SIAN LAW STUDENTS' ASSOCIATIONTERNATIONAL BOARDLSA INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR 2011

Development and growth of the ASEAN countries have increased through the past decade thatstrengthens even stronger cooperation among them. Such cooperation in the ASEAN region has grown infrequency and not just limited to political affairs among each government, but also extended to the fieldsof other social concerns, such as law and human rights, economy, education, culture, and even nationalsecurity. Being inspired by this condition, on 18th May 1989, a group of Indonesian Law Students camewith the idea of forming an organization where they could foster better relations, as well as promoteunderstanding and appreciation of different legal systems of ASEAN member countries, along withbuilding friendship among other law students throughout ASEAN borders. The idea came to a realizationby the establishment of ASEAN Law Students' Association (ALSA)in the very same year, with the membersof Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. The same associating spirit, in fact, was alsofelt by law students in the other part of Asia, which are the law students from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Thus, in the year of 1996, these young law students formed an organization under the name of Asian LawStudents' Association (ALSA).Globalization era, International trade and the rapid improvement of information technology as the meanof even a wider cooperation among Asian countries have motivated both associations, ASEANS lawStudents'network to the scope of the region of Asian countries. Therefore, by an agreement that wassigned on 7th September 2002 in the Forum that was held by the Asian law Students' Association (Japan,Korea, Taiwan) was performed into one single association. As a result, it was agreed that such TokyoAgreement have birth to a new international law students association representing all law studentsaround Asia, under the name of the ASIAN LAW STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION(ALSA). Such agreement wastaken into force by the Bangkok Agreement that was signed in the ALSAConference, Bangkok, Thailand on23rd October 2003 - along with the enrollment of China and Hong Kong as the members. Later, after the2009 Forum \ conducted in the Philippines, Banglades had joined ASIAN LAW STUDENT ASSOCIATION(ALSA)as its member. Additionally, the ALSAForum 2010 in Korea, it is very honor that Brunei become oneits newest member. Thus, until this current time, ALSA has the following official members:Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Hongkong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailandand Taiwan. Up to the current time ALSA is embarking a programmatic approach in extending itsmembership to other Asian countries to ensure on the existence of a broad perspective in the very spiritof ALSA.

SIAN LAW STUDENTS' ASSOCIATIONTERNATIONAL BOARDLSA INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR 2011

    Bandung, West Java, Indonesia31 May - 6 June 2011

"Prepering fo r a New Age of D iplomacy, D isp uteResolution, and C lients Relationship"Inspired bythe current affairs in international relations and lawwhich are currently faced byvariouschallenges, it creates a question on how are the ways of countries in fostering cooperations inpublic related matters or cooperation that involves economical interests of the countries. Thediplomacy also includes the way for countries resolving disputes, such for disputes that directlyaffect the country or that affect the world society. Understanding the needs of equipping futureleaders with such knowledge the expert of the matters will elucidate the current trends ofdiplomacy.

Adding the skills of handling clients and aswell asfor understanding the breakthrough in the worldof dispute resolution, especially the alternative ones. Arbitration has been able take the lead inalternative dispute resolution, and the current law students who are interested in the field ofarbitration required to understand the methods of arbitration much further. This shall include theway for counselsto relate to their clients which play important role in mastering and practicing thetheories of dispute resolution.Overall, it is important for the law students to equip themselves with skills to facea problem whichisnot a problem today. The three topics in the theme, together will allow them to equip such skillsand to broaden their mind to find bigger opportunities for carrer and to further understand theirstudy of law. Sameopportunities are offered aswell to the professionals to empower the futureleaders and to share great experiences to beshared.
