Matter Is anything that takes up space. The three states of matter are: solid,

liquid, gas.

MassThe amount of matter in an

object.

VolumeThe amount of space matter

takes up.

AtomThe small particles that make up

matter.

A solid is hard because it’s particles do not move very much.

The particles in a liquid are more loose than in a solid. This lets them slide past each other.

The particles in a gas are not connected to each other and are not close. They move in straight lines until something stops it, then it bounces off in another direction.

SolidMatter that does not change in

shape and volume.

LiquidMatter that can change in shape

but not in volume.

EvaporationThe process in which a liquid

becomes a gas. (think about the water cycle)

Physical PropertyAnything you can observe about

an object using your senses.

You can not observe the temperature of an object by looking at it.

Putting a small, light object, like a straw, into a cup of water, will not cause much of a change.

Is salt a solid or a liquid??? Salt is a solid, even though it will take the

shape of the container it is poured into. Each individual grain of salt has a shape

and a volume.

What happens when you put water in the freezer??

Taking away heat will cause the water to freeze.

Which had more mass? A bowling ball or a basketball?

The basketball is bigger but the bowling ball had more mass because it is heavier.
