IntroductionThis manual providebasic informationabout settings necessary for runningof Scia applications

This manual provides informationabout both floating (network) andstandalone (dongles) protection.

Standalone protectionThebiggest changewith respect to theprevious version is that starting from version2010 thedonglemust beaccompaniedwith LICfile and in somecases alsoE2C file. Dongle itself is not sufficient for starting theSciaEngineer.

This changegives us possibility to providemore flexible licensing solution including time limited licensing, editions etc…

Tosimplify as muchas possible updatingof dongles, workingwith dongle onmore computers andother similar use cases it is pos-sible to downloadLIC andE2C files online from theScia server. (see the chapter related toProtection setup)

Compatibility with older versions: Thesamedongle canbeused to runEPW, older versionof SciaEngineer (up to version2009.0) andnew versionof SciaEngineer (from version2010.0).

Floating protectionSciaFloatingprotection is basedonFLEXnet technology of FlexeraSoftwareCompany. This typeof licensing stores commercialmodules in “Trusted storage” on theLicence server. Thosemodules canbeused (Checkedout) by Scia applicationonlineor bor-rowed (offlineusingof modules from licence server).

FLEXnet basedprotection fully replaces FlexLMbasedprotection from version2010.0.

Compatibility with older versions: Older versions of SciaEngineer (FlexLMprotection) canbe runwith new FLEXnetlicence server. In this case themodules areprovidedby the licence server only if theFlexID dongle is attached.

Trial, Student and Viewer modesFrom theversion2011 it is possible to runSciaEngineer without protectionas SciaViewer. In this caseSciaEngineer has limitedfunctionality. It is intended tobeused for viewingof calculated structures only. In versions starting from 2010 theuser canalsouse“TRIAL” or “STUDENT”modules whicharealso freebut still require somemodules.

Student version

Standaloneprotection

Standalone protectionStandaloneprotection is facilitatedby Sentinel Safenet dongles.

New user – activity on user’s sideWhenahardware lock (dongle) is used for theprotection, the followingprocedureneeds tobe followed:

- Installationof theSentinel Protection Installer

- Attaching theSentinel Dongle

- Import LIC file (andE2C file in caseodeditions) in “Protection setup” utility

Note: All mentionedactions areusually doneautomatically during the installation. Following steps aredescribed for spe-cial cases whenuser needs to perform themmanually.

Installation of the Sentinel ProtectionTheSentinel Protection Installer provides for communicationbetweenSciaEngineer and theSentinel dongle.

In the Installation & Software menu of the installationDVD choose theoption Install Sentinel Driver. Follow the installationinstructions on the screen.

TheSentinel Protection Installer canalsobe installedmanually by executing the fileX:\Tools\Sentinel\Sentinel ProtectionInstaller 7.* .exewhereX represents theDVD driveand * the versionnumber.

Note: Whenanolder versionof theSentinel SystemDriver or theSentinel Protection Installer has already been installedon the computer, this older versionmust first bede-installed through theControl Panel before installing thenewSentinelProtection Installer.

Attaching the Sentinel DongleTheSentinel hardware locks areavailable for USB ports. Attach thedongle to a freeport of the computer.

Importing of new LIC fileEachdongle needs to beaccompaniedwith theLockId.LIC file to provide licenses. Toget this file on theuser's computer is it nec-essary to do the following:

1. attach thedongle to computer2. runProtection setupdialogue3. press [Import licence file]

Then theProtection setup tries to connect toSciaActivation server anddownloadnecessary LIC file. If the file cannot bedown-loaded from the internet it canbesent via email and thenopened from thedisk. Theopen file dialogue is openedautomatically whenthe internet download fails.

The followingmessagewill appear after successful import of licence file anduser can see the list of his commercial modules in the“Expand”modeof Protection setupdialog.

Note1:Automatic import of LIC file from theScia protection server canbedonewith attacheddongle only.

Note2: Import of LIC file canbedoneonly if theuser is loggedwith the rights towrite intowith Licence file (seeSetup /Options / Directories)

Note3: It is possible to change thepath to the folder where the licence filewill be imported inAdvancedsettingdialogue(right click on theheader of Protection setupdialogue).

Note4: It is possible to disable automatic downloadingof LIC file from theScia protection server inAdvancedsettingdia-logue (right click on theheader of Potection setupdialogue).

Checking the Sentinel DongleTomakesure theSentinel Dongle has been installed correctly theSentinel SuperProMedic canbeused.

Installation of Sentinel SuperPro Medic

1. UsingWindows Explorer go toX:\Tools\Sentinel\ whereX represents theDVD drive.

2. Execute the fileSuperproMedic.exeand follow the instructions on the screen.

3. By default theSuperProMedic is installed in the folder C:\ProgramFiles\Rainbow Tech-nologies\SuperPro\Medic

Checking the Sentinel Dongle

1. UsingWindows Explorer go toC:\ProgramFiles\Rainbow Technologies\SuperPro\Medic

2. Execute the fileSuperproMedic.exeTheSuperProMedic appears on the screen.

3. In theupper right corner of theSuperProMedic the versionof the installedSentinel Driver is shown. Whennoversion is shown theSentinel Protection Installer needs to be installedas describedearlier.

4. In the fieldServer Name/IP orModechoose theoptionSTANDALONE

5. Next press [FindSuperPro] to search for correctly installedSentinel dongles. A dialogbox appears showingthenumber of keys found.

6. WhennoSentinel dongles are found, press [Medic Says] to receiveextra information in order to find thecauseof theproblem.

When theSuperProMedic indicates that theSentinel dongle has been found, then this means thedongle is attachedcorrectly to aparallel or USB port and theSentinel Protection Installer has been installed correctly.

Upgrade of dongle – existing userAfter buyinganew versionof SciaEngineer or newmodules users needs to updatehis Licence file using [Import licence file] buttonin theProtection setupdialogue–seeprevious chapter.

Followingmessagewill appear after successful updateof Licence file.

When theuser uses somepredefined sets, hewill need toupdatemodules in those sets (addnewmodules).

Time limited dongleTime limited licence is available also for dongles.

It is possible to set different time limitation (different number of days) for each commercial module in theLIC file. Thenumber ofdays is calculated from themoment of importing theLIC file by user in theprotection setuputility. During the import of LIC file, thecurrent date is written into thedongle (number of days is stored in theLIC file).

Thenumber of remainingdays (excluding the current day) for time limitedmodule is displayed in the list of modules. Once the timelimitation is exceeded, the licence is displayedas “Expired” andwill not beavailable during start of SciaEngineer.

Note1: Thedate in thedongle is changedonly if the counter of LIC file is higher that the counter in thedongle (to preventprolongingof time limited versionby repetitive ImportingLIC file by theuser).

Note2: It is not necessary to sendnew dongle to theuser to prolong is time limited version. Only performingof [Importlicence file] fromProtection setup is enough

Note3: If there is “0 day(s) to expire” it means that this is the last day themodule canbeused.

Note4: In caseof usingmoredongle, thenumber of available days is comparedwith thedatewritten in thedongle linkedwith theLIC file.

Using of more dongles togetherUser canuseas many dongles as hecanattach to the computer. TheLockID numbers of all attacheddongles aredisplayedat theheader of protection setuputility.

In the list of available commercial modules is displayed the sumof modules from LIC files related to all attacheddongles. Finally thesumof modules from LIC files related to all attacheddongles canbeused inScia application.

Note1:[Import LIC file] can be done also with more attached dongles but it is strongly recommended to doit with just one dongle attached.

Note2: It is possible to usemoredongles with different time limitation. In case that somecommercial module is in all LICfiles, theonewith longer time limitation is taken into account.

Moredetailed informationabout general managingof licence server canbe found in LicenceAdministrationGuideprovidedby FlexeraSoftware.

Supported operating systemsLicenceserver canbe installedon followingoperating systems

Description of floating protectionScia floatingprotection is typeof network protection. It is basedon theFLEXnet technology of FlexeraSoftwareCompany. Mod-ules are stored inTrusted storageon theLicence server in caseof this licensing. Thosemodules canbeusedonline (checkedout)or they canbeborrowedandusedoffline. On the licence server thereare storedall modules andeditions.

TheScia LicenceServer canbe installedonany computer in the client's network. This means that it does not have tobe thedomainor file server.

Eachof modules on theScia LicenseServer canhavedifferent amount of licenses, which canbestarted simultaneously. Theusercandeterminewhichmodules hewants to use (viaProtection setupdialogue) andwhichmodules will remainavailable on the serverfor other users.

FLEXnet protection fully replaces FlexLMprotection in new versions (from 2010.0).

Managingof licence server is newly (from version2012) doneby lmadmin.exe. This manager has webbaseduser interfacewhichwill bedescribed later.

Components used in Scia floating licensingScia floating (network) licensing consists of following components:

l Application (e.g. Scia Engineer):This application is a client for theScia LicenseServer. Settingof protection is doneinProtection setup (lockman.exe).

l Trusted storage on End user’s machine (Application TS): It is Trusted storageonenduser’s machine. Herearestoredmodules borrowed from client’s licence server. Nouser's action is needed to install anduseapplicationTS.

l Vendor daemon: It is theSCIA.exe filewhich is locatedonclient’s licence servermachine. Vendor daemon is part ofLicence server which communicates with applicationandadministrates requests formodules. It is installed together with

theScia LicenseServerl Trusted storage on server machine (Server-side TS): It is trusted storageonuser’s licence servermachine. Here

are storedmodules whichuser has activated. Thosemodules are thenenabled to user’s application viaSCIA daemon.l Scia Activation Manager: application locatedonclient's licence server. It is used toactivate (deactivate)modules on

client's server fromSciaActivation server.l Scia activation server:This server is operatedby Scia. It is locatedonourmachineandcommunicates directly with our

databasecontaining informationabout modules bought by our clients. It proceeds activation, return andother requests

from client's Activationmanager andsend responses to them. Thedomainnameof theactivation server is: acti-

vation.scia-online.com

Trusted storage - overview

The trusted storage is spaceon the licence server where informationabout activatedmodules is stored. This storage is securedagainst unauthorizeduse.

Trusted storagecontains license rights for FLEX enabledapplications.

Important: Somecomputer identities areusedas bindings for securingTrusted storage. It is strongly recommended to returnlicenses toScia activation server beforeany (SWorHW) changes on licence server.

In somecases whensecurity rules are violated the trusted storagebecomeuntrusted. It canhappenby legal actionbut alsoby ille-gal attempt to unauthorizedusageof the licenses. In such casenomodules areprovidedby the licence server anduntrusted licenceis marked inTheActivationmanager (see further). Licenceadministrator should contact Scia support in this case.

Compatibility with older versionsOlder versions of SciaEngineer (FlexLMprotectionbasedon *.DAT file) can read license from newScia LicenceServer.

New versions of SciaEngineer (2010and later) requires Scia LicenceServer with versionof FLEXnet 11.8 or newer. It is rec-ommendable to use latest versionof Scia LicenceServer providedby Scia.

In caseof using licence server with older versionof FLEXnet than11.10 together withScia engineer 2012 (or latest patchof 2011.1)there canbeproblemwith correct interpretationof "@localhost" address. In this case it is recommendable to upgradeScia Licenceserver to latest versionor useexact IP adress (127.0.0.1) in theProtection setup.

Installation of Scia License ServerInstallationof Scia Licence server is part of the installationDVD. It is necessary to go throughall steps only. Nospecial input isneeded.

Thedefault pathwhere theScia Licence server is installed is c:\ProgramFiles (x86)\CommonFiles\SCIA\LicenceServer\ (canbedifferent for different OS).

Activation of modules on Scia License ServerToactivatemodules onScia License server user needs to receive theLID file fromScia andgo through following steps:

1. RunSciaActivationManager

2. Makesure that FlexID dongle is attachedandworkingproperly3. Press [Read Licence ID]andselect theLID file using the “Open file dialog”4. Select the licence in the list of licenses by clickingon the licencenumber5. Press [Activate Licence]6. The informationmessage is displayedafter successful activation7. SciaActivationManager canbeclosednow

Activated licence is indicatedby thegreen icon.

After the successful activation it is necessary to restart the Scia License server.

Upgrade of user’s versionWhenuser buys newmodules, it must be indicated inScia database. Then theuser (or his IT administrator) needs to updatelicenses onhis Scia LicenseServer.

Theupdateof modules on theScia License server consists of twosteps:

1. Return current modules from user’s trusted storage toSCIA activation server (return request)2. Activatemodules fromSCIA activation server (it will beactivated includingnewmodules)

Those twosteps canbedonemanually or at onceby pressing [Reload licence].

Note1: The licence server is configuredautomatically during the installationof Scia LicenceServer. In usual cases the fol-lowing steps aredoneautomatically.

Note2: Moredetailed informationabout general managingof licence server canbe found in LicenceAdministrationGuideprovidedby FlexeraSoftware.

2. start Internet browser andnavigate to http://serveraddress:8080 (e.g. http://localhost:8080)

3. Click on [Administration] and sign in (for the first login use "admin" for usernameandpassword)

4. Go to "Vendor daemonconfiguration" andclick "Administer"

5. In the "General configuration" section it is necessary to havecorrect path to licence file (Scia_Software.lic or *.DAT)

andcorrect path for the vendor daemon (Scia.exe).

Vendor daemon port is theport which is used for communicationbetweenscia.exeand lmadmin.exe. it is not used forcommunicationbetweenSciaEngineer and licence server.

Restart retries specifies whether the licence server will beautomatically startedafter restart of licence servermachine

(also restart after sleepmode). Put here the value 1 to enable automatic restart of license server .

6. In the "Vendor daemon log" section it is possible tomodify thepositionof log files or show the log file.

7. Changes in configurationmust besaved

Once thedaemon is configured correctly, it canbestartedusing the "Start" button.

Runningdaemoncanbestoppedusing "Stop" button. Or it is possible to reread the licence file.

Checking the status of licence serverThestatus of Scia Licence server canbecheckedon the "Dashboard" of thewebbased interface. It is possible to seealerts andwarnings hereand to seewhich licenses areavailable at the server. Thereareprovided informationabout availability, expirationorcurrent users (Hosts) for eachmodule.

Setting of protection in Scia applications

Standalone protectionThesettingof Protection is done is Protection setupdialogue (lockman.exe). In themost cases user needs just to select "Onlystandalone" typeof protection. This selectionensures that all modules from attacheddongle andLIC file areused.

User can check list of his modules in "Expanded"modeof theprotection setup.

Settingof protection inScia applications

In case the list of modules is empty or outdated it canbeupdatedusing [Import licence file] button. (see chapter related toUpgradeof existingusers).

Floating protectionThesettingof protection is done inProtection setupdialogue (lockman.exe).

In theProtection setupdialog theuser needs to set protection type to “Floating” and fill in the correct port andpath to Licence server.(e.g. 27000@localhost or 27000@my_server_name). The list with available commercial modules is displayedafter pressing[Apply/Refresh].

Usermust select modules whichhewants to use inScia application. Selections of modules canbealso savedas "Sets". Thosesets canbe thenquickly accessed in combobox "Sets of modules".

Settingof protection inScia applications

BorrowingBorrowingenables to theend-user to take somemodules from Licenceserver to his local computer anduse themalsooffline. Theborrowing is done for specified time (maximal onemonth). After this timeborrowedmodules areautomatically returnedback toSciaLicence server.

Note1: If theuser wants to useborrowing, it must beexplicitly enabledby Scia. Theborrowing canbeenabled for eachseparate commercial module (edition/ package).

Borrowingof modules is controlled fromProtection setuputility:

Modules which canbeborrowedare indicatedby the<B> (since the version2011).

If theuser wants to borrowmodules, heneeds to select (check)modules hewants to borrow andpress [Borrow selected mod-ules] button. Thenhe is asked for number of days (calendar). All modules that are currently selected (checked) areborrowed (if it isallowed for them).

Successfully borrowedmodules are indicatedby the text with time remaining to automatic returningof modules (since the version2011).

In case theborrowing is not anabled for selectedmodule thewarningmessage is received.

If theuser wants to borrow somemoremodules (or other selectionof modules) thenhehas to return currently borrowedmodules atfirst. After returninghecanmakenew selectionof modules andperformBorrow actionagain.

Note: The “early return” is possible only if theend-user is connected to his Scia Licence server.

List of protection related tools

Protection setupTheprotection setup is a separate utility. It canbe launchedusingLockman.exe. This is basic tool for end-users to configure theirlicensing.

User can select oneof the followingprotection types:

1. Trial – it runs SciaEngineer inTrial mode if there is a “TRIAL”module in the local trusted storage (local Scia Licenceserver)

2. Only standalone– reads modules only from thedongle andLIC file3. Only floating – reads modules only from theScia Licence server4. First standalone then floating –Selectedmodules are takenprimarily from the standalonedongle. If someselected

module is not available at thedongle it is taken fromScia Licence server

5. First floating, then standalone– try to readmodules fromScia Licence server, if it is not accessible, thenmodules are

taken from dongle6. Student – it runs SciaEngineer inStudent mode if there is a “STUDENT”module in the local trusted storage (local Scia

Licence server)

If thedongle is attached then its LockID is displayed in theheader of thedialog.

When the floatingprotection is selected, thenusermust specify thepath to his FLEXnet Licence server.

At thebottom of thedialog there is the list with commercial modules whichareavailable in theLIC file or on theuser's Scia Licenseserver. Here theuser can select modules whichhewants to use inScia application. Theselectionof modules also canbesaved toSets.

Sets arepredefined settings of commercial modules. They are stored in files inUser\protection\Sets directory. In theProtectionsetupdialog theuser can choosebetweenexisting sets of modules in the combobox. SETs are intended tobeused for floatingpro-tection (tomakeselectionof modules easier), however, it canbeusedalsowith standaloneprotection.

[Save set of modules] saves the current selectionof modules into defined set (thenameof the set is according to file namespec-ifiedby theuser).

SciaEngineer canbestartedwith specific predefined set of modules (i.e. selectionof modules). This featureenables theuser to switchbetweenpredefined set of modules without startingProtection setup.Thesyntax is: esa.exe /Custom_filter_file_namewhere "Custom_filter_file_name" represents thenameof thepredefinedset of modules. If spaces areused in thenameof the set the syntax is esa.exe "/Ccustom filter file name".

[Import set of modules]modify the current settingof modules according to selected set, but does not change thenameof the cur-rent set.

It canbealsoused for importingSETs from another computer (e.g. if preparedby IT administrator on the server). After the importtheSET is copied toUSER\Protection\Sets directory andcanbeused.

[Remove set of modules] deletes current set.

Note1: Files withSets canbemanipulated (copy, delete, edit) alsomanually.

Note2: Numbers next to commercial module are valid only for floating licensingandmean: total number of modules on theserver / available number of modules at themoment.

Eachcommercial module in the list canbeexpanded (by double-click). Then the technical modules contained in the commercialmodule are listed.

Changing of path to the licence folder from Protection setup

It is possible to change theway to thedirectory with license file fromProtection setupdialog

Use right-mouse-buttonon theheader of thedialogandstart Advancedsetting. Thenyoucanenter different path to thedirectorywith licence file.

Displaying of usage of some module from Protection setup

This feature is available for the floating licenses only.

To learnwho is currently using somemodule, use right-mousebuttonabove themodule andpress “Show list of users. Thenyoucanseewho is using themodule.

Scia Activation manager

This utility needs to be installedonuser’s licence server. Its installation is part of Scia Licence server installation.

Theutility is intended tobeusedby client’s licenceadministrator. It enables to administrate licenses onScia License server. Fol-lowingactions areavailable:

l Add new license (one licence represents oneLockID) in the listl Delete license from the list

Andalsoperform transactions withSCIA Activation server

l Activatea licensel Return a licence toSciaActivation server (canbe lately again freely activated).l Repair damaged trusted storage - it must beexplicitly allowedby Scia.

Note: It is recommended to return licenses toSciaActivation server beforeany changes of client's licence servermachine. it will prevent damagingof the licence.
