System Integration
Personal ComputerTransmitters equipped with a RackbusRS-485 interface can be connected to apersonal computer via the RackbusRS-485 bus. A measuring system thencomprises:
• Several Prolevel measuring points(or other units with Rackbus RS-485interface)
• PC connection (RS-485 interface cardor a RS-232C/RS-485 converter).
Depending on the system topology, upto 25 transmitters can be connected atvarious points on the bus, which may beup to 1200 m long.
Process Control SystemsThe Prolevel FMC can be easily andeconomically integrated into existingindustrial process control systems.Individual Rackbus RS-485 buses, each with up to 25 transmitters, are connected to the Rackbus via theFXA 675 interface card (exceptionallyvia Monorack RS-485). A gatewayconnects the Rackbus to standardsupervisory systems such asPROFIBUS, FIP or MODBUS.

Operating Principle Capacitive MeasurementThe probe and vessel wall (or counterelectrode) form a capacitor with adefined capacitance which is low whenthe probe is in air. As soon as materialcovers the probe, a larger capacitanceis formed between the probe and thevessel wall while the resistance betweenthe probe and vessel wall becomessmaller. The parallel circuit of capacitorand resistor - i.e. the impedance - ismeasure.
Signal ProcessingThe Prolevel provides the sensors withpower over an unscreened two-wirecable. Every sensor supplies aninterference-free, level proportional, pulse frequency modulated (PFM) signalvia the same cable. The measured valuederived from this signal is displayed atthe transmitter and output as a standard0/4…20 mA signal. It may also be readby a Commulog VU 260 Z handheldterminal or passed on to a supervisorysystem via the optional Rackbus RS-485interface.
Function MonitoringThe Prolevel transmitter monitors thecomplete measuring system from thesensor to the outputs. On fault condition:
• the alarm relay de-energises and thecorresponding LED lights
• the current falls to –10%, rises to+110% or holds the last value(programmable)
• the limit relays respond according tothe fail-safe mode selected orde-energise (programmable).
Simple LinearisationA linearisation is made by entering avessel characteristic which describesthe relationship between the height hand volume V of the vessel.
The most common application- a horizontal cylinder - is pre-programmed in the transmitter.A linearisation table for any other vesselshape, e.g., a tank with a conical outlet, can be simply programmed by enteringup to 30 reference points.
Level Measurement withReference ProbeThe level and reference probe aremounted as shown in the diagram on theright. During measurement, thereference probe should always be fullycovered. Any change in the signal of thesensor detected by the Prolevel doesnot, therefore, indicate a change in levelbut instead a change in the electricalproperties of the product.

Hazardous AreasWhen laying cables in hazardous areas, the maximum permissible values for U, I,R, L, C (see Certificate of Conformity)and all local regulations are to beobserved.
Electrical IsolationCurrent output, relay outputs, powersupply, sensor input and bus inputs areelectrically isolated from each other(safe isolation to DIN/VDE 0160).Both sensor inputs are intrinsically safeand electrically isolated from each other.
Overvoltage ProtectionThe external overvoltage protection unitHAW 262 for signal outputs isrecommended for protecting thetransmitter from voltage peaks, especially when it is mounted in thefield. The overvoltage protection unitHAW 261 should be used to protectagainst mains power voltage peaks.
Electromagnetic CompatibilityThe interference immunity of the Prolevelhas been checked to a test strength of10 V/m. The signal deviation over thetotal frequency range of 10 kHz to1 GHz is always less than 1 %. Overwide frequency ranges the deviation issignificantly lower.
Bus Installation Rackbus RS-485Normally, up to 25 Prolevel transmitterscan be connected to the bus: the actualnumber depends upon the topology andconditions of operation. The bus connection requires:
Bus AddressEvery transmitter is given a uniqueaddress which is configured at the DIPswitches at the terminal strip.
TerminationFor reliable transmission of thecommunication signal:
• set the terminal resistance at the PCboard and the furthest Prolevel fromthe board to 150 Ω.
The bus power is provided by the PCinterface card or RS-232C/RS-485adapter.

Operation Simple OperationThe six keys on the front panel are usedto configure the instrument or call upmeasured values: parameters aredisplayed on the 4-digit LC-display.
The transmitter is configured via anoperating matrix, whereby each field isselected by the (vertical) and(horizontal) keys. Parameters areentered using only three keys , ,
: pressing the key stores andregisters the entered value.
Operating MatrixWhether the Prolevel is configured viathe keypad, with the handheld terminalor remotely via the Rackbus RS-485interface, the easy-to-use operatingmatrix ensures programming proceduresare uniform and clear. An in-depthknowledge of Endress+Hauserinstrumentation is not needed to quicklyconfigure the transmitter.
Handheld TerminalAll Prolevel transmitters can be operatedby the Commulog VU 260 Z handheldterminal, which displays parameters, measured values and operating status. Its large display gives simple,self-explanatory information on allparameters in the language selectedwhen ordering. The transmittercontinues to measure normally whiledata are entered or read.

• Summary of connected and operativetransmitters - the so-called live list
• Selection of the Prolevel transmitters• Configuration and calibration of the
transmitters via the operating matrix• Presentation of measured values as
moving columns• Back-up of configurations by the
