Jay Chavda: An artistic heart with the brains of an Engineer. That’s Jay Chavda for you! Be it his hobbies or his profession, he’s always looking for new challenges to take over. He’s been into graphics and designing, since his college days and still continues to strive on. Along Proteus, he looks for opportunities to meet greater challenges and hopes to connect with readers across generations.

Swathi Nair: This Gandhian, other than being a free thinker, an avid debater and a co-editor for her college magazine is also an aspiring blogger, who just started out with “A paradox and a half”, her personal blog and is still learning with her modest beginnings as a writer. She’s a librophiliac who still can’t wrap her head around the idea of an e-book. She’s super-critical about her writing, but loves writing nonetheless and someday hopes to cover real life stories with Proteus.

Meet the Proteans!

Harsh Munshi: Love Music? But still stuck on that last record you heard? Well here’s our quick-fix guy to let you in on what’s new on the music scene. Harsh started out with playing a mouth organ only to graduate to a piano and finally discovering his strum with the guitar. He’s the lead guitarist and composer, who sets the tone for the band, Raahi. An engineer by vocation, he works to make things better and is always interested in something new and innovative to look forward to. Proteus interested his imagination, with its innovative approach to magazine writing and looks forward to many interactive tech and music enthusiasts as readers in the future.

Rizwan Ashraf: A guy who started off capturing moments around 3 to 4 years back using his cellphone, crafting a macro lense on the way, is today a full-fledged photographer, who has won many competitions down the lane, whose works have been featured on various well known platforms. With Proteus, he looks forward to working with a young zeal of creative enthusiasts and reach out to every other youngster out there, who wishes to learn the art of photography, because that's what drives him each day. "Photography is like oxygen to me, I can't survive a single day without the sound of shutter." is how he puts it!

On a musical note! The Ultimate happiness - Harsh Munshi Hello folks! Call it my personal experience or my general observation, the ultimate expression of one’s happiness, trickles down to either music or dance or both. Being involved in music compositions, I know what it means to hear and play different instruments. First of all, let me clarify few things. People say that musicians have their own world. No! Musicians are an altogether different species when they are at work. My fellow musicians would understand this fact and for the rest, I guess, they never belonged to my race anyway. Every artist needs his inspiration, something that drives him to unimaginable Every artist needs his inspiration, something that drives him to unimaginable heights. So here we are with an unresolved puzzle: Why are monsoons so special? Is the answer logical, spiritual, or emotional? Whatever the assertions and reasons may be, but this season is very important from an artistic point of view for me. Be it the kerosene or petrol mixed with the rain-water and children classifying it as a rainbow or the chirping of birds, they all make it altogether a pleasant experience. From the neighborhood uncle who sits in his balcony and enjoys the “bhajiya” to the aunty who goes for a small trek to the nearby temple or a painter who envisions these scenes and paints it down on a canvas, they are all accustomed to their own monsoon rituals!

Everyone has their own definition of happiness and mine surrounds around music and monsoons. To me, it’s the only time to get your mind at work and write as many heart-felt lyrics as you may, because this season makes me feel alive, fills my mind with an enthusiasm to do something new and values my own existence. A perfect season to make music, which you’ll value for life. I surf the streets and yell at every other I surf the streets and yell at every other person passing by. Sure, I don’t know them but I don’t need to know faces just to see a smile across a random stranger. It’s a mind boggling feeling to dance and yell along with the streaming beats of the raindrops.Yes it’s awesome and yes its monsoon!Happy rains!Happy rains!

So this is what I ended up in making the logo for “Chatriwala”. The colour of the logo acts as point of attraction and makes the brand name more balanced when placed in business card, letterheads, and envelopes or even when embossed on the product itself.

You should not play with the fonts of the brand name; always avoid playing with the brand name and making any modifications in the fonts rather, place a logo such that it becomes a part of the name. Here in this case, the logo could have been placed on the top center of the name or on the top extreme right, but the curves of the logo fits perfectly with the first letter “C” so it has been placed on the top left corner of the name which makes a connection with the name.So now we have our logo ready, let’s move towards designing a business card. Practically, So now we have our logo ready, let’s move towards designing a business card. Practically, designing a business card is not limited to just designing, a lot of thought process goes into the same prior to the designing of a business card. The two important factors which must be considered prior to the designing of a business card are:1. Printing requirements of the customer: The design must be compatible with the printing 1. Printing requirements of the customer: The design must be compatible with the printing options of the card. It can be either screen printing or four colour printing. In case of screen printing, you have to ensure that the card must have only solid colours (no gradients) in the design. Screen printing does not support shaded designs. On the other hand, the cost of printing also depends on the number of colours in the design, which adds another limitation in designing the card. While in case of a four colour printing there is no such limitations.2. Texture of the paper: When a design is printed on a specific textured paper it adds value 2. Texture of the paper: When a design is printed on a specific textured paper it adds value to the appearance of the business card. The designer must understand and foresee the appearance of his design when printed on a textured paper, mat paper or a glossy paper.

Though the heart is the birthplace of any art, there has to be mind acting on it to present a masterpiece to perfection. In this section you will experience the journey of the making, the making of one such creation.Monsoon, the word itself stimulates the feeling of love, mischief and of childhood memories Monsoon, the word itself stimulates the feeling of love, mischief and of childhood memories in each one of us. As soon as I came to know that Monsoon is the theme of this month, I was excited to work on this project. Started collecting ideas and suddenly the mind was flooded, with ideas and thoughts, but the one I chose to share with you all is of designing a logo and business card for an umbrella manufacturer. So, let’s begin our first journey.“Chatriwala” is the imaginary name I have selected to design the logo and business card. “Chatriwala” is the imaginary name I have selected to design the logo and business card. The first step should be the designing the logo of the firm. Needless to say that logo shall resemble the name and the product of the firm. Here in this case the logo has to be something that has an essence of umbrella. I personally believe in keeping it simple and compact.

Graphics Arena! How to design a visiting card - Jay Chavda

Page 33: Proteus - July 2013

Graphics Arena!Let us consider, that there is no specific requirements or limitations of the customer, then the business card I would deliver would look like picture [1]:

You should always avoid filling the business card with tonnes of stuffs. Remember! Business cards are just to share contact details, don’t make it a catalogue. On the other hand, the empty space of the cart has to be smarty used; the card must not look empty or imbalanced. Here I have used the replica of the logo on the top left corner of the card which not only fills the empty space but provides uniqueness to the card.

I personally believe in the simplicity of the design, though customers do not always feel I personally believe in the simplicity of the design, though customers do not always feel the same, so if I have to make this business card funkier, I would use an image as a background. Something like water splash or fine droplets, and then the card would look something like shown in picture [2].

Remember! The designs which look ok on your computer screen might not be as attractive when printed. The reasons are: the brightness and contrast of your computer screen and that of actual printing are different. The scale of the image you see on the screen and actual printed version are different and the texture of the paper plays and even important part in the final outcome as it value to the design.

Here in our case, the first design will look attractive on a plain mat paper, although it can Here in our case, the first design will look attractive on a plain mat paper, although it can be printed on glossy paper or textured paper too. However the second design will best suit when printed on a glossy paper, and will lose its charm if printed on a textured paper. These factors have to be visualized by the designer for the best outcome of their efforts..“Connect your heart to your mind and your art will be your masterpiece”Note: The names and information used in the designs are imaginary.© all designs are copy right work of klicks n kurves design studio used for the information © all designs are copy right work of klicks n kurves design studio used for the information and learning purpose, these designs shall not be used for any commercial use.
