Christ-centred •Hope-filled •Mission-orientated

Page 3: Prospectus assessment r3

Thank you for finding out more about EmmanuelTheological College. We believe that God has called usto equip the whole people of God for the whole mission

of God in our region by offering outstanding formationaltraining for lay and ordained leaders both full-time and part-time. Through the combination of worship, study, andpractice, women and men from across the breadth of theChurch’s traditions and from a wide range of ethnic, cultural,socio-economic, and educational backgrounds are formed in Christ’s image to be gospel-people, encouraging anddeveloping the same in those they lead.

We know it’s a big vision and a huge task, and not somethingwe do in our own strength. We rely on the Holy Spirit to keep usfaithfully Christ-centred, hope-filled, and mission-orientated.

Being Christ-centred means worship is a priority for us.Indeed, worshiping Jesus forms us as community of disciples.Emmanuel’s culture celebrates the best of the Christiantradition in all its forms, growing in us a generosity towardother followers of Jesus whose worshipping styles or practicesare different from our own. It’s sometimes a challenge, but it isalso a gift through which we experience what Christ is doingthrough word and sacrament across the Church in our region.

Being Hope-filled means we are confident in God’s love, declared in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. It is theethos of our community. We’re honest about our own fragilityand brokenness and that of the world we live in but, becauseJesus lives with death behind him, we believe those thingsdon’t have the final word on anything. We’re always steppingtowards the challenges of being Church today, wrestling withthe most difficult questions of life, and striving forChristlikeness in our relationships, rigour in our theology, and depth in our formation.

Being Mission-orientated means we are compelled towardsthe world God loves and for which Christ died, thinkingcreatively and practically about ways Jesus and his Churchmake a difference to our villages, towns, and cities. Missionshapes our imagination. We imitate and celebrate the best oftime-honoured church while actively developing our studentsas pioneers and church planters in their own contexts, to buildlife-enhancing gospel-connections with as many people as wecan in Christ’s name.

At Emmanuel we are passionate about this task, and we loveto work with people who are passionate about Jesus, theworld he loves, and the Church he is calling into action today. If that sounds good to you, then I hope what you read herewhets your appetite to come and study with us. You can findout more information on our website or feel free to get intouch with our admissions team (details are at the end of this prospectus).

As you read this, please know that we’re praying for you as you discern what God is asking of you, and whetherEmmanuel is part of the next season of your walk with him.And that whatever happens next, you will know in the depthsof your being something of how much he loves you.

Welcome

...a big vision and a huge task,

and not something we do in our

own strength.

We take Jesus seriously when he says we should love Godwith our minds (Matt. 22:37), and we’re rigorous abouttheology for the Church’s good health and vitality.

But, we remember also that Jesus commands us to love Godwith our heart and soul and strength. Scholarly study aloneisn’t enough, and our curriculum ethos tries to reflect that.

The curriculum for both our full-time and part-time studentsis shaped around three strands woven together into eachstudent’s “training pathway”:

(i) a Ministerial Formation Programme, tailored towards thedifferent kinds of ministry for which students are beingprepared, and delivered by local practitioners alongsideCollege staff. The programme focuses on prayer andspirituality, leadership and pastoral studies, and ministryskills.

(ii) a Contextual Placement that lasts for the duration of astudent’s training, and in which a student works with anexperienced supervisor in a local church to develop practicalskills and root their studies in the reality of ministry today.Placements are integrated into the curriculum, andsupervisors receive training and support from the College.

(iii) an Academic Programme, which will be validated by theUniversity of Durham Common Awards and includeundergraduate or post-graduate qualifications depending onstudents’ prior study and experience. This programme helpsour students to develop theological knowledge andunderstanding, as well as to sharpen the critical thinking andreflective skills that are necessary for fruitful ministry.

Emmanuel'scurriculum takes seriouslythe exciting task of forming womenand men in the image of Christ.

We know it cannot be done throughstudy alone. It requires opportunitiesfor spiritual growth and characterdevelopment, alongside practicalexperiences that will sharpentheological wits and grow leaders.

I am delighted that our curriculumdeliberately combines the threestrands of ministry formation, contextual placement, and academictheology to equip people for lively androbust mission-shaped ministry in thetwenty-first century.

Rt Rev’d Dr Emma Ineson, Bishop of Penrith

“Formation” is a word you will hear a lot at Emmanuel. It describes the rich and multi-layered process of growth and development that our students experience amidst theinterplay of theological study, contextual practice, andministerial training.

Sometimes our experience of formation is challenging, highlighting areas of further growth and development whichwe must wrestle with as we respond to God’s call. It mightmean coming face to face with things we’ve avoided in life orhaven’t considered for a long time. Oftentimes our experienceof formation is inviting, giving us a glimpse of who we reallyare in Christ and who we are becoming as we follow after him.Whatever our experience at any given time, formationalmoments cause us to reflect on the people we are becomingboth in terms of our vocation to ministry but also theChristlikeness of our character and its impact on our lives, especially in the quality and depth of our relationships.

As we see it in scripture, formation is ultimately the work ofthe Holy Spirit who constantly draws us to Christ. Those whocame face to face with Jesus did not remain the same. Indeed,trans-formation is part of God’s ongoing work of redemptionand renewal in each of us.

Our ministerial formation programme thus combines aspectsof both personal formation and ministry development.Prayer, spirituality, priestly and lay leadership, pastoralstudies, and ministry skills will be explored in a generous way, bringing students face to face with existing practitionersacross our region, and inviting them to find ways of reflectingon their own practices in the light of the teaching they willreceive.

Good formationtouches and transformsthe whole person. It enrichesspirituality, grows character anddevelops the intellect. That is our goalat Emmanuel. We expect our studentsto live lives rooted in rich patterns ofprayer. Without that, ministry isfruitless and pointless.

Our passion is to produce studentswho have the interior resources tosustain outward looking Christianministry in incredibly testing times.

Rt Rev’d Philip North, Bishop of Burnley
