IISER, Trivandrum kindled the students’ interest to opt for higher studies and
further take up research. The visit to the various laboratories in these institutes
enabled the students to gain in-depth knowledge about their field of interest,
helping them make the correct career choice in future.
2. The guest lectures by the subject experts on various topics have enriched the
knowledge of the faculty and students in many ways. Few of our students were
given an opportunity to pursue research under the invitees at various educational
and research institutions.
3. Some of our students are pursuing PG courses in reputed institutes like
Pondicherry University, Anna University, Bharathiar University, Bharathidasan
University, Mother Terasa University.
4. Skill development training on Mobile Servicing in Collaboration with New
Technology, Coimbatore enables the students to gain practical knowledge in field
of servicing.
5. The Visits of eminent professors from reputed institutes have inspired our students
to take part in the national level entrance exams for research. To our credit,
(i) P. Raj Preethi has been selected for her PhD programme at Amrita University.

14. Qualitative Improvements due to DBT Support (please highlight 5 salient lines)
Guest lecture on Smart Technology for Environmental Solution and Industrial visit
toUnifront Textiles - enabled the students to gain first-hand knowledge about heavy
metal removal and waste water treatment. This facilitated them to take up societal
based Group Projects on “Synthesis, Characterization and Screening of activated
Carbon/ Carbon doped Calcium alginate beads derived from Gallus gallusdomesticus
Beaks in the removal of toxic cation/anions of Battery Leachates”& “Parametric
examination and sorption studies of Textile and laundry effluents collected from
Tirupur and Coimbatore Districts”
i. Conferences, Guest lectures, Industrial visit and Workshops has motivated the students
to take an extra mile by focussing on research. The various activities would be a
stepping stone to get selected for summer research fellowship programme sponsored
by reputed research Institutes.
ii. Some of our students are pursuing PG courses in NIT, Bangalore, SRM University,
Anna University, Bharathiar University, NIT – Trichy, Bharathidhasan University,
Trichy, Kamaraj University, Madurai
Page 40
40
iii. Revised practical syllabi oriented the students to learn the identification of food
adulterants and enable them to provide solutions in a societal context.
Cheminformatics - computational chemistry will facilitate the students to deal with
the manipulation of chemical structures and comparison between structures.
iv. Funds from DBT Star College scheme facilitated the faculty members to participate in
multiple no of seminars and workshops, which enabled them to transfer the
knowledge gained in the latest developments in chemistry to student community.
v. Training Course on “Instrumental Methods of Analysis” in collaboration with
Scientific and Industrial Testing and Research Centre (Si’Tarc), Coimbatore has
helped the students to gain practical exposure in detection and estimation of various
elements like Nickel, Copper etc present in alloys. This will enhance job opportunities
in R & D and Analytical Labs.

14. Qualitative improvements due to DBT support
Please highlight (5 salient lines)
The DBT support has enhanced the admission of students. This was accompanied
with an increased demand ratio, and cut off mark for admission.
The DBT-STAR College Scheme reduced the drop out rate, boosted the pass
percentage and improved the percentage of marks obtained by the students.
The DBT support augmented infrastructure development in the Department thereby
enhancing the quality of the learning and teaching process to stimulate original
thinking through ‘hands–on’ exposure to experimental work and group projects.
Intensification of interdisciplinary approach among the science Departments and also
with nearby institutions for research projects, expert lectures, workshops, visits,
Training programmes and internship training increased.
Devising of standard curricula and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)/kits, e
contents and lab manuals for practicals to students and teachers was achieved under
the DBT-STAR College Scheme.
Community Oriented Service: The community programmes oriented the young
student mind towards service to the community.
15. Problems faced, if any, in implantation of the programme and utilization of DBT

Creation and maintenance of a highly productive study culture is our aim and in view of this, The
science departments organize academic programs round the year under DBT star college scheme. I wish to
thank the DBT for the financial support to build a free and open forum for basic sciences and research
culture among the student so as to develop a healthy relationship with the world of science. I also
appreciate the effectiveness of the scheme for improving the interdepartmental and intercollegiate
relationship in the conduct of activities.

OBJECTIVES
DBT's star college scheme transforms undergraduate science education
“Star College Scheme” has been initiated in the year 2008 by DBT to support colleges and university departments
offering undergraduate education to improve science teaching. The programme aims to improve the skills of teachers by
organising faculty training, improved curriculum and emphasis on practical training to students by providing access to
specialised infrastructure and consumables. Star college scheme has been divided in two categories viz. strengthening of support
for undergraduate education and Star college status. The support has strengthened physical infrastructure in laboratories, library,
teaching aids, and promoted networking with neighboring institutes. Hands-on training and projects of day to day relevance
have enhanced interest in students to pursue science courses at Undergraduate level.
• Improvement of curriculum with emphasis on practical training to students by providing access to specialised infrastructure
and consumables
• Scaling up ofthe skills of teachers by organising faculty training Programmes
• Opportunities to learn from stalwarts and visits to nearby institutes and universities are provided under the scheme
• The programme lays emphasis on inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary interactions
• Faculty improvement workshops in collaboration with British Council are being oarganised to train the trainers
• Higher enrolment in undergraduate science courses, increase in cut off percentage at time of admission, decline in
dropout rates, better pass percentage and higher enrollment in post graduate courses in science
• Students pursuing their Ph.D. program at ARCI Chennai, IIT , BITS - PILANI, Taiwan University, North Carolina University
• PG programme at Anna University, NIT Trichy, BITS PILANI, IIT, IISc, Amirta
• Student cleared NET, CSIR NET, SET Examinations
• SOPs, e-Contents prepared under DBT Star College Scheme
• Group projects – Patent, Publication and Extended to funded projects
• Cluster formation of Star Colleges and share of knowledge in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops
• Outcome based education (OBE)
