ART 218: INTRO TO PHOTO SPRING 2016 Project 3: New Still Life - Ambitious Constructions Due: March 21 + March 22, 2016 Continuing further our investigation of photographic historical precedents, through our personal work: enter the photographic Still Life! Having recently received a great deal of attention and resurgence by a young generation of photographic artists, the still life remains a rich way of working within a studio practice. With digital tools, and appropriation, and material, artists can cut + paste, assemble + construct to create worlds that exist only for the camera. For the next critique, please make still life photographs. In each of your studies, examine the theme dierently. Suggestions, (not requirements): Make yourself a variety of constructions or set ups. Look at details in the world. Collaborate with others(bonus points). Use image archives to bring material from the digital world into print form. Be playful! Think diorama / mini stage set / table top. Reference a favorite painting. Host a dinner, make a special meal and photograph it, photograph the remains. What are your favorite objects? Construct narrative through objects: who is the character behind these objects? Or simply play with form/texture or process. For critique bring 8 beautiful prints, and 4 contact sheets, that speak to one another as a body of work, but investigate the still life in a variety of ways. If you’re having trouble with inspiration, do more research. In many ways, this is as open ended as any of the other photographic tropes! several suggested artist: Frederick Sommer Jan Groover Barbara Kasten Laura Letinsky Lori Nix Thomas Demand James Casebere Daniel Gordon Lucas Blalock Rachel Stern Tre Wright Roe Ehtridge Charlie Rubin Matt Leifheit with Cynthia Talmadge Sam Talor Wood (rotting fruit video piece) Quentin Shih Jessica Eaton Christo and Andrew Christopher Williams Otto Kaan image: Daniel Gordon Page of 1 1
