulting from falls...

• The BiodexBalanceSystem SD™helps improvebalance, coordinationand muscle tonewhile providingfall riskscreening andconditioning.

• The BiodexGait Trainerencourages patients to reestablish the steplength and speed necessary for step symmetry.Parallel bars and ordinary treadmills don’ttrain proper gait. Both the Biodex Gait Trainerand Balance System SD include visual andauditory cues that have shown to improveoutcomes. Documented reports prove them.

• The Biodex BioStep Semi-RecumbentElliptical Cross-Trainer encouragesneuromuscular effort and endurance. This hasoften deteriorated due to the pain ofosteoarthritis that preceded the surgery, andcan persist through the post-op rehab period, impairing recovery of strength critical to safegait. The BioStep Semi-Recumbent Ellipticalis used to begin strengthening the patient in aprogressive functional manner.

• Biodex Evidence-Based Clinical Protocolsfor orthopedic patients have been developedby leading orthopedic surgeons and physicaltherapists. They are based on known scienceand best practice.

Neurologic PatientsEarly restoration of strength, gait and balance arecritical for achieving positive long-termoutcomes. Proper progressions are actualizedthrough consistent re-evaluation and re-assessment of the short-term goals necessary toachieve the desired long-term functionaloutcomes. This patient population consists ofpersons who are unable to stand or walk properly, and are at risk for developing compensating gaitsthat place them at risk of a fall.

• The Balance System and Gait Trainer helptherapists encourage improved weight-shifting, stance and stride with the affectedlimb, without which patients are at increasedrisk of falls – and both real-time biofeedbackand printed reports help reinforce neededpatient effort.

• The Unweighing System gives strokepatients the confidence that they can followtherapist directives without fear of falling, without using additional therapists to supportand stabilize the patient.

• The BioStep encourages gradualstrengthening of affected upper and lowerextremities, as unaffected extremities canpropel the BioStep until affected limbs re-acquire functionality.

• The FreeStep SAS (Supported AmbulationSystem) bolsters patient confidence byenhancing safety for both patient andtherapist, throughout the rehabilitation area.

Parkinson’s PatientsThis group is at risk of falls due to typical“freezing” and alteredgait - whetherpatients dischargedfrom a hospital as aresult of fall injuries,or those who aresimply unsteady, butfor whom a fall isinevitable.

• BioStep can help Parkinson’s patients breakthe muscle “freezing” that characterizes thedisease.

• For patients deemed a fall risk on the GaitTrainer or over ground, the UnweighingSystem has proven useful.

• The Biodex Evidence-Based Clinical Protocol for neurology patients is consistent with“Management of Adult Stroke RehabilitationCare”American Stroke Association.

Progress Reports graphs overall stability scores foreach test date. Recall patients from the database torepeat tests or rehab sessions. Prior foot position isdisplayed for standardization. These scores can becompared to provided normative data.

“...as in stroke, the

combination of

Gait Trainer enhance

both balance and gait –

both of which are

typically disturbed in

Parkinson’s disease.”

Cardiovascular Patients• The BioStep incorporates both the upper and

lower extremities into the cycling motion;patients experience less local muscle fatigue. Thisallows similar heart rates to be achieved at lower

rates of perceivedexertion when comparedto traditional exerciseergometers. Bloodpressures can be checkedwhile the patientcontinues to exercise by

simply releasing one arm while the other threeextremities comfortably continue to perform theexercise. Patients who may experience legclaudication during exercise can easily reduceeffort in the involved leg, while keeping heartrate elevated, by transferring workload to thenon-involved extremities.

• The treadmill features of the Gait Trainer, including heart rate and MET levelmonitoring, simplify the cardiovascularexercise prescription as dictated by thephysician. The combination of the BioStep andthe Gait Trainer provide a great foundation foryour cardiovascular conditioning program.

Senior Falls

Just about everyexecutive in thesenior residentialfacilities businessis aware that fallsare growing at analmost epidemicrate, the Centersfor DiseaseControl (CDC)Falls Statisticspoint this out:• 75% of SkilledNursing Facilityresidents fall annually

• 28% of those over 65 that break a hip aredeceased within a year

• Less often cited: ~24% of falls result frommuscle weakness or walking/gait problems.

“Reducing the incidence and consequences

of falls is, therefore, a key responsibility of

administrators in residential, assisted and

skilled settings.” Reference: CNA Insurance

And so, the insurer recommends that its clients:• Perform an initial fall risk assessment

immediately upon admission.

• Consistently utilize and revise (as needed) a fall prevention care / service plan for each resident at risk for falls.

• Document efforts to monitor and decreasefalls for residents who have multiple falls.
