The 2009 season was marked by scandals, political battles and the appearance of Brawn,

No

Those who thought they woul -
dn’t be surprised anymore after
the 2008 season’s electrifying final
were wrong. In and out of the race
tracks, there was no shortage of emo-
tions in the 2009 championship, which
is still open, although it can see its fi-
nal act here in Interlagos.
Shortly after the end of the 2008
season, won by McLaren’s Lewis Ha -
milton by a one-point advantage over
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa thanks to an
overtake made on the last lap of the
last race, the Honda team announced
that they wouldn’t be on the track in
2009. With the global economic crisis,
the possibility of so meone bu y ing
Honda’s assets seemed to be small.
However, in Fe bru ary Ross Brawn,
Honda’s last team chief, bou ght out
what was left of the team and got
Mercedes to provide the engines to his
cars. Renamed as Brawn GP, the team
kept its two drivers. For Bar richello, it
was the beginning of an impressive
resurrection, as he was presumed re-
tired. For Button, it was the beginning
of a path that can lead him to his first
Formula One world title.
The team’s surprising results in
the last collective test prior to the sea-
son were confirmed in the first Grand
Prix of the year. In Melbourne, Aus tra -
lia, the Brawn cars made history. Jen -
son Button started from the pole and
won after leading the race back to
back – the team’s first race. Barrichello
finished second.
The first Grand Prix was also the
stage of the year’s first scandal in F1.
Jarno Trulli, of Toyota, who had fin-
ished third, received a penalty for over-
taking Lewis Hamilton with the safety
car on the track. However, after analyz-
ing the talks between the champion
and his team, the race officials discov-
ered that McLaren had instructed him
to let Trulli go. As the English driver had
omitted this order, he ended up dis-
qualified, and the Italian received his
points back.
via instruído a deixar Trulli passar.
seiro.
Malásia, as emoções caíram do céu. Literalmente.
sários paralisaram a corrida. Minutos depois, a prova foi
encerrada, pois começava a escurecer.

No deserto, a Toyota conseguiu emplacar Jarno
Trulli e Timo Glock na primeira e na segunda posições
do grid. O líder do campeonato, Jenson Button, largou
ori gem, a Europa.
Button e Bar -
richello foram os primeiros, acompanhados de Vettel.
FIA X FotaFora das pistas, a Federação Internacional de Au to mo -
bilis mo (FIA) apresentou as mudanças no regulamento
Melbourne also saw the begin-
ning of the protest from the big teams
against a component of Brawn, Toyota
and Williams cars: the back diffuser.
The final decision, which definitively
ap prov ed the part, didn’t come until al-
most a month afterwards.
Under water
On the season’s second race, in Se -
pang, Malaysia, emotions came from
above. Literally. On the 22nd lap, a del-
uge stormed over the track, causing a
confusion of pit stops and tire changes.
There was so much rain that, ten laps
later, the officials interrupted the race.
Minutes afterwards, the race was offi-
cially over, as the night began to fall.
We explain: the race had begun in the
Malaysian late afternoon in order to be
broad casted to Europe in a more
agree able hour. At the end, one more
victory for Button, followed by BMW’s
Nick Heidfeld and Toyota’s Timo Glock.
The third race, in China, also went
on under rain. This time, however, it
was another small team that dominat-
ed the race. Red Bull made the pole
position with Vet tel and took home a
double victory, with Vettel in first place
and Webber in second. Another high-
light, this time a ne gative one, was the
then very po wer ful Ferrari, which com-
pleted three races without any points,
making its worst championship start
since 1981.
The Bahrein Grand Prix, the fourth
race of the season, highlighted anoth-
er team that in the previous year was
also nothing but a secondary one. In
the desert, Toyota was able to get
Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock on the first
two positions of the starting grid.
Jenson Button, the series leader, start-
ed in fourth, but in the first round of pit
stops he took over the lead and never
let it go. Vettel finished second.
On May 10, Formula One returned
to Europe, its original territory. Many
thought it would be the beginning of
the recovery of Ferrari and McLaren.
The race in Spain, however, showed
that things wouldn’t be so predictable.
The Brawn cars dominated the Barce -
lona track, much ahead of the “big
ones”. Button and Barrichello were
the first, followed by Vettel.
FIA X Fota
Outside the tracks, the Fédération
Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA)
presented the changes in regulations
for 2010. Among them was a ceiling
of expenses that very much limited the
rich teams’ power. To them, the alter-
native would be to spend as much as
they pleased, but without having some
of the liberties which the teams follow-
ing the spending limit would have –
like the permission to use engines with
a higher rotation limit. Led by Ferrari
and Renault’s big man Flavio Briatore,
the Formula One Teams Association
(Fota) members threatened not to reg-
ister their cars for 2010 and to create
a side category in case FIA, run by Max
Mosley, didn’t reconsider.
A meeting on Briatore’s yacht in
the Monte Carlo Marina, Monaco, dark-
ened the brightness of the season’s
sixth race. Although a feeble agreement
has been settled between Fota and FIA
after this meeting, the quarrel would still
have additional chapters. Oblivious to
the fight outside the track, Button dom-
inated the weekend, starting once

Bar -
richello completou a terceira dobradinha da Brawn e Kimi
Räikkönen deu à Ferrari o primeiro pódio do ano.
erro do alemão.
Campos Grand Prix, Manor Grand Prix e Team USF1.
again from the pole po sition and win-
ning the ra ce, his fifth in the year.
Barrichello com pleted Brawn’s third
double victory and Kimi Räik könen gave
Ferrari their first podium of the year.
In Turkey, one more victory for But -
ton, who overcame Sebastian Vet tel
shortly after the start, by a mistake ma -
de by the German. Barrichello, for the first
time in the season, finished with out any
points, quitting due to problems in his
gearbox. The podium had Webber in se -
cond place and Vettel in third. Even
more exciting than the race were the
news of the teams interested in partici-
pating in Formula One in 2010. FIA indi-
cated the chosen ones: Campos Grand
Prix, Manor Grand Prix and Team USF1.
In legendary Silverstone, Jenson
But ton finally showed that he was not
un beat able. In his native country, he
saw the Red Bull cars making a double
victory on the podium, with Vettel in the
lead. Barrichello completed the po dium.
Out of the track, the Fota rebels
ga ve their ultimatum by presenting, on
the day following the race in England,
the calendar of their dissident champi-
onship. The impasse was only solved
when Fota and FIA compromised abo -
ut the new regulations for 2010. The
teams agreed to spend less (although
without an expenses ceiling), but in re-
turn they got Mosley not to try being
reelected for the presidency of FIA.
The following Grand Prix, in Ger -
many, was one more thorn in the side
for Jenson Button, the series leader,
who finished fifth in the race. Red
Bull’s Mark Webber got the first victo-
ry of his career in Nürburgring and put
himself up as a candidate for the title.
Vettel was beside him on the podium,
which had also Felipe Massa of Ferrari.
At full speed
Massa’s joy for having achieved his first
podium in the year turned to horror in
Hungary. During qualification, a spring
from Barrichello’s car got loose on the
track and hit Massa’s helmet at a high
speed; the driver passed out instantly
and hit his Ferrari in the tires protection.
The cranium sinking cau sed by the
part’s impact left the Brazi lian in a co-
ma for three days and out of the cham-
pionship until now. On the track, the
greats finally delivered. McLaren’s
Lewis Hamilton won the race, with
Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen co ming in sec-
ond. Meanwhile, Renault’s Nelsinho

acidente e abandonou a corrida.
Piquet was fired from the team by
Flavio Briatore, his own manager, due
to poor results.
After three weeks, Formula One re-
turned from its vacation, for the Grand
Prix of Europe, in Valencia, Spain.
During these 21 days, the F1 world was
once again shaken by off-track factors.
The first breaking news was BMW’s
announcement that it will be leaving F1
in 2010. The second was that Michael
Schu ma cher would be Massa’s substi-
tute in Ferrari. After some testing, the
multiple-time champion ended up
abandoning the idea for not feeling
physically fit enough to endure an F1
race. Luca Ba doer, the team’s test driv-
er, was chosen in Schumacher’s stead.
The Spanish street track was the
stage for Rubens Barrichello’s first win
of the year. It was also the tenth vic-
tory in his career and the 100th of a
Brazilian driver in the category. In
homage to Massa, Barrichello raced in
a helmet with the saying: “See you
soon on the track”.
The race in Spa-Francorchamps,
Belgium, was one of the most agitat-
ed in the season. Out of the track, by
the news that FIA was investigating
signs that Renault’s Nelsinho Piquet’s
crash in the Singapore Grand Prix in
2008 had been premeditated by Flavio
Briatore in order to benefit Fernando
Alonso, who won the race. On the
track, Italian Giancarlo Fisichella made
history by taking his modest Force
India to the pole position and finishing
the race in second place – the first
podium in the history of the Indian
team. Ahead of him was just Räik kö -
nen, in the first victory of the red team
in the season. Button got invol ved in
a crash and quit.
Two weeks later, in Monza, Italy, F1
remained appalled with the confession
made by Nelsinho Piquet to FIA that he
had, indeed, crashed on purpose in Sin -
ga pore, at Briatore’s reque st. Renault’s
di rector responded wi th a threat to sue

Fi -
notícia: a Renault demitira Flavio Briatore e Pat Symonds
India did well, with Adrian Sutil starting
in second and fi ni shing fourth.
Fisichella was transfer red to Ferrari,
taking Luca Badoer’s pla ce.
Barrichello got his second victory
in the year, reducing, though not by
much, the advantage of the leader
Jenson Button, who finished second.
A week prior to the Singapore
race came in the news: Renault had
fired Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds
(the team’s second man) for having
found evidence that both of them had
in fact orchestrated Nelsinho’s crash
in the previous year’s race. It also be-
came known that the accusation of re-
sults manipulation was presented by
Nelson Piquet, Nelsinho’s father. Days
later, in trial, Briatore would be banned
permanently from the sport by FIA,
Symonds suspended for five years
and Nelsinho pronounced innocent
for “rewarded denunciation”.
In Singapore, Hamilton was dom-
inant. He made the pole, secured the
lead and took home his second win of
the year. Toyota’s Glock finished sec-
ond in the nocturnal race on the streets
of the Asian city-state, and Button
gained one more point over Barrichello
by finishing fifth.
In the last race prior to the Bra -
zilian GP, in Suzuka, Japan, the most
exciting moments came during clas-
sification. Full of accidents, it had to
be interrupted several times, includ-
ing for medical assistance to Glock,
who, with a cut in his leg, didn’t take
part in the race. Vettel, Trulli and
Hamilton started in the first three po-
sitions and finished in this same order.
The first kept the mathematical
chances of winning the title. But
Button, still the leader, scored his
point, just one less than Barrichello,
the vice-leader, who has now just two
races to catch up with Button’s 15-
point advantage.
In Interlagos, Barrichello and Vettel
race to remain alive in the champi-
onship. Or, if Jenson Button can keep
at least a 10-point advantage over his
rivals, the championship will once
again be decided here.

gunda vitória no ano.
manterem vivos no campeonato.

The world’s largest racing category has technological development as one
of the main tools to instigate competition
Uma parceria deci siva
A decisive partnership
Ao longo das últimas décadas, parte significati-
va das inovações tecnológicas presentes nos
automóveis de passeio teve origem na Fórmula 1. A lis-
tais componentes facilitavam demais a vida do piloto e

During the last decades, a sig-
nificant share of technologi-
cal innovations present in passenger
cars has originated in Formula One.
The list is long: disc brakes; use of in-
novative materials, like the kevlar
(light and super-resistant plastic
fiber), in the chassis, or ceramic, in
the engine; tiptronic transmission
(automatic, with the option of man-
ual transmission); electronic suspen-
sion; traction control; surviving cell;
and so on. Not to mention new aero-
dynamic concepts, like the “wedge”
format of cars, similar to airplane
wings, which reduces air resistance
and generates performance gains
and fuel economy, and the stability
increase brought by another decisive
invention: the spoiler.
It may seem paradoxical – and in
some sense it is – but F1 has innovat-
ed so much in the last few years that
some of the technologies invented
for the race cars ended up banned in
order to make the races more excit-
ing. An example of that is the traction
control, banned in 2007 in favor of
competitiveness. Critics argue that
such components made things too
easy for the driver and rendered the
races a little too predictable.
For the 2009 season, a package of
technical and sportive changes was
implemented to make the champi-
onship more vibrant, increasing the
chan ces of victory for various teams,
with out, however, putting technology
aside. Among the main news is the re -
turn, after 11 years, of slick tires. With
no tread pattern, this type of tire has
20% more grip than those with tread
patterns, allowing the driver more
boldness in turns and overtakes. Each
team can use a maximum of eight
engines for the championship’s 17
sta ges. Should the team need an extra
pro peller, it loses ten places on the

perde dez colocações no grid.
O equipamento armazena a
Funciona as -
do, o equipamento ocupa espaço e interfere no equilí-

no volante.
vem atrás, facilitando as ultrapassagens.
A aposta no difusor ren-
star ting grid. The gear shift, in turn,
must resist four races and tests are
ban ned during the season.
But the most awaited innovation
in 2009 was the introduction of the
Ki ne tic Energy Recovery System
(Kers). The equipment stores the
energy that would be wasted during
braking and transforms it in extra
power for the car. It works like this:
every time the driver pumps the
brakes, the energy is transferred into
a generator that feeds a set of bat -
teries. Through a button placed on
the steering wheel, the driver acti va -
tes the supplementary energy in the
bat teries, which follows a reversed
way: it returns to the generator, which
now functions as an electric motor,
push ing the transmission and acting
as an auxiliary propeller. This action
in cre ases the engine power in up to
80 hp and can be activated in a peri-
od of seven seconds a lap, giving the
driver extra power for overtakes,
coming off of turns or the start.
But every innovation takes a toll.
The teams that decided to use the
Kers, such as Ferrari, McLaren and
Re nault, suffered to make it a real
com petitive advantage during the
cham pionship. This happened be cau -
se, in addition to being heavy, the
equip ment takes up space and interfe -
res with the car’s balance, thus risking
performance. Besides, the Kers is best
recommended for fast race tracks,
which are little “restrained”, with long
straight lines and high-speed turns,
like Monza, where power is more im -
por tant. It is not by chance that, out of
the 13 first races of the year, 8 have
been won by Brawn, a team that does
not use the Kers.
Speed and Transformation
Much more decisive for the 2009 sea-
son are the changes in aerodynamics
that reduced the downforce (effect
that presses the car against the
ground, creating more grip) and ren-
dered the cars up to 30% less stable.
Front wings got wider and closer to
the ground. Their angles can be ad jus -
ted up to twice a lap within a six-de -
gree range, by the driver himself
through a button on the steering
wheel. The back spoiler got higher but
smaller, aiming at reducing turbulence
for the car coming behind, thus facili -
ta ting overtakes. However, the flaps,
mi ni wings and other appendices that
one could see in the race cars up to
last season have been banned.
Brawn was the team that knew
how to take more advantage of the
changes in aerodynamics, investing,
for example, in a differentiated de sign
for the back diffuser. The diffuser is a
component that makes the air pass
quicker underneath the car, thus ren -
dering it more stable. With more grip,
the speed in turns increases, being of
help in “restrained” ra ce tracks. The
investment in the diffuser yielded pre-
cious seconds in various races for
Brawn and was one of the reasons for
the team’s large dominance in 2009’s
teams and drivers championship.

criativa design, cultura e, claro, moda. O interior da loja
é igualmente encantador. O pro jeto do de signer multi-
mídia Muti Ran dolph privilegia elementos divertidos,
car Freire.
names who have already displayed their
art there. The idea is to creatively combi-
ne design, culture and, of course, fashion.
The shop’s interior is equally en chan ting.
The project by multimedia designer Muti
Randolph favors fun elements, such as
the chandelier-shaped displays and the
surprising plastic garden.
In the case of Zeferino, the women’s
shoes brand, Arthur Casas was the one in
charge of designing the store, also in
Oscar Freire. The architect put aside the
conventional glass shopwindow and
created a gap that runs through the enti-
re entrance wall and is used to display the
items. Different shades of gold complete
the decoration and give the space a refi-
ned air. Casas is also responsible for the
extremely chic project of Reinaldo Lou -
renço’s shop in Bela Cin tra.
Fine jewelry
Jardins also concentrates some of the
most desired jewelry stores on the planet.
Cartier, known for its sophisticated rings,
necklaces, watches, tie clips and the clas-
sic women’s scarves, is settled in Had -
dock Lobo. Another brand that en ti ces je -
welry lovers is H. Stern, in Os car Freire.
The refinement starts with the display
win dow, where art works are always exhi-
bited. For the convenience of customers,
the shop offers an exclusive bar and an
event room. Designer Carla Amo rim, in
turn, opened her concept-shop in Os car
Freire last year. The inspiration for the deli-
cate pieces comes from tropicalism and
from the geometrical li nes of Os car Ni e -
meyer – nothing could be more Bra zi lian.
Another interesting option is Antonio
Bernardo’s shop, in Bela Cintra. The pla -
ce attracts trendy consumers who come
in search of the famous little leather strips
with gold pendants that became a fas-
hion frenzy, among other masterpieces
de sig ned by Bernardo. Lastly, our tip is to
visit Mont blanc, the first high luxury bou-
tique by a world brand to be established
in Os car Freire. Majestic watches and the
celebrated and highly limited edition
pens made the brand a world reference
in good taste and exclusivity.

No Bardot Bo -
nagasaki, por exemplo, leva vodca, gim, saquê e xa -
ro pe de gengibre. A trilha sonora da casa, de projeto
ar qui tetônico imponente e sofisticado, vai do jazz à
bossa nova. Rua Clodomiro Amazonas, 260, Itaim
Bibi. Tel. 11 3071-2859
SerafimThere is no shortage of good gastronomic options in
the Moema neighborhood, and one of them is Serafim bar.
There, the grilled dishes are the flagship of the house, which
is one of the most sought after for happy hours in the area.
Beef cuts like picanha and bife ancho undergo special pre -
pa ration in an Argentinean parrilla, which guarantees the
meats softness and flavor. The traditional escondidinhos
appear in new versions, like the Serafim, prepared with crab
meat. The caipirinhas also avoid the commonplace and
appear with in gre dients such as lychee and mango. Ala -

Bardot Boteco BistrôThe authentic bar culinary, with a touch of “high cuisine”,
is the concept behind the menu of one of the most popular
bars in the Itaim Bibi neighborhood. At Bardot Boteco Bistrô,
tra ditional tidbits receive interpretations inspired in the French
cuisine. Among them are the duck parmentier, the leek es -
con di dinho and the black rice ball with Roquefort cheese.
Drinks don’t fall behind in flavor and creativity. The nagasaki,
for example, is made of vodka, gin, sake and ginger syrup.
The soundtrack in the house, with a grand and sophisticated
archi tecture design, ranges from jazz to Bossa Nova. Rua
Clo do miro Amazonas, 260, Itaim Bibi. Tel. 11 3071-2859

SubAstorLocalizado no subsolo do bar Astor, a nova casa é en -
to ma te e caviar de vodca e gim. Para comer, pe quenas por-

SubAstorLocated underground the Astor bar, the new house is
wrapped in an atmosphere of mystery and sophistication.
The place was inspired in the American cocktail bars. Its
cosmopolitan look is in elements like the low light, the mir-
rored columns, the red velvet curtains and the walls cov-
ered with translucent bottles, which create the perfect set-
ting for enjoying the menu’s classic and modern drinks.
Focused on cocktails, the beverage menu brings options
ranging from the traditional dry martini to recipes made
with molecular mixology techniques, like the red snaper,
prepared with tomato juice and vodka and gin caviar. As
for eating, the small portions allow the tasting of various
tidbits, always harmonized with the drinks. Rua Delfina,

Pirajá“Low gastronomy” is the star of Pirajá. The bar calls
itself Rio’s corner in São Paulo. This is because the inspira-
tion for its atmosphere and menu comes from Rio de
Janeiro. The most famous tidbit – and one of the most
ordered – is the bolinho carioca, made with dry meat and
squash. On Saturdays, they serve a special feijoada recipe
which was created by Tia Surica, a samba artist from Velha
Guarda da Portela (Portela’s Old School). The chope (draught
beer), always at the right temperature, is perfect to accom-
pany a variety of typical Brazilian dishes and tidbits. Av. Bri -

VoltO neon inspirou a concepção do Volt. Lá,
essas peças luminosas ganham destaque e
compõem um ambiente moderno e cos -

da casa. Rádios virtuais de todo o mundo são
a base da programação musical, voltada às
raízes do eletrônico. Do bar, além dos drin-

exemplo é o ginger martini, feito com gim,

Genésio Pasta e ChoppGenésio is one the most frequented addresses in the
Vila Madalena neighborhood, especially late at night, as its
