How to use credits and build up qualifications

All our accredited qualifications are part of the QCF Qualifications and Curriculum Framework. Credits are given for each course. These can be used to build up from an award to certificate to a diploma. Learners can complete and award and at a later date they can use the credits from that qualification to do a certificate or a diploma in the future.

Training Needs Analysis

Progression Training can help employers to identify the individual training needs of their staff. We can then plan a programme of training if required to meet those needs.

Introduction to Progression Training

Progression Training has been delivering quality work based learning in Wales since 2003. Our clients have included Mencap, NHS, County Councils, Laura Ashley, National Childrens Homes. We are an accredited assessment centre with City and Guilds, Institute of Leadership and Management and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.Our aim is to work with employers to deliver quality training to meet the needs of their staff whilst enabling them to meet statutory requirements.

We specialise in Health and Social Care, Business and Management and Customer Service All our trainers and assessors have many years experience working in a variety of settings.

We also have funding from The Welsh Government for some of our qualifications enabling employers to access this training free of charge.

As part of our quality assurance we are inspected by the Welsh Government as well as awarding organisations such as City and Guilds and Institute of Leadership and Management all our training meets rigorous quality standards

Health and Social Care

These qualifications are designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge needed to care for others in a broad range of health or social care settings.

A Diploma in Health and Social Care is flexible to suit all fields of health and social care. Learners can select a pathway that suits their role - for example, working with people with a learning disability, people with dementia or children and young people.

This is the main qualification required by the Quality Care Commission in England and the Care Councils in Wales and Northern Ireland.

These are the recognised qualifications for care workers and senior care workers in health and social care.

These qualifications are assessed at work. For each unit, the assessor will watch and asks questions of the learner as they perform a task, or will look at a portfolio of work that the learner has built as formal evidence of learning. Then they confirm they’ve got the skills to do the job well.

Level 2 QCF Diploma for Health and Social Care (adults) – 46 creditsYou complete nine core units at level 2:

• Introduction to communication in health, social care or children's and young people's settings• Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children's and young people's settings• Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children's and young people's settings• Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care• The role of the health and social care worker• Implement person-centred approaches in health and social care• Contribute to health and safety in health and social care• Handle information in health and social care settings• Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children's and young people's settings.• Introductory awareness of sensory loss.

You'll also cover specific skills and knowledge for the options you choose. This may include:

• administering medication• supporting people with disabilities• working with babies and young children• helping people to eat and drink.

This level is suitable for:

• Healthcare assistants/Support workers• Care workers/Assistants/Key workers/Support workers• Personal assistants.

Level 3 QCF Diploma for Health and Social Care – 58 credits

There are two pathways available at level 3:

• Diploma in Health and Social Care (Children and Young People)• Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults).

Depending on the pathway chosen, learners will complete either nine (Adults) or fourteen (Children and Young People) core units from a range, among them:

• Promote equality and inclusion in health, social care or children's and young people's settings• Assessment and planning with children and young people• Promote person-centred approaches in health and social care.

Other topics will include:

• the role of a health and social care worker• health and safety• personal development.

The qualification also covers specific skills and knowledge for the options chosen. This may include:

• administering medication• supporting people with disabilities• working with babies and young children• helping people to eat and drink.

Level 5 QCF Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care – 80 - 90 credits

This level will suit people who are responsible for running a facility that provides services for vulnerable children, adults or both. They might be an assistant or deputy manager, or a manager who has not yet achieved a recognised vocational qualification at this level.

Learners will undertake one of the following six pathways:

• Children and Young People's Residential Management • Children and Young People's Management • Children and Young People's Advanced Practice • Adults' Residential Management • Adults' Management • Adults' Advanced Practice

All the pathways share five core units:

• Use and develop systems that promote communication• Promote professional development• Champion equality, diversity and inclusion• Develop health and safety and risk management policies, procedures and practices in health and social care or children and young people's settings• Working in partnership in health and social care, and children and young people's settings.

Depending on the pathway chosen, learners will complete a certain number of additional core units, as well as a range of optional units

Apprenticeships in Health and Social Care

Our Health and Social Care Apprenticeships provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed to work in a variety of health and social care settings. From helping people with a particular need to providing vital assistance to healthcare professionals in the care of patients.To gain the apprenticeship qualification, learners will need to show they have got a particular set of skills. They will work with their assessor to review current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by studying, or by trying new things at work..

Funding is available for these qualificationsAs well as completing a QCF Diploma described above learners will undertake a module on Employment Rights and Responsibilities and also undertake an Essential Skill qualification in numeracy, literacy and information technology. These can be at level 1 – 3 depending on the type of apprenticeship they are undertaking and their current skills.

Foundation Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care

Learners will gain a Level 2 QCF Diploma in Health and Social Care as well as a level 1, 2 or 3 in literacy, numeracy and basic computer skills.

Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care

Learners will gain a Level 3 QCF Diploma in Health and Social Care as well as a level 1, 2 or 3 in literacy, numeracy and basic computer skills.

This level is suitable for care workers, who have some responsibility in their workplace. They sometimes work without supervision. They may want to develop or demonstrate their skills, perhaps to become a senior care worker.

Job roles this level is suitable for:• Senior healthcare assistants/Support workers• Senior care workers/Assistants/Key workers/Support workers• Personal assistants.

Advanced Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care

Care Leadership and Management Apprenticeship provides learners with the knowledge and skills to manage in adult health and social care and children and young people settings.Learners will gain a Level 5 QCF Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care as well as a level 1, 2 or 3 in literacy, numeracy and basic computer skills.

Introduction to Social Care

This one day course gives people an introduction to social care and covers topics such as communication, attitudes, values, equality, health and safety and safeguarding

Legislation and compliance in Social Care

This one day course looks at what legislation is applicable in a Health and Social Care setting and what a carers and managers responsibilities are under this legislation. It covers topics such as health and safety, safeguarding, equality and diversity, human rights, confidentiality

Dementia Care

Currently 700,000 people in the UK have dementia and this figure is expected to double over the next few decades. The Awards in Awareness of Dementia/Certificates in Dementia Care will help to improve health and care services supporting individuals diagnosed with dementia. The qualifications in awareness of dementia and dementia care are aimed at occupational areas across all service user groups and ages, working in statutory (including NHS), private and voluntary agencies. This also includes healthcare/care assistants, support/key workers, family support workers and team leaders/first line supervisors.

Dementia Awareness

This one day course is suitable for people working with elderly people and wish to know more about dementia. It will give participants an understanding about signs of dementia, types of dementia and how best to support people who have dementia including communication skills.

Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia Care – 8 creditsThis qualification comprises of four mandatory units. These include:

• Dementia awareness• The person-centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia• Factors that can influence communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia

Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care – 18 creditsThe Certificate in Dementia Care covers:

• providing support for therapy sessions• positive risk taking• assistive technology• advocacy• models of disability.

Learners will be in a suitable work placement and will be assessed via a portfolio of evidence consisting of practical and documental evidence.

Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia - 11 creditsLearners will need to complete four mandatory units for the award. These include:

• Understand the process and experience of dementia• Enable rights and choices of individuals with dementia whilst minimising risks• Equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care practice.

Level 3 Certificate in Dementia Care – 21 creditsLearners will need to complete four mandatory units for the certificate including:

• Understand the process and experience of dementia• Enable rights and choices of individuals with dementia whilst minimising risks• Equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care practice.

In addition they will need to complete some optional units covering topics such as:

• Understand and meet the nutritional requirements of individuals with dementia• Contribute to support of positive risk-taking for individuals• Facilitate person-centred assessment, planning, implementation and review.

End of life Care

This suite of courses and qualifications aims to improve end of life care practice and establish a standard across all services.

These qualifications are for people working with those reaching the end of their lives. The learners taking these courses will be care assistants, support workers, healthcare assistants or supervisors.

Learners will learn about various aspects of end of life care including communication, managing discomfort and supporting individuals with loss

Having completed one of these qualifications, the learner may wish to complete a larger qualification such as the Diploma in Health & Social Care or to work towards one of the many small qualifications available for continuing professional development, such as the awards or certificates in dementia care. The qualifications are relevant to people working in health and health and social care settings where individuals who are supported are approaching the end of their life. This may include health, residential, domiciliary care and palliative care. The learners taking these qualifications could be care assistants, support workers or healthcare assistants.

Awareness of End of Life Care

This one day course will give an overview of how to support people at the end of their lives. It will cover principles of end of life and also briefly introduce participants to end of life care pathways

Level 2 Award in Awareness of End of Life Care – 3 creditsThis level 2 Award is comprised of only one unit. This is helpful as an introduction to the area and will give those that have little or no knowledge a basic understanding of end of life care.

The unit is • Understand how to work in end of life care

Level 3 Award in End of Life Care – 10 creditsThe Award is a knowledge-based qualification of three units. There are no pre-requisite qualifications needed to access it.

The units are:

• Understand how to work in end of life care • Principles of working in end of life care • Understand how to support individuals during last days of life

Level 3 Certificate in end of Life Care – 17 creditsThe level 3 Certificate is a competence-based qualification. It’s appropriate for care workers or a health support worker, who have some responsibility in the workplace.

The mandatory units include:

• Understand how to provide support when working in end of life care • Managing symptoms in end of life care • Understand advance care planning • Supporting individuals with loss and grief before death • Support individuals with specific communication needs

Children's Care, Learning and Development (CCLD)

These qualfications are designed for learners who want to develop a career as a childminder, youth worker, nursery nurse or nursery manager. You'll need to be working or volunteering in a child care role - but other than that, these qualifications are suitable for anyone starting their first child care job or already managing a child care centre.

The Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development cover a wide range of subjects, depending on your level and the options you choose. Topics include:

• Understanding child and young person development• Context and principles for early years provision -Promoting the well being and resilience of children and young people• Supporting children and young people to achieve their education potential.

These are work-based qualifications and you will be assessed whilst working with children, young people, their families and colleagues. You must be working in a real child care setting on a full time or part time basis and in paid or voluntary work.

Level 2 CCLD Award

This Qualification is suitable for people who work, or are about to work, as a nursery assistant, crèche worker or special educational needs assistant in a supporting role.

They should be working with children, under supervision.

The diploma is designed to guide you through the development of knowledge and skills relating to Children's Care, Learning and Development.

Level 3 CCLD Award

This qualification is suitable for people who work as a childminder, day care supervisor, SureStart worker or a community nursery nurse.

They may or may not have some supervisory responsibilities. They want to be in sole charge of children, for example managing a room in a nursery.

The diploma is designed to guide you through the development of knowledge and skills relating to Children's Care, Learning and Development at a supervisory level.

Introduction to Positive Behaviour Support

This half day course is suitable for anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of how to promote positive behaviour within a childcare setting. This course is suitable for foster carers, domiciliary carers, nursery workers or residential childrens support staff, respite care workers.

The course covers the following topics:

• Understanding how transitions affects children • Understanding how to promote positive behaviour• An overview of person centred planning and active support

Positive Behaviour Support

This one day course is for anyone who wishes to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required to promote positive behaviour within a childcare setting. This course is suitable for foster carers, domiciliary carers, nursery workers or residential childrens support staff, respite care workers

The course covers the following:

• How transitions affects children and how to support children experiencing transitions• How to promote positive behaviour including proactive and reactive strategies• Principles, processes and context of person centred thinking, planning and reviews

Certificate in Positive Behaviour Support19 credits

This course is for anyone who wishes to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required to promote positive behaviour within a childcare setting. This course is suitable for domiciliary carers, or residential childrens support staff, keyworkers, team leaders and managers of childrens services. Participants will need to be working with children and be actively promoting positive behaviour This course is accredited by City and Guilds. Participants will be expected to carry out work based assignments and be observed in the workplace. Participants will gain 19 credits (4 units) at level 3. These can be used towards a QCF Diploma in Health and Social Care

The course is a six month course comprising of 4 half day workshops, 1:1 tutorial and observation in the workplace

• Understanding of current legislation and frameworks relating to positive behaviour support, active support and person centred planning• Gain an understanding of the reasons why children challenge• Develop the skills to support children positively with challenging behaviour • Gain the skills, knowledge and understanding of how to support children in a person centred way• To understand how effective communication effects positive support and interactions• To understand how actively supporting children to be engaged in activities will promote positive behaviour

Level 2 Award in Supporting people with Learning Difficulties – 12 credits

The level 2 award includes one mandatory unit:

• Understand the context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities

In addition learners will need to undertake optional units from a variety of units

Level 2 Certificate in Supporting People with learning Disabilities – 21 Credits

The level 2 certificate includes three mandatory units

• Understand the context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities• Support person-centred thinking and planning• Introduction to communication in health , social care or childrens and young peoples settings.

As well as these learners need to complete optional units from a wide range of units such as:

• Purpose and principles of independent advocacy• Support individuals in their relationships• Enable individuals with behavioural difficulties to develop strategies to change their behaviour.

The units from these qualifications

These qualifications will help you to develop the knowledge and skills you need to support individuals with a learning disability.

The units offered within these qualifications are also available in the Health and Social Care Diploma so the credits will transfer to those qualifications if a learner goes onto do a full QCF diploma.These qualifications are aimed at those wishing to work or progress in care or healthcare roles such as care worker and healthcare assistant.

Health and Safety

Awareness of Equality and Diversity in the Workplace

This half day course is suitable as part of an induction programme or for people who wish to update their knowledge.. It is suitable for support workers and care assistants or for managers who wish to update their knowledge or as an introduction to the topic.

Topics covered on this course are legislation, equality in the workplace, equality in social care, recognising diversity, working in a way which respects equality and diversity

Equality and Diversity for Managers

This one day course introduces participants to equality and diversity legislation and looks at their responsibilities in implementing this as a manager.

Health and Safety Awareness

This one day course is suitable for people working in the Health and Social Care sector. It looks at all legislation relating to Health and Safety applicable to this sector. It also will cover responsibilities if employers and employees under the legislation. Topics covered include COSHH, manual handling, fire safety, environmental safety, health and safety at work, risk assessments.

Level 3 in Leadership and Management4 – 37 credits depending on qualification

This qualification is ideal if you are have management responsibilities but no formal training, and are serious about developing your abilities. It’s particularly suited to practising team leaders seeking to move up to the next level of management, and managers who need to lead people though organisational change, budget cuts or other pressures.

You can take this qualification as a concise award or a broader certificate or a comprehensive diploma.

The units fall into seven broad areas:

• Core management skills – organising and delegating• Ability to perform tasks – project management and leading a team• Team leadership – how to motivate and improve performance• Change and innovation – plan and manage change and create a culture for innovation• Communication skills• Managing people and relationships – negotiation and networking• Leadership – using action learning to develop capabilities

Level 2 Team Leading 13-36 credits depending on units chosen

This qualification is designed for new and aspiring team leaders – get an in-depth introduction to the role and its responsibilities. This is a nationally recognised qualification – the ideal launch pad for your management career.

Three mandatory unit cover the core skills you need to lead a team. You will learn how to plan, allocate and monitor work; tools and techniques to develop yourself as a leader; and how to get the most from your team. Optional units cover everything from communication skills to business improvement techniques. The choice includes units from the level 3 qualification to help you progress in your career and in formal professional training

Level 4 in Leadership and Management 5 – 36 credits depending on qualification

This qualification is designed for new and aspiring department heads, regional team leaders and other middle managers – really get to grips with the role, gain comprehensive business knowledge and develop the skills you need to lead at this level.

You can take this qualification as a concise award or a broader certificate or a comprehensive diploma.

The units fall into six broad areas:

• Working with people• Managing yourself and personal skills• Providing direction• Facilitating innovation and change• Achieving results• Using resources

Essential Skills Wales

This course aims to help learners demonstrate that they can apply skills in reading, writing, numeracy and digital literacy to real situations.

There are currently three essential skill areas - Communication, Application of Number and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

All Apprenticeship frameworks in Wales include Essential Skills qualifications.This course is aimed at anyone over 16 wanting to increase their skills in numeracy, reading, writing, speaking or digital literacy.

In Communication qualifications you'll cover:

• Speaking and listening• Reading• Writing.

In Application of Number qualifications you'll cover:

• Understanding numerical information• Carrying out calculations• Interpreting results and presenting your findings.

In Information and Communication Technology qualifications you'll cover:

• Using ICT systems• Finding, selecting and exchanging information• Developing and presenting information.

Customer Service Training

These qualifications cover levels appropriate for learners at any stage of a career in Customer Service, from those who are just starting out - handling customer queries - to those responsible for an organisation's overall customer-service strategy - analysing customer feedback and planning improvements.

Depending on which level you take, you'll cover areas such as:

• Communicate using customer service language• Follow the rules to deliver customer service• Maintain a positive and customer-friendly attitude• Deal with customers face to face• Do your job in a customer friendly way• Organise the delivery of reliable customer service.

Level 1 will suit you if you are new to customer service, and are looking to gain basic knowledge, understanding and experience of dealing with customers.

Level 2 will suit you if you have some experience in customer service and are able to handle more difficult customers. You are looking to improve your own skills and become more involved in making improvements to your team's level of customer service.

Level 3 you are able to respond to customer issues at a strategic level, suggesting improvements to customer service strategy and helping in their implementation.

Level 4 is ideal if you are responsible for developing and implementing customer-service strategies for your team, department or organisation. You're looking to develop the skills needed to manage and resolve challenging issues raised by customers.

Customer Service Training

Business Administration

The Level 2 and 3 Diplomas are hybrid qualifications, made up of competence and knowledge units, whilst the Level 4 QCF Diploma is competence based. These qualifications can be delivered on their own or as part of the appropriate apprenticeship in Business Administration. From learning to carry out basic administrative tasks to gaining higher level support skills, qualifications in Business Administration can be tailored to meet your or your employer's specific needs.

TAQA – Training Assessment and Quality Assurance

You will cover all the essential principles and practices of training assessment and quality assurance, including assessing competence and achievement.

You will learn in the work environment.

Assessment methods include observation, witness testimony, interview and discussion, oral and written questions, assignments, projects and case studies.

Business Administration

Level 2 will help you gain practical know-how in providing routine and more complex administrative support.

At Levels 3 and 4, you can build on your achievements to gain greater technical and managerial skills, as well as supervising others and contributing to the wider strategy of your organisation or department.

Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of AssessmentA knowledge-only Award for those who are starting their journey as an assessor, or those who need to know about assessment practice but are not currently practising.

Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work EnvironmentFor practitioners who assess the demonstration of competence in a work environment using the following assessment methods: observation/examining work products/oral questioning and discussion/use of witnesses/learner statements/Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related AchievementFor practitioners who assess knowledge and/or skills in vocationally related subject areas using the following assessment methods: assessments in simulated environments/skills tests/oral and written questions/assignments/projects/case studies/RPL.

Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational AchievementFor practitioners who may use ALL of the above-listed assessment methods based upon sound assessment principles.

Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and PracticeA knowledge-only Award for those starting their journey as internal quality assurance practitioners or those who need to know about internal quality assurance but are not carrying out quality assurance themselves.

Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and PracticeFor practitioners who conduct internal quality assurance of the assessment process from within a centre/organisation, by sample planning, monitoring and advising on the practice of assessors.

Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and PracticeFor practitioners who lead the internal quality assurance process within a centre/organisation and have responsibility for managing the quality of the assessment process, practice and the performance of assessors.
