What is PROJECT ?

• Project tiger is one of the well publicised wildlife campaigns in the world to protect our tigers.

• Asian countries left the tiger population on the verge of extinction due to which scheme to protect tiger is formulated

When and Who it launched?• It was launched by our former Prime

Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi in 1973.

• It envisaged the setting up of tiger reserves to help in maintaining the population of tigers.

• In 1973, nine reserves were set up Assam, Bihar, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan and the Sunderbans.

Why is it launched ?

• Project Tiger was started because, to control as well as supplement the dwindling population of the Royal Bengal tigers in the country.

• As per estimates, the number of tigers was about 40,000 at the beginning of the 20th century.

• The first tiger census in 1972 showed the number to be 1827 throughout the country.

• In 1973 ,the authorities realized that the tiger population has dwindled to 1827 from an estimated 55000 at the turn of the century .

What are its significance ?

• It mainly aims to conserve tigers by eliminating any kind of human exploitation.

• It is also an important animal for ecosystem.• It maintains the balance in environment.
