What else can EcodEX answer ?
Examples of how EcodEX could or has been used
• Recipe optimization
• Packaging ecodesign
• Supply chain optimization
• Consumer use optimization

Challenges
• Need to train the organization & employees
– to get started on sustainability, LCA
– to maintain and evolve over the long term
• Making the approach work in a large organization, given:
– different cultures
– bugs, limitations, failures
• LCI data availability in the food sector
p. 10Urs Schenker, Nestlé Research Center Oct 8th, 2014
Credible LCI data in the tool is a key requirement
• World Food LCA Database to develop a comprehensive
international database on food ingredients & processes
– Multi-stakeholder initiative (companies, research inst.)
– Food ingredients from different countries, & cultivation
methods (conventional, organic, …)
– Aligned with established LCA methodology
• More efforts will be required in the future
– Nestlé will continue co-funding publicly available LCI databases
– Similar initiatives from other organizations are encouraging
• Key challenges for the future
– Harmonization of LCI database methods from different sources
– Business models to keep databases updated in the long term
