What do teenagers in the UK like to do?

Teenagers in England do the same things as kids in America or other European countries. They love chatting to their friends and texting them on their mobiles, hanging out with them, listening to the latest music together, playing video games, shopping for the latest fashions or just watching films on TV or at the cinema. Some of them play sports, learn to play musical instruments or have fun making things.

Robin Hayes is 18 and he lives in Leeds, England. He loves making models and is getting really good at it. Last year he won a competition at his local secondary school for making the best model. He made an amazing medieval castle and a dragon to go with it. He also makes temples, trees, caves, lakes, huts, palisades and bunkers so he can play with his Warhammer figures.

He recycled lots of materials to make this model: bits of polystyrene, toilet rolls, cereal boxes, clay, sand, glue, wire, string and paint. When he is making a castle, he doesn’t have a strict plan before he starts, although he has a vague idea, he just lets the model evolve.

For the base of this castle he used a wooden board and then a piece of polystyrene, because is light and easy to shape. He used a knife to give it the irregular form and appearance of rocks. Then he built walls and towers with the boxes and pieces of cardboard.

Once he was happy with the castle structure, he glued it on to the base and covered the towers and walls with white clay. Before he attached the clay to the walls; he pushed the clay into a mold so it took on the texture of stones. Then very gently he glued the clay onto the structure and let it dry before adding roofs to the towers.

Then he included other details like windows, doors and bridges, which he made from little pieces of wood or cardboard. Finally he put glue on the base and covered it with sand to give it a realistic texture and painted the whole model using fantastic colours. Final touches like a bridge and molten lava gave the whole model a rich air of fantasy.
