WHY DO YOU NEED TO DO PROJECT?

Apply knowledge that has been learned in class. Gain experience in developing a system. Learn something new. To create a sample of your work. Requirement to get a degree.

Page 3: Project 1 Briefing - SN Department_SEM2_1516

PROJECT 1 ACTIVITIES

• Find supervisor • Discuss a topic with your supervisor or choose from

system: http://sephiroth/spmsv2/index.cfm• Submit your initial report• Keep a logbook• Set a meeting with supervisor every week• Discuss with examiner at least once• Write the draft report• Perform presentation• Write the final report

Page 4: Project 1 Briefing - SN Department_SEM2_1516

PROJECT 1 VS. PROJECT 2• The actual scope for project 1 and project 2

depends on the methodology used.• Example 1: Waterfall Model

• Project 1: Literature review, user requirements, system design.

• Project 2: Implementation, testing.• Example 2: Prototyping Model

• Project 1: Literature review, system design (maybe partially), prototype 1, prototype testing.

• Project 2: More design, prototype 2 (or more), final product, testing.

• Discuss expected deliverables (for both Project 1 and 2) with your supervisor.

Page 5: Project 1 Briefing - SN Department_SEM2_1516

LOGBOOK• Each student is required to keep a logbook • can be obtained from

• Moodle-lms.uniten.edu.my• Project 1 – Sem 2 2015-2016

• All your progress must be written in the logbook.• Bring the logbook during your meeting with

supervisor.• Supervisor need to read and sign your logbook.

• At the end of the semester, if there are less than SIX signatures, your supervisor has the right to give you an E.

RESEARCH BASED PROJECT

A Research-based project is an initiative that provides students analyzing related topics in the scope of system and networking.

The selected research topic should be feasible and within the scope expected of an undergraduate.

The project may involve various types of research such collection and evaluation of data, simulation and evaluation of a specific technique, algorithm or protocol, or any other work that contributes to a larger research project as specified by the project supervisor

Page 8: Project 1 Briefing - SN Department_SEM2_1516

APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT

PROJECT • Mobile Application • System and Network Implementation• Embedded System• Computer & Network Application

Page 9: Project 1 Briefing - SN Department_SEM2_1516

PROJECT EXAMINER

• Each project will be assigned an examiner.• An examiner is another lecturer who will evaluate

your project together with your supervisor.• Examiners will choose the projects that

he/she wants to examine.• You have no control over who your examiner will

be.• It is COMPULSORY for you to discuss your

project with your examiner at least once during the semester.• Many students don’t do this. • It may cause problem later on.

Page 10: Project 1 Briefing - SN Department_SEM2_1516

PROJECT 1 EVALUATION• Marks will be given by your project supervisor and

your examiner.• Marks allocation:

FINAL REPORT

Read the COIT’s final year project guidelines to learn about the format.Should roughly follow our suggested report contents.Make sure grammar is correct.Write with intention that somebody else who read the report will be able to understand what are you supposed to do for the project.Make sure all contents cited from other sources are referenced properly.

FACILITIES

• Money allocation• Each of you are allocated RM 400.00 for buying

equipment. [project 2 only!!!!!]• Procedures:

• Get form from lab technician.• Fill in the required information.• Get your supervisor to verify.• Bring back the form to lab technician.• The technician will buy the items for you.

Page 23: Project 1 Briefing - SN Department_SEM2_1516

FACILITIES• You CANNOT buy:

• Pirated software• Books• Software that is already available in the lab.

• Remember that whatever you buy, they belong to the college.• Make sure you return them to the lab by the end

of your project.• Failure to do so may cause your grade to be

suspended.

Page 24: Project 1 Briefing - SN Department_SEM2_1516

FACILITIES• Final year project lab• There is a computer lab dedicated for

final year project students.• BW-4-R06.• You can use the lab for:

• Research (browsing the Web, etc).• Development.

• If you need to install any specific software, please contact the lab technicians.

FAQS

• I cannot finish my project 1 in this semester. Can I extend?•NO.. Definitely NO unless you have a

health problem (e.g. MC for 2 months• Can I change my project in the middle of project 1?

• Yes, with the permission of the supervisor.

Page 26: Project 1 Briefing - SN Department_SEM2_1516

FAQS

• What if I don’t like my examiner?• Live with it…

• What if my supervisor becomes unavailable?• If it can be planned (i.e. maternity leave), please

make arrangement beforehand.• If it cannot be planned (i.e. death, hospitalization,

lecturer got fired), please see the project coordinator.

Page 27: Project 1 Briefing - SN Department_SEM2_1516

COMMON PROBLEMS• Fail to follow the deadline.• Poor attendance for meeting with supervisor.• Fail to meet the examiner at least once earlier during

the project.• Plagiarism / cheating.
