Before we get started….

You don’t have to know iOS programming to create an iPad application. There is wifi at KK and you can just make a webpage. Each project has a $100 budget. You can apply (to the class) for additional funds if you need it.


Financial Literacy


Build an ATM

Students need experience working with realistic financial services. In this project they will create an prototype ATM where students can swipe a card, interact with a touchscreen, and receive paper receipts. This prototype might also help students manage their KK points. Mentor: Mary Alice Wyatt, Amy Hurst


Build an on-line bill paying website

Students need experience working with realistic financial services. In this project the student will develop a realistic web interface for students to practice managing their money and bills online. This website would support multiple bill-paying interactions and will either mimic existing sites, or design new ones to meet educational objectives. Mentor: Mary Alice Wyatt, Dr. Ravi Kuber


Wheelchairs and Safe Driving


Camera on a (power) wheelchair

Individuals in power wheelchairs can’t easily see what is behind them. In this project you would to equip power wheelchairs with a camera and a display. You will also explore potential display opportunities for power chairs, and how they could be mounted to the chair. Mentor: Liz Wohlberg, Amy Hurst


Driving Simulator

Learning to drive a power wheelchair can be complicated. In this project you will design (and build) a prototype driving simulator/game for individuals learning to drive. Mentor: Julia Klag


Mounting an iPad

Finding a safe and sturdy way to mount an iPad on a wheelchair is difficult and the current solutions are expensive. In this project a student will design a more affordable, sturdy, and flexible solution. Mentor: Susan Schaffer


Web Development


Accessible Intranet

Develop an accessible intranet for Kennedy Krieger high school. This will have a student portal (with logins) and ways for students to receive customized links and share important information. Student will have the opportunity to design and build the first prototype of this intranet. Mentor: Frank Wright


Website Redesign

Redesign the existing parent’s page for Kennedy Krieger. During the redesign the student will gain IT experience working in a large organization and accessibility standards. Mentor: David Stone


Transition Opportunities

Deciding what to do after high school is difficult, and often complex. In this project you will design a comprehensive resource (webiste?) for parents on post-grad supportive employment options for students with severe disabilities Mentor: Chuck Durgin


Teaching Tools


Accessible SMART Board

KK currently uses SMART boards in many of their classrooms, but these are not always easily accessible by teachers (who are across the room or in a wheelchair. In this project a student will prototype alternative input devices to interact with a SMART board (such as laser pointer, joystick, or gestures (using a Kinect?). Mentor: Lauren Heflin


Track Teacher Movement

Education researchers often need to track teacher behavior. In this project a student will use explore different techniques to track teacher movements (possibly with a Kinect) and detect stress in their voice. Mentor: Derek Glaaser

Curriculum Development

Create Something New


Work Based Learning

Build app to allow a student on site at a job placement to communicate on some schedule with his KKS job coach. The app would also have some reminders for the worker about the specific things he or she needs to remember about their workplace and their job. The app could also allow the mentor at the workplace partner to communicate with the job coach. There could be a structured set of statements or questions to answer and it could create a daily record of the progress the worker is having and any issues on the job site that are contributing to success of problems. It could then be part of the documentation that we need to account for the benefits of off campus job placements and could lead to more and more hours on the job site and a possible job for the student as they approach graduation.

Flexible Template Activities

Developing flexible template activities (matching, sorting, memory, cut-n-paste, etc.) could prove useful to teachers and doable in the given timeframe. Teachers would need to be able to add individualized content and visuals to the template. The use of the iPad could reduce the impact of fine motor deficiencies, provide supports for visual learners, etc. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know, so I can continue to be thinking, hopefully in the right direction. Mentor: Kadie Miller


Sequencing Activities

Students need to learn the steps to many different activities. In this project students will design (and build) a way for KK instructors to help students make sure they follow the steps for a given task in the correct order. Mentor: Claire Donehower


Reading Comprehension Checks

Reading is frequently evaluated with comprehension checks, that may feel artificial or cannot be automatically administered. In this project students will explore how to integrate comprehension checks into storybooks or adult training, where the reader will re-do / read a section of they answer the questions incorrectly. Mentor: Patty Laibstain


Accessible Math

Students with physical impairments who use a single switch have difficulty accessing higher-level math programs such as Matlab, Maple, and Mathematica. In this project a student will either develop a solution to making these apps accessible through a single switch, or find an alternative. Mentor: Kelly Meadows

Work with KK instructors to develop curriculum that can be used by KK teachers to both create relevant apps for their students, and also used to teach students how to program. Mentor: Frank Wright


Making Objects and Gadgets


Adaptive Art Tools

Unfortunately, there are not many art tools that are accessible to individuals with physical or dexterity impairments. In this project students will design alternative solutions that can be 3D printed. This can include both painting and drawing, but also photography. Mentor: Leslie Cohen


Wearable reminder

Students often forget things. In this project you will build a wearable gadget that a student could use to help remember things they need (such as homework). This could also tie into a program that helps make sure tasks are sequenced in a given way. Mentor: Mary Ellen Lewis


Emotion


Social Stories Students with autism frequently use social stories to learn and understand a desired behavior. Potential projects:

•  Embed the stories in the environment (furniture, blanket, animal) or person (clothing)

•  Create system to easily record social stories (could be audio or video) with cell phone?

•  Explore how a student could input emotional state to control which story to hear.

Sensory room

Students with behavioral problems may find it easier to modify their behavior in a sensory room. These are often dark rooms with interesting things to touch, look at, or feel. In this project students would explore new technology for a sensory room including

•  Weighted blanket that plays audio •  Lights that respond to input

Biofeedback

Sometimes providing a student with biofeedback can help them regulate their behavior, and potentially reduce the intensity or duration of an outburst. In this project a student will explore pairing biofeedback sensors and multimodal visualizations to help regulate behavior outbursts. Mentor: TBD

Accessibility in the Cloud.

The student will conduct a literature review of research relating to cloud-based accessibility initiatives. They will also conduct fieldwork to identify the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities when manipulating accessibility settings on various devices, and determine attitudes towards cloud-based initiatives. Mentor: Dr. Ravi Kuber


Facial gesture-based authentication.

The student will conduct a short literature review relating to gestural authentication mechanisms, and mechanisms for individuals with disabilities. They will then use the Emotiv Epoc headset to develop a simple program to recognize facial gestures and conscious thoughts, and use this as a method to permit entry to a system. Java skills are required to develop the graphical interface. Mentor: Dr. Ravi Kuber


Remote testing.

The student would be required to conduct a literature review examining remote testing with disabled users, conduct remote accessibility evaluations of an existing web site or game, and document each of the case studies. Possibility of extending this into an independent study. Mentor: Dr. Ravi Kuber


Sonify Gestures

Explore the relationship between gestures and sound. Students will design sounds to accompany different gestures, that could ultimately be used by people with vision impairments to provide new feedback. Mentor: Shaun Kane
