    Collect of the Day:

Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because itcannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by yourgoodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the HolySpirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    First Reading: Nehemiah 9:16-20All sit.

In a prayer, the priest Ezra tells of Gods love and faithfulness for his people, even whenthey are faithless and turn away from him.A reading from the Book of the Prophet Nehemiah:

Ezra blessed the Lord and said, But they and our fathers acted presumptuously andstiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments. They refused to obey andwere not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened theirneck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God readyto forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and didnot forsake them. Even when they had made for themselves a golden calf and said, This isyour God who brought you up out of Egypt, and had committed great blasphemies, you inyour great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud to lead themin the way did not depart from them by day, nor the pillar of re by night to light for themthe way by which they should go. You gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did notwithhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God.

The Psalm of the day:Remain seated

    Psalm 78:14-20, 23-25

14 He led them with a cloud by day, *and all the night through with a glow of re.

15 He split the hard rocks in the wilderness *and gave them drink as from the great deep.

16 He brought streams out of the cliff, *and the waters gushed out like rivers.

17 But they went on sinning against him, *rebelling in the desert against the Most High.

18 They tested God in their hearts, *demanding food for their craving.

19 They railed against God and said, *Can God set a table in the wilderness?

    6/16

20 True, he struck the rock, the waters gushed out, and thegullies overowed; *

but is he able to give breador to provide meat for his people?

23 So he commanded the clouds above *and opened the doors of heaven.

24 He rained down manna upon them to eat *and gave them grain from heaven.

25 So mortals ate the bread of angels; *he provided for them food enough.

    Second Reading: Romans 8:35-39

Paul declares with condence that nothing can separate us from Gods love if we trust inGod as revealed in Jesus Christ.

A Reading from Pauls letter to the Church in Rome.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution,or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,

For your sake we are being killed all the day long;we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I amsure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things tocome, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able toseparate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Now when Jesus heard that John the Baptist was dead, he withdrew from there in a boatto a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on footfrom the towns. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassionon them and healed their sick. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him andsaid, This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go intothe villages and buy food for themselves. But Jesus said, They need not go away; yougive them something to eat. They said to him, We have only ve loaves here and twosh. And he said, Bring them here to me. Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on

the grass, and taking the ve loaves and the two sh, he looked up to heaven and said ablessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gavethem to the crowds. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or stand at this time, as best helps you to pray.

Holy and gracious Father: In your innite love you made us for yourself; and, when wehad fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent JesusChrist, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of

us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, aperfect sacrice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ tookbread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, andsaid, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance ofme.

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shedfor you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for theremembrance of me.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrice of praise andthanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we mayfaithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; andat the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in theunity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

    AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

    A Note on Todays Readings

    Proper 13, Year A

Welcome to St. Francis Church. Church. Throughout the Bible God uses food as a primarymeans of calling the people together and of revealing the divine presence to them. Todaywe have Matthews account of the feeding of the 5,000. For early Christians this accountsimportance lay not so much in the miraculous multiplying of the loaves and shes as inits resemblance to the Eucharist, their own wayand oursof experiencing Jesuscontinuing presence in their midst.

In the rst reading, the Jewish leader Ezra remembers Gods unswerving love forIsrael. Even though the people in the exodus rebelled against God, God continued tocare for them, to lead them, and to feed them.

The second reading today brings us to a point in Pauls letter to Rome in which hisextended discourse on grace and faith leads him into an outburst of praise which is oneof the most stirring expressions of faith in the scriptures.

Religious meals are one of the universal expressions of human religion. All the insightsof Gods long love affair with humanity are summed up in these meals. Given deeperand fuller meaning by the Passover of Israel and nally used by Jesus to interpret themeaning of his death and resurrection, the Eucharist becomes for us the fullest andmost complete revelation of Gods love and of his salvation.
