While most people are honest and reasonable, there are some individuals out there who see the con-struction on their property as a golden opportunity to get “other things” taken care of by blaming the crew for damaged items that were damaged well before you ever stepped foot on the property. Things like cracked sidewalks or driveways and dented garage doors can easily be blamed on the crew during construction even if they didn’t do it.

This puts you as the project manager in a very tough position, because while you may strongly believe that the issue was preexisting and that your crew is not responsible for the damage, if you are unable to prove it, you are likely stuck biting the bullet to avoid bigger issues. So how do you protect yourself and avoid being victimized?

First of all, ensure that potential hazards are removed before construction begins. Have the customer’s vehicles parked in the street, not in the driveway. Next: Take photos and an inspection video! Taking pictures can save your ass, for lack of better words. Any time you are planning on doing construction at anyone’s property, arrive days before construction ever begins and take pictures of the following things:
