Sailboarding in Sydney HarbourAs Australia’s premier waterway, Sydney Harbour and itsconnecting bays provide unmatched opportunities for allforms of boating from power craft to sailboards.

It is also one of the world’s busiest harbours, with smallcraft and sailboards sharing the water with largecommercial ships and ferries.

An understanding of the safe boating rules, which apply tothem no less than to other craft, will help sailboard ridersto enjoy their exciting sport in safety.

Remember the three Cs of water safety - care, courtesyand commonsense.

Safety equipment Sailboard riders are required to wear a lifejkacket orpersonal flotation device (PFD) when more than 400metres from the nearest shore. However, riders areadvised to wear such a vest at all times.

Areas for sailboardingSailboard riding is permitted in all areas of SydneyHarbour except:

(a) within the area coloured yellow on the map overleaf;

(b) within the fifth and sixth spans from the northern endof the Ryde Road Bridge located approximately 140 metres upstream from Mortlake Point;

(c) within the third and fourth spans from the northernend of the Ryde Rail Bridge located approximately 210 metres from Mortlake Point; and

(d) within 50 metres of any public jetty or certaincommercial mooring buoys listed overleaf or any vesselmoored to any such buoy.

These represent the commercial shipping areas and areaswhere sailboard riders would be at risk from othervessels.

The use of a sailboard in a prohibited area carries amaximum penalty of $1500.

Navigation regulationsSailboard riders are required to observe the Navigation(Collision) Regulations, which are set out in more detail inthe Safe Boating Handbook.

Simplified diagrams illustrating the Give Way rules are below.
