Jack lived with his mother. They were poor and owned only a cow. One day, the mother said to Jack, “We have no more food. Please go to the market and sell the cow.

On the way to the market, Jack met a stranger. “I want to buy that cow,” said the stranger. “I will give you five magic beans for your cow,” the stranger offered. Jack was not

very clever. He sold the cow for the beans!
When Jack returned home, his mother was very angry. She said, “You fool! What have you done? We needed the money to buy a calf. Now we don’t have anything and we

are even poorer.” Jack felt guilty and sad. “Only a fool would exchange a cow for five beans,” his mother fumed.
She threw the beans out the window

and sent Jack to bed with no dinner.
That night, the beans grew into a

R e a d i n g P a g e | 43
The next day, Jack climbed the beanstalk into the sky. Once he reached the top of the stalk he found himself over the clouds. He saw a huge castle. “I wonder who lives there,” he thought. Jack was very surprised to see a path leading to the castle.
Dr. Butsakorn Yodkamlue, SUT

Jack went inside the castle and heard an extreme loud noise. The giant was home. When the giant saw Jack he said, I’m going to eat you.” Jack said, let me cook you a big meal. It will be more delicious than me.” The giant agreed. Jack cooked all day and night. The giant ate his meal and fell asleep.

The giant owned a hen that laid golden eggs. Jack quickly grabbed the hen, ran out of the castle, and climbed down the beanstalk.
