It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the fifteenth annual TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney Institute Achievement Awards. This is the Institute’s premier event of the year celebrating achievement and excellence in vocational education and training. Student and staff recognition is for 2008.

The Student Awards recognise outstanding achievement across a diverse range of learning areas. This recognition also demonstrates to industry and the broader community the Institute’s commitment to high quality and life changing experiences in education and training.

Tonight’s celebration also provides the opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary contribution of our staff who are always at the forefront of delivering responsive, relevant and effective training solutions. The success of our students is a testament to the commitment and professionalism of teaching and support staff.

I would also like to recognise the often unheralded role families and friends have played in the achievements of our students.

The professionalism and skill of our staff and the achievements of our graduates have consolidated the Institute’s reputation as the leading provider of vocational education and training in this country and internationally. We are proud to be recognised for industry responsiveness, quality delivery, customer service, flexibility and accessibility.

On behalf of South Western Sydney Institute, I congratulate the recipients of the 2008 TAFE NSW State Medal Awards, 2008 Institute Student Achievement Awards and the 2008 Staff Excellence Awards. I acknowledge the hard work you have put in and the high standards you have achieved. I would also like to thank you for your contribution to our Institute community. Grant HeeleyHead Teacher Engineering TradesGranville College

Grant has a “can do” attitude which is contagious. His leadership qualities are evident through his willingness to share, coach, mentor and encourage his team to achieve educational excellence in both mainstream and the commercial sector.

Grant has identified areas where staff could further their own training to better meet the needs of both students and industry. Grant’s leadership qualities have led his team to being an example of best practice in their field and working on a continuous improvement basis.

In addition, Grant also acts as a catalyst in bringing together industry experts and having them share their experience, insights and market knowledge with current students.

Excellence and Innovation in Leadership

David RobertsInstitute Aboriginal Development ManagerMiller College

David has put in an outstanding work effort throughout 2008. He has earned the respect and cooperation of faculty directors, head teachers and senior managers for his vision and outstanding results. David dramatically turned around indigenous student participation and outcomes from a record low in 2007 to a record high in 2008.

David’s communication, facilitation and negotiation skills underpin his leadership capabilities. David is instrumental in creating successful partnerships with TAFE, employers and the community leading to solid employment pathways for Aboriginal students.

Excellence and Innovation in Valuing Our People

Jim’s professionalism, determination and commitment to providing the highest standard of service to the Engineering Team underpins the success of the section.

Jim provides an essential service to both staff and students by providing access to essential tools and equipment. Jim has continued to develop his skills to stay on top of advancements in technology and so maintains his excellent service standards. He is the first to arrive and often the last to leave.

He is highly regarded as a valued member of the team and is an essential element to the delivery of educational excellence.

Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Learning

Tim DunnA/Head Teacher Automotive Light Vehicle MechanicsWetherill Park College

Tim has shown exceptional ongoing commitment and skill in the development of e-learning resources and a wiki site for the Light Automotive section at Wetherill Park College. The interactive student resource is currently available throughout TAFE NSW and supports the delivery of underpinning knowledge, inspection, service and repair procedures. Also included is a self assessment section where students can monitor their own progress.

Tim’s high quality dynamic resources provide extensive support to both teachers and students, resulting in enhanced learning and improved results.

Institute “Through Care Program” TeamBankstown College

Nina Walker • Institute and Juvenile Correctional Liaison OfficerKaren Davies • Aboriginal Education Coordinator

Nina and Karen were the first to respond to the newly released TAFE Aboriginal Offenders Action Plan by developing an initiative that created a pathway for inmates to plan and manage their release from prison.

Participants in the program were keen to be involved and gained increased knowledge, skills and most importantly confidence. Nina and Karen employed initiative and sensitivity to the planning and implementation of this program and built strong relationships between the key government organisations and local community.

The program has been so successful that the processes developed by Nina and Karen have been recommended for use by other Institutes.

The Institute Workforce Capability and Development Unit has been committed to continuous improvement and innovation in 2008. A significant achievement has been the implementation of an online application system.

The Unit helped make this transition a smooth one for staff while continuing to provide access, high level customer service and support to all learning and development activities.

All members of the Unit worked cohesively as a team to achieve the most positive outcomes for the Institute, earning the reputation of being a quality service provider.

The ESOL Interpreting Team at Granville College has contributed in a distinctive way to improving the situation of Sudanese immigrants by helping them to improve their language and interpreting skills.

When there were no resources available, the team adopted a flexible approach that has become a benchmark in their field. Several of the students in the program are continuing with their vocational studies in Nursing, Community Welfare, Aged Care, Education and are well on their way to becoming skilled bilingual professionals.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNERS

Vocational School Student of the Year

Shayley VennCertificate II in Tourism (Operations)Campbelltown CollegeShayley is completing her HSC and second year of TVET Tourism. A well-

rounded student, she excels academically - gaining distinctions in all TVET units in 2008 - and puts 120 percent into everything she does. Shayley is school and sporting house captain at Wollondilly Anglican College, has organised Bushfire Appeal fundraisers, represented her school at Parliament House and volunteers at Picton Show and Rodeo. Originally Shayley was interested in dentistry but her TVET course changed her mind! Through TVET she got on-the-job experience: with work placements at Wollondilly Visitor Information Centre and Belgenny Farm. Shayley plans to go to university to study business/tourism and to pursue a career in hotel management.

“What is most valuable is the practical skills and hands-on experience I’m gaining through TVET. I thoroughly enjoy our assessments - things like planning a product launch to market a theme park in the Campbelltown region. My understanding of the tourism industry has expanded immensely and will definitely be helpful in my future career”.

Commercial/TAFE PLUS Student of the Year

Kevin WhiteAdvanced Diploma of Hospitality ManagementPadstow CollegeKevin achieved a distinction average

while studying flexibly at TAFE and working full time as HR Manager at Club Marconi. He is active in local sport and volunteer pursuits including the Rural Fire Service and Rotary Club of Wetherill Park where he received a Pride of Workmanship Award. He was shortlisted as a Young Achiever finalist for Club of the Year Awards (Clubs NSW) and his employer describes him as a ‘vibrant HR Manager whose dedication and passion for service excellence is infectious’. Kevin is now upgrading his training and assessment qualifications to assist people embarking on a hospitality career.

“I thank my TAFE teacher Janine Loves for my success - students are only as good as their teacher! My Advanced Diploma has greatly expanded my effectiveness within the business, my confidence in performing my role - and encouraged me to ‘move out of the box’. I gained valuable business acumen and a better understanding of how our business operates”.

Apprentice of the YearTAFE NSW State Medal

Aaron SamphierCertificate III in Automotive Vehicle Body (Panel Beating)Campbelltown CollegeAaron will represent Australia at

the International WorldSkills Competition in Calgary, Canada this year. Now a qualified panel beater, Aaron is also recognised by the local business community, being nominated as Campbelltown Rotary Apprentice of the Year. He is a volunteer member of NRMA Smash Repair Team, repairing damaged race cars at Eastern Creek, Oran Park and Bathurst. Aaron won a Minister’s Scholarship for being a gold medal winner in the Australian WorldSkills Competition and will use his scholarship to study Business at TAFE, which will further his ambition to start his own business. He enjoys basketball, go-karting and karate where he is aiming for a black belt.

“TAFE gave me the confidence and skill to succeed in my trade and get to where I am now. Representing my College, Institute, workplace and my country in the International WorldSkills Competition is my proudest achievement. My motivation is to be the best I can be at anything I set my mind to and help people around me to achieve their goals”.

Trainee of the Year

Gabrielle PryorCertificate III in Business AdministrationBankstown CollegeGabrielle was an outstanding trainee, with her employer calling her an asset

to the business, readily able to apply her skills learnt at TAFE to the workplace. Gabrielle has now moved on to further study, doing her Diploma of Business Administration. She fast-tracked her training, completing Certificate IV subjects while still doing her traineeship. Gabrielle always strives to do well in her studies and was also a winner of a South Western Sydney VET Award.

“TAFE taught me everything I needed to do my job well - Microsoft Office skills, communication and how a business works; and all the skills and knowledge I need to be the best I can. My TAFE training has been extremely valuable - my qualification will take me a long way in my career as studies show that people with a TAFE qualification are more likely to get a job than those who don’t. I can’t wait to get out into the world to see what I can do next”!

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year

Nicole HintonCertificate IV in Training and AssessmentWetherill Park CollegeNicole’s training at both university

and TAFE opened her eyes to the importance of an accessible and relevant vocational education to the Indigenous community - and gave her the confidence to take on her current teaching role at TAFE. Nicole works closely with the local Aboriginal community to develop culturally relevant programs. She is a mentor to Aboriginal students, an Indigenous community leader in the local area, on the board of the Tharawal Local Aboriginal Land Council and a strong advocator for TAFE being the primary vocational educator for her community.

“Since undertaking training at TAFE myself, my communication and facilitation skills have increased and I am more confident. I have become a strong fighter representing my community undertaking study at TAFE, and will continue to improve my skills by undertaking more professional development training. My TAFE training has also assisted me with my university study and I now plan to study at a Masters level”.

Automotive, Aeroskills, Transport and Logistics Award

George StelliosCertificate III in Automotive TechnologyWetherill Park CollegeGeorge is a passionate and motivated

motor mechanic who loves a good challenge. Having completed his trade course, George is now doing his heavy vehicle certificate at TAFE, after which he is keen to do further training at a post-trade level. George also enjoys restoring old Australian muscle cars and in future aims to run his own successful workshop.

“I believe everyone is born to be someone, to do something with their life - and I was born to be a motor mechanic! I am passionate about my industry, and so are the teaching staff at TAFE. The teachers give us, their students, a wealth of their knowledge and experience. I strongly believe South Western Sydney Institute is the best place to learn automotive trades and the standard of teaching is grade ‘A’. I thank TAFE for giving me the opportunity to continue in the trade that I’m passionate about”.

International Student of the Year

Thanh Minh (Peter) DoanDiploma of Children’s ServicesBankstown CollegeIn just two years, Peter has completed his Diploma while mastering the

English language, working long hours and doing volunteer work for the Salvation Army and RPA Hospital. Despite his schedule, Peter graduated with outstanding grades and gained work at Moore Park Children’s Early Learning Centre. He is also at university, studying Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and will finish his degree next year due to articulation from TAFE. Peter’s future plans are to be a childcare centre Director and study for his Masters in Education. His other passion is music - he is the conductor for the local Vietnamese Youth Catholic Choir.

“The knowledge I’ve gained at TAFE is useful now at work and has made me very confident in my future career and further study. I can look forward to a great career. Not only has my hard work paid off but through TAFE I met some great people and gained some of the greatest rewards of my life”.

Institute Student Associations’ Student of the Year

Ryan CorfieldCertificate IV in Information Technology (Website Design)Campbelltown CollegeRyan is an active board member of

Campbelltown TAFE Student Association with a keen interest in all things IT and motorsport. His Student Association colleagues describe him as optimistic, inspiring and prepared to go the extra mile to achieve his goals. He has secured employment in his field and also started his own web design business. Ryan has combined his IT and motorsport interests to build websites for many leading racing teams, including some of Australia’s most successful. He is active in drag and sprint car racing locally, having worked with Western Sydney International Dragway.

“I am thrilled to win this award and was particularly motivated by this TAFE course. I can now work at an advanced level with software such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Flash; the technology packages at the forefront of Web Development. As well as increasing my skill level the course has helped me keep abreast of new developments in my vocation and improved my personal abilities”.

Community, Health and Personal Services Award

Suzanne CharroufCertificate II in HairdressingBankstown CollegeSuzanne completed TVET Hairdressing at school then Certificate II in

Hairdressing, a pre-employment course which gave her the confidence and skills to land her current apprenticeship. Suzanne is headed for success, striving to keep abreast of new trends and taking part in industry competitions such as the IHS Challenge. She plans ongoing professional development through TAFE, including her Diploma of Salon Management: to help her achieve her dream of owning her own salon. She has a passion to teach and eventually would like to train TAFE students.

“Hairdressing is an outlet for my creativity, I love fashion and love people! Doing TVET at school made me realise hairdressing was for me - then my pre-employment course gave me the skills to get the job. They asked if I had experience - I could confidently say ‘yes’ because of my practical experience at TAFE. I thank my TAFE teachers who gave me so much valuable advice, skills, knowledge and encouragement - dreams do come true”!

Employment Preparation Award

Prince UnuafeCertificate IV in English for Academic PurposesGranville CollegePrince’s inspiring journey has taken

him from Nigeria to establishing himself in Sydney, where he is an active member of the Australian-Nigerian community and on his way to his goal of becoming a police officer. His belief in service to humanity has seen him work in community health in Nigeria and at two Sydney nursing agencies. Prince’s teachers praise his diligence, humility, respect, leadership, intelligence and ability to motivate others. He plans to do a Diploma in Policing Practices at CSU then upgrade his qualification to become a detective/prosecutor.

“This course prepared me for further learning and the police force. My English language skills have improved out of sight. The credit goes to our teachers for their selfless sacrifices and input, giving us a quality education that guarantees success and a secure future. It is our choices that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities. If you think you can, you can; and if you think you can’t, you’re right”.

Building and Construction Award

Hai Duc NguyenDiploma of Building StudiesGranville CollegeCompleting his Diploma and achieving the outstanding results he did allowed

Hai Duc to gain a place at University of Sydney, where he is now studying Civil engineering (Construction Management). He also gained admission into UTS to study a Graduate Certificate in Project Management. He then plans to do his Masters in Construction Management and work as a project manager for a top-tier building company. Hai Duc achieved an outstanding distinction average while maintaining his own business, a noteworthy accomplishment.

Jacquiline PhamAdvanced Diploma of Financial ServicesBankstown CollegeJacquiline is a fantastic ambassador for the banking industry and for TAFE.

Leaving school at 16 and being a young single parent, her dream was to work in banking, however she thought it was out of reach until she made the phone call to TAFE that changed her future. Jacquiline fast-tracked her training to complete four courses in just over one year: Financial Services (Certificate III), Bookkeeping, Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Financial Services. She has now gained a position with one of Australia’s major banks. Jacquiline’s future plans include working in a relationship management role in business banking and further studies at Macquarie University.

“I speak from the heart when I say TAFE changed my life. I came from a financially strapped family and wanted more for myself and my daughter. TAFE gave me the opportunity to fulfil my dream. Winning this award completes my journey of inspiration, to find success where little was expected. Tourism, Hospitality, Primary Industry and Arts Award

Janice De OliveiraDiploma of Events ManagementBankstown CollegeEvents coincided with Janice’s personal goals of meeting new people and

having a creative outlet; and she also wanted to address the cultural needs of her local Portuguese community. Through her Diploma Janice gained extensive hands-on event experience, of which she says the highlights were volunteering as Crowd Marshall Team Leader for World Youth Day and the unique work she has done with her Portuguese community. Janice achieved 30 distinction grades during her one year Diploma and was a finalist in the 2008 Meetings and Events Australia Scholarship. A dual qualification is very sought after in the industry so Janice is now doing her Diploma of Tourism. She plans to start her own events company.

“I am completely confident in launching my career in the events and tourism industry with my TAFE training behind me. The Diploma together with the support of my teachers at Bankstown College has provided me with the skills, knowledge and confidence to achieve my career goals”.

Vocational Access Award

Anthony TuongCertificate III in Higher School StudiesBankstown CollegeAnthony achieved outstanding results in all his subjects, culminating in a UAI

of 99+ allowing him to matriculate into combined Law at the University of Sydney. This was a truly outstanding result: one of the highest grades ever seen at Bankstown College. Anthony’s motivation and effort was unsurpassed. Before commencing his HSC, Anthony was on the semi-professional tennis circuit and played junior Davis Cup for Australia. He says receiving this award came as a surprise and he is flattered and truly humbled by this recognition.

“Attending Bankstown College gave me the opportunity to achieve a UAI in which many future career options are made available to me. It enabled me to study law which I have chosen because it is a career where I can use my position to be of assistance to the community, to society and particularly the less fortunate”.

Jaime came into the course as an adult apprentice with ten years since his last experience with formal study, and excelled with close to 100% distinction average in his results. He now looks forward to completing his apprenticeship with Integral Energy this year to be a qualified tradesman. He is already undertaking professional development through post-trade training at TAFE, doing his Diploma of Electrical Engineering; which will allow him to move into more technical and senior roles at work.

“The trade course has laid the foundation for the remainder of my working life. Without TAFE and the effort my teachers put in, I would not have been able to achieve this success, or developed such a great appreciation of the trade. TAFE assisted me in achieving an education well beyond what I thought I was capable of. I am evidence that if a person is committed, with the support of TAFE you can do anything you set out to achieve”.

John MansfieldDiploma of Information Technology (Systems Administration)Cambelltown CollegeHalfway through his course John

obtained a full-time position in the industry and yet continued to achieve a Distinction average, showing great dedication and commitment to his studies and career. John continues to work in his IT role at Paul Wakeling Motor Group, servicing 200 staff at five separate locations; and also does additional IT work for the retail sector. He says his interest in IT is constantly growing and plans to undertake his Diploma in IT (Web Development). In the future John aims to move into the networking sector of the IT industry and from there into project management.

“I wouldn’t be where I am now without TAFE. The course gave me the knowledge, skills, practical know-how and confidence to get full-time employment in the industry. I’m very happy to receive this award as it recognises the hard work, dedication and determination I put into my studies”.
