PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE...

2

Greetings my brothers in the Rotary Club of Tacloban.

The vaccine is here! The 1st batch and priority sector has started their vaccination. Our front liners are starting to receive the armor they needed most against the deadly Covid 19.

We acknowledge the scarcity of the vaccine. With haste we produced a vaccine, a first in history. Unfortunately, there is fear amongst our people because of misinformation. Some would not consider being vaccinated because of the lack of knowledge on the importance of the vaccine.

We aim for herd immunity which means a 70% and up vaccination of our population. We will not achieve it if most of our people live in fear of vaccinations. Remember that our fight against Covid 19 is as the same as our priority fight in ending Polio.

As Rotarians, it falls upon us to help educate our people in the benefits of vaccination and help them understand that this is for greater good.

According to Rotarian Rylan Hyland (R.I. Journalist), Rotary clubs around the world are mobilizing in their communities to support the introduction and delivery of COVID-19 vaccinations. Rotary leaders are urging members to connect with their local health agencies to determine how Rotary can support COVID-19 vaccine efforts.

Rotary has decades of experience in supporting the distribution of polio vaccines as well as highlighting their power and efficacy, which is a critical reason why polio is on the brink of eradication. It’s this expertise, along with strategic partnerships and innovation, that Rotary members can tap into to protect communities from COVID-19.

I am confident that we will take the challenge and make the effort to this call to serve humanity.

God bless us all!

Rotarian Eugene A. TanTransforming President

Yours in Servant Leadership,

“The numerology number 18 resonates with humanitarianism, independence, and building something of lasting benefit. The numerology essence of the number 18 has to do with humanitarianism, independence, and building something of lasting benefit.” -affinitynumerology.com

Welcome to our 18th regular meeting on this 18th day of March. Considering the pandemic crises, we are on our right pace on the conduct of meetings. Though, risk is always there, our sacrifice and love for the organization is felt by your active physical attendance.

Last week, our Rotaractors celebrated their 53rd WORLD ROTARACT WEEK. World Rotaract Week is an annual celebration of the success and importance of Rotaract in communities around the world. Our very own Rotaract Club of Tacloban, together with the other Rotaract Clubs within Tacloban City, their celebration was put into meaning by conducting community outreach projects which were: 1) Distribution of Sanitary Health Kits in Barangay ’89 and 2) Mangrove Planting at Paraiso Mangrove Eco Learning Park, Marine and Wildlife Sanctuary. Both locations are in San Jose, Tacloban City and were conducted on March 13 & March 14, respectively. We extended our warm congratulations to them through their social media FB page on the success of their activities.

Through Rotaract clubs, young people ages 18 and older develop leadership and professional skills, exchange ideas with community leaders, and have fun through service.

So, number 18 is very relevant on this day. Besides, our Transforming President Eugene aimed 18 new members for our club. Lo and behold, the club already achieved that target. From 37 at the start of the Rotary Year, we are now 55 active Rotarians and soon to be 100% Paul Harris Fellows, again.

Let me go back to the numerology of 18.

18 is tolerant and compassionate, mixing easily with others, including planning and executing projects, yet tends to do the actions of what it considers the most important either by itself or as the leader — at its own determination.

It independently decides what its goals are and what to do to reach them — although the decisions are likely to be at least partially based on ideas and agreements arrived at during earlier consultation with others.

3

Yours in Rotary Service,Jocal

SEcRETARy’S MESSAGE...

When 18 makes a decision about its goals, 18 will either enlist the cooperation of others (and manage the project) or do the actions itself to accomplish its vision.

Maybe these are one of the reasons why girls are given grand birthday celebration when she reaches the age of 18 because of the characteristics indicated on its numerology.

A blessed to all of you, dear Rotarians.

ROTARy INFORMATION...PE Bobby Andrade

Trustee chair’s message for March 2021One year ago this month, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. As I write these words, the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc: taking lives, choking economies, and changing our societies in myriad ways. It has disproportionately hurt the poor and worsened inequalities.

Even as some countries have done better than others in controlling this deadly disease, the rapid development of vaccines is bringing us closer to the end of our strange new reality of social isolation.

This dark chapter in our history is also an opportunity for Rotary, because it reminds us of the impact we can have through The Rotary Foundation if we commit to helping others and live up to our highest ideals. It reminds us of the truly international spirit that we must embody to recover from this moment.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have witnessed compassion and sacrifice, friendship and resilient good humor. I am reminded of that famous insight popularized by John F. Kennedy: “When written in Chinese, the word crisis is composed of two characters: One represents danger, and one represents opportunity.”

Working together, we have done so much to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic, to care for our communities, and to seize the opportunity to be a part of perhaps the most complex task ever undertaken in history — vaccinating 7 billion people.

This does not mean we will deviate in any way from our avowed commitment to eradicating polio, which remains our highest priority and will continue to be our only corporate program.

On the contrary, while continuing polio vaccinations and surveillance, we can apply all our experience in fighting polio to counter COVID-19. We all have a part to play in combating the growing force of vaccine resistance and misinformation. Our advocacy in our communities will be critical — we need to spread the message about the power of vaccines to save lives. We need to work closely with governments and support them in the vaccination drive. We need to add to the more than 3,000 projects already registered on Rotary Showcase to raise awareness, deliver

critical personal protective equipment, and support frontline health workers.

As Aristotle said, human beings are social animals, and while COVID-19 has cruelly deprived us of our natural or habitual environment, it does not prevent us from finding connections and helping others in new ways. As you will see in the coming months, Rotary members are already finding the means to channel their humanitarian spirit through the Foundation, which is constantly adapting to address the world’s challenges. Every Rotarian has a role in this effort, and you will find that however you choose to help others and make lasting change, you are not alone.
