In Their Own words: Faye Hacker & Tony DeDominick

Faye Hacker

my earliest memories of dancing are when i was 2 years old and walked on my toes....it felt like dancing! i began my formal training when i became a student at ut Knoxville and took all the dance classes i could—ballet, tap, modern, jazz, and social—for electives while earning my bachelor’s degree in sociology. after graduation i continued taking dance classes as a hobby and joined the Knoxville dance theater. i decided i loved dance so much i wanted to make it my career, so i took a training class at fred astaire dance studio and became a full-time instructor and have been teaching ever since. i have competed in ballroom, latin, and country and western dance styles and have danced in many showcases and choreographed and trained students for compe-titions and showcases. i cur-rently still teach private lessons as well as groups. i’ve also performed with the salsa loco rueda group and continue to teach all types of couples dancing and line dance. i began teaching non-credit dance courses at ut with tony dedominick in the winter of 2000. he is an excellent dancer and teacher. We meet so many wonderful people who take our ut courses and they are always so much fun!!

Tony DeDominick and Faye Hacker have more than 25 years of combined experience

as dance instructors. Their non-credit courses are among our most popular.

See page 35 for details.

Tony DeDominick

a long time ago in a university not far away, i was studying mathematics with a minor in physical education with aspirations of teaching high school math and possibly coaching football or track as an assistant. While taking an obligatory dance class, my graduate student instructor, debbie ashton, took note of my potential and asked me if i wanted to help her teach a social dance class for the continuing education program. i agreed, and as they say, the rest is history. i taught with debbie for many years, and later cindy hughett, and now faye hacker. not only is faye a knowledgeable and talented dancer and instructor, but she also

happens to be one of the nicest people i’ve ever met. it’s a joy to work with

her, and i think students agree that we have good chemistry to-gether. i’ve learned a lot teaching with her. aside from the exercise, the best part of this business is all of the great people i get to meet in a fun setting. some of my best friends

today are folks i met in class in past years, and i meet more every term. it’s

very gratifying to run in to a former student and have them tell me how they remember what a good time they had in class. having done this for more than 20 years now, i’ve met a lot of people, including mayors, superintendents, ceos, and a host of local celebrities. i never did get to coach, but i still teach mathematics at two local community colleges. happily, i got to marry my favorite

student, my wife Joan.

“Aside from the exercise, the best part of this business is all of the great people I get to

meet in a fun setting.” —Tony DeDominick
