HIGH SCHOOL –Year 7/8 transition

Many of our parents have taken advantage of the open nights that are occurring in many of our feeder High Schools to receive up-to-date information about their child’s transition to High School.

Please note that Adelaide Botanic High School have a single shared zone with Adelaide High School, allowing parents within the zone to nominate their preferred city high school. Where demand from families living in the shared area exceeds places available all applications will be ranked and if necessary students may be shared between the two schools.

As with our school you will need to provide supporting documentation that your child resides at the residential address nominated on the Registration of Interest for Placement in Year 8 form (ED176). It is important that the address we have on our system (EDSAS) now is correct. Please inform the front office if you have changed your address recently.

Please understand that I cannot write letters to support entry into either Botanical or Adelaide High School if you live outside the zone. You will need to follow the process that is clearly stated on both High Schools websites or seek further advice by emailing [email protected] or [email protected]

Important timelines

After week 10 Term 1 Year 7 Parents/caregivers to receive transition packs -MUST fill out ED176 form

By week 4 Term 2 22-26 May Year 7 Students to return ED 176 form

By week 4 Term 3 Year 7s to receive acceptance packs including Review Information for parents.

THANK YOU GOVERNING COUNCIL

I sincerely thank our Governing Council members who worked tirelessly on Election Day cooking and selling democracy sausages and drinks to voters. We raised $1,061.84 for our playground area near the Child Care Centre.

Children’s University News Each participating student now has their passport. Students are asked

to carry their passports with them to Children’s University activities. When students complete an activity, they will receive a stamp in their

passport to record their participation.

Now it is time to explore the Children’s University Learning Destinations, these are locations outside of the school which children

can attend to receive a stamp on their passport. There are over 200 Learning Destinations throughout the state and destinations can be

found at www.childrensuniversity.com.au.

Remember, if your child is already participating in regular activities outside of school (e.g. sports, music, performing arts, Scouts etc.) they

can receive up to 10 hours for these activities. Students collect a Student Review Form from me to complete. Students have the year

to complete these forms. Once complete, students return these forms to me with their passport; I will enter the hours in the passport and

stamp it.

Children’s University is now on Social Media which can keep parents/caregivers updated about Learning Destination activities.

Amity from Room 9, went to a FREE DYI workshop at Bunnings on the weekend to learn new skills and to gain hours for her passport.

If you have any questions about the Children’s University program

please contact me at school.

CYBER SAFETY- ADVICE FROM AN EXPERT

SUSAN MCLEAN

Reflections and sharing from Leah Richards: EALD and Well-being teacher

We are continually reminded and made aware of protecting our children when using social media and accessing the internet. I recently attended a conference where Susan McLean, one of Australia’s leading cyber-safety experts and educators spoke. Her presentation was powerful and made me take stock of a number of things. In particular, I would like to pass on her warnings re some apps well known to police and currently of particular concern (some seemingly innocent) and some recommendations.

Firstly, Susan maintains most adults and parents are not aware of the risks in social media usage or what their children are doing with it. An example she shared is that we are not aware of seemingly innocent images taken and shared, but then re-shared often without the original photo subject or their families being aware.

In schools, photos and filming taken at events including assemblies, sports days and excursions will often be shared on platforms such as Facebook- then open to ever growing audiences. The person posting can have personal settings, but do not control the settings of “friends” accounts. We as parents are often not aware of the ramifications of our actions. Eg there may be court orders in place involving one of the children visible in these images. Images identifying students in uniform can be shared with ever-growing audiences. She advised not to let students take photos of friends at school and that parents should not be taking photos, filming at school events other than their child.

Another point she made is that parents need to be best parents, not best friends. Children may not like being questioned about their usage, have passwords shared with parents or to have their online use checked, and have phones removed at night etc., but this is for their protection. They may not like age restrictions being adhered to, refusal for them to have social media accounts before the legal age, have gaming restrictions etc., but it keeps them safe. It is not about trust, but protocols that protect. Age limits are put in place for a reason. Sadly, parents often set up accounts for their children who are pre the age limits set, not being aware of some of the potential consequences.

She also warned about of people being educated and aware of their digital footprint. There is no such thing as anonymous identities and things being deleted. Once posted, it is there. It is all accessible if it need be. You cannot delete anything. For example, police can request get records of complete transcripts of all messages,dates/time etc. since Facebook accounts have been established. Records of all phone numbers called on phones etc. So called anonymous accounts are not actually anonymous. In reality, you can’t hide your identity.( Eg “Saraha”- an app apparently allowing for anonymous messages. )

In terms of sharing passwords, her comment was to tell children- do not share even with friends. If you don’t share a toothbrush then don’t share your footprint.

Susan spoke also of cyber –bullying being repeated events- not a stand-alone event. Also that the power of online bullying is huge: videos do not just get shares, but get viewed, liked and passed on. There is not the same inhibition if such a thing were face to face.

Concerns highlighted by SUSAN MCLEAN:

Number 1 concern of young people with social media is social exclusion, 2nd

nasty messages followed by threats as 3rd

.

Sexting is an old people’s word. There are all sorts of acronyms used in texts we do not understand. Susan has a list of some on her website. (See reference at the end.) It is an offence. It is criminal. Everyone needs to be aware of this and the law including our young people and teens.

Other Apps of concern:

“Snap Chat” is a concern: it is stored, kept and saved. She recommends to learn to save images in case needed.

NQ vault, Secret calculator, Private photo vault, Hide it pro Kiik 17+ instant messaging app.

Omegle: where people go to find strangers.

Instragram 13+: Having a private account is only a safety feature if you know who is following you.

Musically 13+ : Needs parent permission- many children have public accounts and can be viewed, contacted by strangers anywhere and everywhere. This app is known to police and of concern. If private- again they must personally know the person or it is not safe.

Yub 13+ : an app where you swipe images of people- right to like, left to pass. Connects people to random strangers. Known as tinder for teens.

Computers should only be used in public places in the home and NOT THE BEDROOM. Phones should NOT BE IN BEDROOMS at night. Account age recommendations should be followed.

Spotafriend.13+ GPS connects with people close. Can also see profile of person you just crossed paths with.

Meet Me- a chat and meet me app.

Sarahah: A new social networking site. Originally developed as an anonymous app to give feedback.

Melon: meet new people.

Susan recommended that if you want to keep in touch with what is around, search the current Top 10 favourite apps.

Things of use to families and highly recommended by Susan McLean:

“Out of bounds”: An educational app explaining the laws surrounding Age of Consent, Sexting and Cyber Bullying. The app contains easy to understand summaries of the law, case studies, quizzes, comics and other interactive features to help users – especially teenagers – understand the laws and consequences

“Send this instead”: an app to choose responses when receiving inappropriate texts so that children know a way to be able to respond powerfully.

www.esafety.gov.au A great resource. How to report cyber bullying etc.

www.cybersafetysolutions.com.au Susan’s website.

We plan to hold another cyber safety parent workshop in term 2.

On Thursday 22nd March some of our enthusiastic students attended the Australasian Social Business Forum hosted by the STEMSEL Foundation, Grameen Australia at Pembroke School. This forum explored Dr Yunus’ world of three zeroes: The New Economics of Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, Zero Net Carbon Emissions. The Australasian Social Business Forum explored how we can put into action Dr Yunus’ rules of the three zeros from across the social sector, business world, academia and government.

Kosta, Max, Areti and Angelos with Dr Yunus.
