(This sub-course counts as 33% of the final Special Ed 100 grade.)

This sub-course is a systematic instruction covering phonemes, affixes, and roots and is used to develop the ability to read and therefore comprehend college-level textbooks and materials. Similar instruction is employed to teach spelling. Syllabication for both reading and spelling purposes is also taught. This course does not count toward the 120 credits necessary for graduation. For students who are already accurate and fluent readers, but lack comprehension skills, a separate section of the Special Education 100 course is offered. Students are placed in this section on the basis of pretest scores.

(This sub-course counts for 34% of the final Special Ed 100 course grade.)

This sub-course will provide the participant with a variety of methods and applications aimed at increasing the participant’s knowledge and skills with the intent that participants will apply these skills to succeeding in their freshman composition course.

Course Descriptions

Registering for Summer Classes Students must register for two courses: Special Education 100 - Multisensory Reading and Spelling (3 credits) and Art 105 Understanding the Arts (3 credits).

Registration forms for these courses are included with this packet and are due on April 15, 2015.

Written Expression

Some time will be devoted to assessing career interests and helping each student with career planning. Structured activities will be included that are designed to assist the student in building new friendships at the university.

“Helping people understand a different way of learning!”

-Staff

1

The first day of classes is Monday, June 15th, with classes beginning at

8:00 am. Each student will be given a schedule indicating the times for

each course. On the first day of classes, a Project Success staff member (in

a red PS T-shirt) will meet students living in Taylor Hall in the lobby at

8:00 am to start the day. Any student who is commuting during the

summer program, should report to the Project Success office by 8:00 am to

start the day.

The last day of classes will be Wednesday, July 22nd. There is no formal

graduation ceremony. Instead, the staff will meet individually with each

student to discuss his or her progress in the summer program, including

grades in the three courses and general performance in the program.

Students and parents will be able to sign up for a meeting time at the

Orientation on Sunday, June 14th. At the final meeting, the staff will make

recommendations regarding the students return for the fall term, along

2

with suggestions to maximize the student’s chances

for success at UW Oshkosh. Parents are welcome and

encouraged to attend the conference.

Move in and Orientation

Students have the opportunity to move into Taylor Hall in the morning of Sunday, June 14th, starting at 9:00. The Project Success orientation will take place at 1:00 pm and will cover the following topics: • Staff member introductions • Expectations for the summer program • First day instructions • Opportunity for students and

parents/guardians to sign up for end-of-program conferences (July 22nd)

Take Your Placement Tests

Placement tests have no bearing on the

student’s admission status into Project

Success or the University, but are important

to help place students in the most

appropriate math and English classes and

are necessary for scheduling fall semester

courses. Placement tests should be

completed at least two weeks prior to the

student’s Odyssey date. Students may use a

standard calculator (no graphing functions,

etc.) on the math portion of the

examination. Additional placement

information is enclosed.

Attend Your Odyssey Day

What is Odyssey? Odyssey is UW

Oshkosh’s way of introducing new students

to campus: allowing them to become

familiar with buildings, providing pointers

as they choose courses, and much more.

Your Odyssey day includes several

informational sessions, small group

discussions, one-on-one advising and tours.

In the afternoon, you will be putting

together your own schedule with the help of

Academic Advising and Odyssey staff. You

will also receive your fall class schedule.

Your Odyssey date should be scheduled

summer program, we will review your

schedule and advise you in making
