Progress has been made on all MDGs, except one
Progress has slowed down; only 1 MDG-target will be reached
Progress for people; regress for planet
MDG storyline
3 targets achieved 5 years before deadline
1. Extreme poverty2. Safe drinking water3. Slum upgrading
“They use statistics as drunken men use lamp posts – for support
rather than for illumination”Andrew Lang
Scottish poet(1844-1912)
“There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics”
Mark TwainAmerican author
(1835-1910)
SDGs1. UN Task Team2. Sectoral consultations3. H-L Panel on MDGs4. OWG on SDGs5. H-L Political Forum6. SDSN7. 10YFP
“Poverty eradication is the greatest global challenge facing the world
today and an indispensable requirement for sustainable
development”
First of 169 targets: by 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day
“Growing inequality is one of the biggest social, economic and political challenges of our time”
(2012)
(WEF)
“…societies are increasingly under pressure from economic, political and social developments including rising income inequality”
• In UK, carbon emissions of top 10% are 3 times greater per capita than those of bottom 10%
• Estimates do not include emissions caused by heating and maintaining second homes
• They are 8 times greater from car use; 9 times from international flights
• In India, top 1% pollute twice as much as rest of top 10%
Of all the competing ends we might pursue, addressing inequality must come first
High inequality = Bad inequality
It leads to unequal treatment of citizens and makes all other
goals so much harder to achieve
