be saved. That includes the quality Maple, Walnut, and Cherry species found throughout the park. Plans call for concrete walks for pedestrian access around the lake and through the park with secondary paths to give improved access to all areas of the park. There are to be interpretive signs along the walks and paths.

The good news for the Park District is the receipt of a $500,000 transportation grant to assist with the walkways.

In response to questions, Kaitlin indicated that there is an algae problem because of the high nutrient level of the water and that it creates a concern with toxicity for hose using the lake. Another problem that they are attempting to address is the large number of non-migratory geese that

inhabit the park. With each of the 80-90 adults depositing 2-5 pounds of waste each day, the effect is detrimental to water quality and to the enjoyment of the park. There is a program to manage the population that involves dipping eggs in oil so that they will not incubate.

Kaitlin noted another concern with the water quality. There is so much salt in the runoff from urban streets that the lake does not freeze and therefore ice skating is no longer possible.

Happy Thanksgiving. Program: Ron Wilcox introduced Caitlin Lill, Project Manager for the Urbana Park District. Kaitlin has a bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from

Beloit College and a master’s degree in Museum Studies from San Francisco State University. She is currently managing the planning and implementation of capital improvements for the Park District.

Kaitlin also serves as the Membership Chair with the Champaign County Audubon Society and as a strategic planner for the Champaign County History Museum.

Kaitlin indicated that the Park District has been doing a planning project for the lake in Crystal lake park for 1 1/2 years. There are three issues that are being addressed. The water quality has become unacceptable because of high phosphorus and nitrogen levels. There is also concern with mercury in the sediment. Secondly, there is concern with the shoreline habitat, and finally the need for improved accessibility and public recreation area.

The sediment basin that traps incoming sediment from

storm water drainage that feeds most of the water to the lake, needs to be dredged. It may be necessary to dredge the lake if the mercury levels found in tests of the sediment prove to be too high.

There is also a concern that the water pumped into the lake from the Glassford aquifer contributes to the high phosphorus levels. The water is needed at times to maintain lake levels when surface runoff is not adequate. The potential for using a wetland filter to remove phosphorus is being considered.

There are many unwanted species of trees and shrubs growing on the shoreline. Native species are desired, so a major removal of plant material is needed. There is a desire to have a much more open shoreline with sight lines that allow improved views of the lake.

The plan is to stabilize the shoreline with terracing and rock outcropping. The many desirable trees in the park and along the shore will
