Using Rubber Instead of Plastic

for Egg Trays

Page 4: Project in research (congress defense) part 1 of 2

Abstract:The researcher's study is entitled “Rubber as an Alternative Material in

Making Egg Trays” which can be a possible alternative quality of egg tray that is more durable and ecofriendly to use than the usual plastic egg trays. The rubber egg tray is made up of silicone rubber which has some elements and characteristics that specialize in shock-resistance and extreme temperature resistance that can be safer for the people to use. In addition, the egg tray itself is just a base; it is a prototype whereas the egg tray can be enhanced accordingly to how the user will want it to be (appearance, durability, or even strength).

The group first tested the durability of the rubber egg tray by experimenting it on ice, fire and weight. They also tested the number of eggs that will break when dropped. It was observed that using rubber can be highly effective for the protection of the encased eggs inside. After testing, they asked respondents, who are working in bakery shops, to answer a few questions about its quality and they researchers got positive reviews with the study the group has been working on. It proves that the project that the researchers did is highly durable, and highly appealing to the eye of the respondents.

They have concluded that using the rubber egg tray is more safe, durable and eco-friendly than the usual egg trays. This can help in protecting the fragile eggs inside it, help save money, and even save Mother Earth.

Background of the Study:

The study wants to know what kind of egg trays can be more effective. The group tried to use rubber egg trays as and an alternative for plastic egg trays. The group observed that plastic is one of the major pollutants in the Earth. The group thought that plastic egg trays also contribute to them. The group thought that plastic egg tray doesn’t have the capacity to protect eggs in different situations. That’s why the group decided to use rubber instead of plastic for egg trays. In this way, the group can reduce plastic-caused pollution and number of eggs that will break because it is recyclable, shock proof and elastic.

A. Research Problem: Which egg tray, rubber or plastic, will be more effective in enduring;

different extremes of temperatures; reducing the

number of egg breakage and enduring heavy weights?B. General Objective : This study aims to know which egg trays,

rubber or plastic, is most effective in reducing egg breakage.C. Specific Objective:

1. Aims to increase the benefits of retailers by protecting the no. of eggs that will break to increase production.

2. Aims to know if silicon rubber is a more effective material to use in

making egg trays. 3. Aims to reduce plastic-caused pollution

by using rubber egg trays.

Statement of the Problem:

Page 7: Project in research (congress defense) part 1 of 2

The study covers the effectiveness of rubber as an alternative material in making egg trays. To test its effectiveness, the group will test the properties of rubber that are not present in plastics. The group will have egg retailers and egg sellers as their respondents. The group will only test the effectiveness of silicon rubber. This study won’t cover the effectiveness of other kinds of rubber. This study will take four to six (4-6) days of work, two to three (2-3) days for collecting of materials, one to two (1-2) days of melting and molding and one (1) day for cooling and hardening.

The table #1 describes the tests that the researchers made during their research. According to the table, three tests were made, namely -- the weights test, extreme temperature and shock-resistance test. The researchers compared the rubber and egg trays through these ways They tried to do the weight and extreme temperature test by exposing them to such environment for a maximum of 5 minutes.. First of all, they compared it by testing how long each tray could endure a heavy weight using 10 lbs weight. Both egg trays have endured it for 5 minutes. Next test, we exposed it to extreme temperatures. They did the 1st test by exposing both egg trays on fire. Apparently, the rubber egg tray only lasted for a minute until it catches fire. While the plastic egg tray caught fire on contact. The third test is the shock resistance test which the researchers did by dropping the trays. Out of 6 eggs, the rubber egg tray protected an egg while the plastic egg tray’s eggs were all broken. Out of 2 eggs, the rubber egg tray protected an egg too while the plastic egg tray’s egg where all broken. The table shows the data that the rubber egg tray is more durable than the plastic egg trays.

The table #2 shows how the respondents judged the researchers’ project. They asked the respondents in 5 ways -- durability, appearance, shape, scent and productivity status (if it will be commercialized) respectively. In the first question, 14 agreed while 1 disagreed that the egg tray is more durable than the usual egg trays. In the second question 13 agreed and 2 disagreed that it is more appealing than the usual egg trays. In the third question, 13 agreed and 2 disagreed that the shape is good for protection issues. In the fourth question 11 agreed and 4 disagreed that the rubber tray produces a good smell. In the last question, 15 agreed that the egg trays are good enough to be marketable and salable.
