When objects appear to weigh the same, we have balance, equilibrium. Differences may disturb the equilibrium, creating imbalance, chaos or energy in a composition. Symmetrical Balance: shapes are mirrored on either side of an (imaginary) axis Asymmetrical Balance: shapes are different on either side of an axis, but balance remains intact because of texture, orientation, direction etc. Radial Balance/Symmetry: one focal point becomes the energy source from which all other objects/shapes grow. A spiral is a variation on this is. Imbalance: tips the scale entirely, axis unstable, equilibrium disturbed. ARTD 110 2D Design Project #4 Balance/Imbalance, Symmetry/Asymmetry

Principle: Balance imagine compositions have an axis or a scale, which, like a teeter- totter‐ moves up and down, depending on what’s on either side of the fulcrum. When objects appear to weigh the same, we have balance, equilibrium. Differences may disturb the equilibrium, creating imbalance, chaos or energy in a composition.

• Symmetrical Balance: shapes are mirrored on either side of an (imaginary) axis• Asymmetrical Balance: shapes are different on either side of an axis, but balance remains

intact because of texture, orientation, direction etc.• Radial Balance/Symmetry: one focal point becomes the energy source from which all

other objects/shapes grow. A spiral is a variation on this is.• Imbalance: tips the scale entirely, axis unstable, equilibrium disturbed.•

Balance relates to Visual Weight

Some things that affect visual weight: Size – As you would expect larger elements carry more weight Color – It’s not fully understood why, but some colors are perceived as weighing more than others. Red seems to be heaviest while yellow seems to be lightest. Also the intensity of color affects visual weight. Density – Packing more elements into a given space, gives more weight to that space Value – A darker object will have more weight than a lighter object Negative Space – Positive space tends to weigh more than negative space

Project # 4 – Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Digital or Physical Collage

For this project you will create 3 collages using Photoshop or magazines and a copy machine. The composition the collages will illustrate the following: symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance, and radial balance.

Each collage will include at least 5-10 found image samples. You can manipulate the direction, angle, scale, boldness, translucency, contrast, etc. from these samples. In a physical collage, you may use copies of samples to change the scale (size), to invert, etc. The collages may be on other paper, such as construction paper, or on Bristol. They should be 8.5 x 11" or larger. Color or black & white.

Terms for SB

Balance it is very important to balance many things in a composition, visual interest, unity and

variety, figure and ground, as well as, realism and abstraction

Visual Weight is the ability of an element within a composition to draw attention to itself. It is often created through the use of contrast, size or color

Symmetrical shapes are mirrored on either side of an (imaginary) axis.

Asymmetrical Balance shapes are different on either side of an axis, but balance remains intact because of texture, orientation, direction etc.

Radial Balance/Symmetry one focal point becomes the energy source from which all other objects/shapes grow. A spiral is a variation on this is.

Imbalance tips the scale entirely, axis unstable, equilibrium disturbed.
