Brief History

Current Degrees:► BS in Computer Science, CS► BS in Computer and Information Engineering, CIE

ABET Accreditation:► CS is accredited by:

- the ABET Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC)► CIE is accredited by:

- the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC)

Majors:► 60 CIE students► 177 CS students

Issues with Current State

Student issues:► Students have to choose CS or CIE► Ambiguity in CIE definition makes it difficult to choose

Employer issues:► Difficulty distinguishing CS and CIE► Prefer well-rounded graduates having strong foundations both in the science and engineering of computing

Departmental issues:► Two separate BS degrees drain resources► Unbalanced enrollment► Not well aligned with research strengths

► Better scheduling of courses - higher availability

► Consistent, broad background for all students

► World class depth in specialization areas leveraging research strengths

► Graduates better prepared for wider range of career paths and for graduate school

► Stronger, more marketable degree

► Many other institutions have similar programs:- MIT, OSU, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, University of Connecticut, Georgia Tech, ...
