About Us

"A college with a difference" as envisioned by the former chairman Managing Committee Dr. S. S. Johl, renowned agricultural economist, policy maker and educationist, A.S.S.M College, Mukandpur has been at the vanguard of academics since 1994. Our mission is to provide value based education & training to the rural youth. Under the guidance of a visionary like Dr.S.S.Johl who was honoured with Padam Bhushan by Govt. of India and has served two universities as Vice Chancellor, the college grew by leaps and bounds. The institution was established in the memory of Amardeep Singh Shergill, an illustrious student of London School of Economics, who passed away in the prime of his youth. He was the only son of Mrs. Surinder Kaur and S. Gurcharan Singh Shergill, NRI’s from England. Instead of taking recourse to grief, the parents found comfort and solace in serving the noble cause of spreading the light of knowledge amongst rural youth. With the cooperation of veteran S. Sadhu Singh Shergill and Dr. Amarjit Singh, the bereaved parents decided to open a college in their native village Mukandpur. The Trust, College Overseas Committee and NRI friends Managing Committee, Principal and Staff worked together in harmony to achieve the objectives and took the college to the zenith.

The college is approved to get grants under section 2(F) and 12(B) from the U.G.C. The management did well to create an infrastructure of highest standards. The triple storeyed main building of the college encompasses all the facilities necessary for imparting modern education. It houses a double storeyed library, which has more than 25000 books on its open shelves. 15 Newspapers and 40 magazines, journals and periodicals adorn its stands. The library has an E-Book section also. The students can view the educational C.D’s in the library. Our students have access to 51000 e-books and 2100 e- journals through Inflibnet. Separate dedicated broadband internet lines and Photostat machine also available in the library. Latest equipments like O.H.P. multi-media, T.V., Stereo, and DVD etc. are employed as teaching aids. The college also has Chemistry, Biology, Home Science, Child Care, Music, Physics, English, Dress Designing and Automobile Maintenance and language labs. There is a separate Computer and I.T Centre, which has five state of the art Computer Labs with 127 computers & Internet service. There is a separate Seminar Hall with a seating capacity of 170 persons. Gymnasium with its latest imported machines is a cynosure of all the eyes. Darshan Gill Sports Complex with a track of four hundred meter has playfields for Football, Hockey, Volleyball and Handball. Close circuit cameras and public address system has been installed recently.

The Principal resides in college campus. Teachers are also provided accommodation in 24 beautifully built flats. A Multi-purpose Hall for indoor games and other gatherings. Girl’s hostel has been providing its services since 2005. Computers and broad band internet connection is available in the hostel. A fleet of nine buses carries the girl students to college daily. A generator is installed for continuous power supply during power cuts. The beautiful open-air theatre helps our students to nurture their academic and cultural capabilities .We perform considerably well in the youth festivals and win a number of prizes. This year we won runner’s up trophy, ‘A’ division in zonal youth festival of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. In sports, the college has already won the University Championship for five consecutive years in ‘B’ Division. Our weightlifters have excelled at the national level winning top slots. Free of cost wrestling coaching in collaboration with Harbans Singh Purewal Sports and Education Academy is being started from this session. Our publications include college magazine “Amardeep” published annually and this year our college published two books namely ‘Guru Har Rai ji- Jeevan Ate Asthan’ and ‘AIDS-Karan Ate Bachao’.

The college offers five P.G. courses namely M.C.A (TYC), M.B.A(TYC), Economics, Punjabi and Information Technology. Admission in M.C.A and M.B.A is accessible through MET-PAM-CAT test conducted at state level. It also offers B.A., B.C.A., B. Com. and B.Sc. courses in Medical, Non-Medical, Economics and Computer Science. Vocational subjects like Functional English, Computer Applications, Early Childhood Care and Education and Automobile Maintenance are offered at degree level. Add On Courses offered are Data Care & Management (I.T.), Early Childhood Care and Education, Automobile Maintenance and Insurance & Risk Management. In addition we have P.G. Diploma in Computer Applications and P.G. Diploma in Financial Services (Banking & Insurance). Certificate Course in Dress Designing, Cutting and Tailoring is conducted under the aegis of department of Life Long Learning of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Our students have bagged top positions in the university in M. Sc. (I.T.), M. B. A. and M. C. A. consistently since their inception in the college.

The institution is expected to grow into a Rural Regional Campus of Guru Nanak Dev University. Professional courses like B. Tech. (Electronics), B. Tech. (Computers), B. Tech. (I.T), other Post Graduate & research oriented courses would be started in the years to come.

Admission Guidelines

Each student seeking admission to the institution must obtain a college prospectus with form. It contains an application form for admission, which must be duly filled in legible writing by the student. The following documents should be attached with the application form for admission:

1. Certificate of Matric or 10+2 showing date of birth.

2. Detail marks of previous class passed and Internet copy of result.3. Registration card (not for first year students).4. Character certificate5. If the student has passed the lower examination from any University/Board other than Punjab University/Punjabi University/Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, he/she has to produce migration certificate from the concerned Board/University/Punjab Domicile Certificate/Attested copy of selection list of entrance test (if applicable) to the college up to 25-7-2011 for getting Eligibility Certificate from Guru Nanak dev University, Amritsar failing which the student will be penalized Rs.250/- up to 1-8-2011 and Rs.500/- thereafter as directed by the University and thereafter his/her candidature will be cancelled.

Student who has passed SSC-II from National Open School, New Delhi, with four subjects (including English), minimum two years after matric, can be given admission in B.A./ B. Sc. (Pass course)/B. Com only on provisional basis. They will have to pass fifth deficient subject in the coming supplementary or annual examination. Failing which the admission will be cancelled.

Note: Incomplete form will not be entertained for admission.

Special Note: The Principal has the discretion to permit or deny admission in any subject/subject combination/option/course/college to any student .

GENERAL RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMISSION

1. The student, whose result is declared late by the Board/University, can get admission within 10 days (from date of declaration of result) without any late fee.

2. Failed students from other institutions will not ordinarily be entertained in any course.3. The cases for which there are no prescribed rules by Board/University/Institution, the

Principal has full decisive powers.4. College has right to correct the combination if a student chooses or is allowed a

wrong subject combination by mistake.5. College has right to change or close any subject/faculty/subject combination, If the

number of student is less than ten.6. Admission to the streams of Science and Commerce will be merit-based and failed

students will not be entertained.7. The age limit for students of B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. I will be 20 years.8. The student with compartment in 10+2 or graduation (B.A./B.Com /B.Sc / B.C.A III) can

not be admitted in higher courses. If a student clears compartment with in late fee

dates then he/she can be admitted with late fee. Result obtained from internet is not valid but if a student gets secret copy of the result then he/she can be considered. Date of declaration of result will be considered valid not the date of issue of detail marks card.

9. If the enrolment in any subject in B.A. I reaches 60 the college can deny a particular subject combination / combinations to the students.

Special Note: If any student ignores above-mentioned instructions and tries to seek admission by giving fake statement/document, then he/she will himself/herself be responsible for cancellation of his/her admission and forfeiture of his fee/funds.

The professional courses of M.B.A.( Two Years) and M.C.A (Three Years) are running successfully. Most of the students have brought laurels to the institution while passing with distinction in examinations of various semesters.

Additional two seats are reserved for students of A.S.S.M. College in M.C.A. and M.B.A. subject to fulfillment of the following conditions.

NIS trained coach. He is the first person from Punjab, who is sent to Hungry to acquire new coaching techniques, by the government of India. Coaching will be provided totally free of cost. Whole training cost will be borne by Harbans Singh Purewal Sports and Education Academy.

Edusat• Education Satellite (Edusat) through Guru Nanak Dev University and Indian Space

Research Organization (ISRO) will be functional soon.• Students will have access to educational programmes and may interact with the

teacher conducting this programme from a distant station.

Cultural Activities

Amardeep Mela An annual mega feature of the college “Amardeep Mela” is celebrated on a large scale to

The College Management and faculty members incessantly strive to execute programmes that promote student welfare. Keeping in view this objective many co-curricular activities are encouraged.

N. C. C.The aim of N.C.C. is to impart military training to students with a view to inculcate

a sense of discipline, responsibility and spirit of comradeship. The practical training given to the cadets through Drill, Shooting, Map reading, First-aid training, fire fighting, Mountaineering, Para-shooting during camps, provides the requisite exposure which helps them to compete with added advantage in all fields of life.

• Our cadets take part in the Independence Day and Republic Day Parades.• The complete training is free of cost.

N. S. S.

NSS aims at fostering social consciousness of the youth. Its overall objective is to inculcate the spirit of social service, dignity of labor, community development, national integration and fellow feeling among the students. It has been active in our college since 1994. The college runs three units of N.S.S.-one for boys and two for girls.

Activities of N.S.S. include community service of 120 hours a year and special camp of ten days. Other Activities are- Adult Education, Pulse –Polio Programmes, First- Aid Training, Campus Beautification, Quiz, Painting and Essay Writing Competitions etc.

Activities of N.S.S in the session 2010-2011 include seven days NSS camp organized in village Shukar, One day NSS camp held on 20 September, 2010 to commemorate Death Anniversary of Bhai Kanaya Ji celebrated as 'Manav Sewa Sankalp Diwas' and Celebration of N. S. S. Day on 24 September, 2010 by holding a seminar elaborating the motto 'Not me but you'. Volunteers were inspired to donate blood. An awareness camp and rally on ‘Aids awareness and Drug de addiction’ was also organized.

A series of twelve lectures on various issues like Legal Services, Global Economy Employment Opportunities, Female feticide etc. was organized to make our students responsible and thinking citizens. This series was supported by life long learning department of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

Youth Club

The youth club remains active throughout the year. With a view to break the monotony of the class room teaching, the club organizes hiking and trekking expeditions besides holding debates and declamation contests. Youth club is involved in various other activities, inter college competitions and organizes extension lectures.

Seminars, Extension Lectures Acknowledging the fact that every institution pines to excel in academics, our college

also strives inadvertently to stretch its wings in educational erudition. Adhering to this perspective various seminars and extension lectures were organized.

Not only N. S. S. but other departments also conduct seminars and extension lectures, talks, workshops and exercises to widen the horizons of the learners. Some important issues and problems discussed are personality development, technique of data analysis, discriminant analysis and customer loyalty.

Career Guidance & Placement CellThe Career Guidance and Placement Cell of the college is directly associated with

Placement Department of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Career Guidance & Placement Cell organized a series of extension lectures. The aim of this series was to guide the students about their career prospective. Various learned dignitaries shared their views about the demands for young professionals in different sectors especially the expanding information technology and financial sector. In the session 2010-11, two students of Post Graduate Department of Computer Science and Information Technology got placed in the MNCs, TCS and Accenture.

Remedial & Coaching ClassesRemedial classes are organized for the benefit of the students who are slow learners

and fail to come up to the required standard in the house examinations. Special attention is given to the bright students for promoting their excellence in various subjects.

In the session 2010-2011 coaching classes for bank recruitment and NET/SLET entry into service scheme and remedial classes in various subjects were conducted under U. G. C. XI plan/scheme for S.C/ S.T/O.B.C/minority communities.

Go Green CampaignDepartment of Chemistry has launched a “Go Green Campaign” with a pledge to

make our campus clean and green. They also prepared models to spread message to the people to save their environment by using eco friendly articles in their daily life.

Red Ribbon Club & AchievementsRed Ribbon Club is very vibrantly working in the college in Collaboration with

Pushpa Gujral Science City,Kapurthala. The Club organizes poster making competitions, lectures and visits to make our students and residents of the area aware about the deadly disease AIDS. Teacher in charges of the Club compiled and translated a book titled “AIDS : causes and preventions” in Punjabi so that the awareness may spread up to common people. This book has been distributed to the students, college staff and to the local people free of cost.

Girls Grievances Cell A ‘Girls Grievances Cell’ operates to cope with problems of girl students. It ensures a safe and congenial atmosphere for the girl students in the college. Quick and suitable action is taken against any complaint from a student thus ensuring a congenial environment in the college without any fear of harassment.

Trips &Tours Educational Trips are arranged during the session. Such trips cultivate team spirit,

mutual adjustment and tolerance among the youth apart from being a medium for entertainment.

The college magazine “Amardeep” published annually. • Poems, stories and articles, written by the students, find place in the magazine. • Explores literary creativity of the students

Books publ ished• Our college published a book titled “AIDS its causes and preventions” in Punjabi so

that the awareness can be spread up to common people compiled and translated by Dr. sangeeta and Dr. Ashima.

• Another publication is a book entitled ‘Guru Har Rai Ji Jeevan Ate Asthan’ edited by Dr. Charanjit Kaur. The book portrays life, achievements and the contributions made to the society by the seventh Sikh guru, Shri Guru Har Rai Ji.

EXAMINATION PATTERNFollowing examinations will be held during current academic session. Date-sheets for the same will be displayed accordingly on the Students’ Notice Board.

a) House Examination - Novemberb) Special monthly class tests - as directed by the subject teachers/

Principal.• All the students have to be present in above-mentioned examinations/tests; otherwise

they will be penalized under rules.

Eligibil ity Criteria for Univers ity Examination• Every student has to be present in all house examinations and get at least 25% marks

in aggregate.• A student should have attended at least 75% lectures in every subject.• If a student does not fulfill the above criteria, he/she will be detained and roll number

will not be issued in any case.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

For maintaining the dignity, decorum and discipline of the institution followings points are to be kept in mind seriously.

Discipl ine Rules• Students must be punctual and regular in attending their classes.• Roaming about or standing in the corridors during classes is not allowed except when

change in class/period takes place. Movement from one classroom to another should be orderly.

• In vacant periods, students should go to the Library, Common Room, Gymnasium or Canteen. They must not indulge in loud talk or gossip as it disturbs adjoining classes.

• Writing and sticking bills on the walls of college is prohibited.• Students are not allowed to do any personal correspondence at the college address.• No outsider is permitted to meet the students without permission of Principal.• Mobiles are not permitted in the college premises.

• Candidature of any student found guilty of taking intoxicants/drugs in the college campus shall be cancelled immediately.

• Any damage to the college property will be severely penalized. Such students will not be allowed to continue their studies in the college.

• Students who bring their motorcycle with altered or damaged silencers and produce noise pollution will be fined Rs. 250.

• Students are directed to desist any kind of ragging.• Students are directed not to go to multipurpose hall and sit or stand on the open air

theatre. Any defaulters will be fined Rs. 500 and can be expelled from the college under special circumstances.

Strict disc ipl inary action wil l be taken against careless and indisc iplined students .

Change of Subject• A student can change subject/subjects within 15 days from commencement of classes

by filling prescribed Performa available from the office. • Lectures in the subject would be counted from the date the classes started and not

from the date of changing the subject. • A student cannot change subject without informing the office and without the consent

of concerned teachers.

Fee Rules • It will be the responsibility of the student to deposit the fees in time, irrespective of

the fact that it is notified on the Notice Board or not.• Late fee fine Rs. 20 per day will be charged if dues are not cleared in time.• Students seeking late admission will not have any concession in late fee.• Fees once deposited will not be refunded.• If a student leaves the college in the middle of the session he/she is required to inform

the authorities. Failing this he/she will have to deposit all dues along with fines in order to claim any certificate from the college.

• Half tuition fee will be charged from the junior most of two or more brothers/sisters studying in the institution.

• Students who leave the college can get the refund of their security by 30th November in the following session, subject to the condition that all their dues are cleared .If not claimed in time, security will stand lapsed. Students will have to produce original receipt of their fee of first year in the college at the time of security refund.

• As per Punjab Government scheme of “Post Matric scholarship for the students belonging to S.C and S. T for studying in India” some fees shall be reimbursed by the government. The relevant para is as under :“Scholars will be paid enrolment/ registration, tuition, games, union, library, magazine, medical examination and such other fees compulsorily payable by the scholar to the institution or university/board. Refundable deposit like caution money, security deposit will, however, be excluded.

Note: Compulsory non-refundable fee charged by recognized institutions against free and paid seats of recognized courses can be fully reimbursed as per the fee structure

approved by the competent state/central government authority . However, while sanctioning scholarship against paid seats , state government should make the income verification compulsory.”

Leave Rules • If a student is absent continuously for ten days from a class without sanction of leave,

his/her name may be struck off. Re-admission may be allowed only on the request of parents.

• Leave should be applied for personally by the student on the prescribed form available in the office.

• A fine of Re.1/- per lecture will be charged for absence from the class.• Leave sanctioned by the teacher means only remittance of fine. No relaxation in

lectures will be given.• In case of serious illness the leave application must be submitted as soon as possible

along with medical certificate. Even then there can be no relaxation in the university condition of minimum lectures.

Transport Rules• Routes of Buses can be changed from time to time.• Second route students will not be permitted to go back by first route.

Examination Rules• A student may not be permitted to appear in House Exams/University Exams if

he/she fails to deposit fee in time.• Absent students in house examination will be penalized Rs.100/- per subject/paper

subject to maximum of Rs. 300.

Library & Identity Card Rules• Library remains open throughout the session except on Sundays and other holidays.• Student should deposit their personal belongings at the entrance before getting into

the library.• Students will not take cuttings from library books, newspapers or magazines.• Books will be issued for days mentioned in due date slip or for 14 days. Fine of Rs. 1

per day will be charged for overdue books.• A student, who loses, defaces or otherwise damages any book shall have to pay the

full cost of the book as per prevailing rates. Books should be carefully checked before getting issued.

• Number of books which can be borrowed at a time from library is : Undergraduate classes Three books Post Graduate classes Six books• Library tickets should not be lent/borrowed/misplaced and are to be submitted in the

library at the end of session for clearance of account. If the tickets are lost the student will be responsible for the misuse of the tickets and will have to pay for the books if those are issued on the lost tickets.

• Loss of ticket should be reported to the Librarian. A fine of Rs.10 per ticket will be charged for the loss of ticket.

• Perfect order and silence are expected in the library and reading hall.• Each student will be issued an identity card at the commencement of the session.

The students are required to be in possession of their identity cards while in College and produce the same if asked for.

• The loss of identity card should be reported immediately and a police FIR is to be done in that case.

• Fine of Rs.50/- will be charged in case of loss of Identity Card. It is the responsibility of the student to get duplicate card issued immediately.

• Reference books and magazines will not be issued to the students.• At the end of the academic year every student must obtain a “No Due Certificate”

from the librarian to enable him / her to sit in the examination and claim back the library security

Textbooks are given free of charge for full academic session to the poor & deserving students from Book-Bank.

Special Instructions Any change in address should be intimated to the office.• The instructions on the notice board should be read daily.• Students must listen carefully to the instructions given during assembly and follow

them earnestly.• No student is allowed to change his/her address to village Mukandpur. The college

shall correspond at the original address filled in admission form.

Points to be noted by the Parents/Guardians • Contact college immediately whenever informed about any problem.• Make sure that your ward takes all the house examinations/class tests.• It is most essential that your ward secures the minimum marks in house examination

and has attended minimum required lectures in all subjects to enable him/her to take University Examinations. Failing this roll number will not be issued.

• Check the report card personally.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

With a view to help the economically weak and meritorious students, the college offers many scholarships, free ships and prizes. They include Academic, Sports and Cultural scholarships. Fee concessions are also given to deserving students. Here is a provision of free education for physically challenged students. The financial assistance shall be provided to deserving and eligible students as per College/University/Government rules; the same shall be displayed on the notice board of the college. Those who wish to avail this facility shall have to apply in time as per notice displayed.
