A200.01 Building Area: (sf) 42,000 sf Cost per Square Foot: $152 sf Construction Cost $6,400,000 Date of Completion: December 2012 Program Summary: New Museum facility with Exhibit Halls, Theater, Exhibit Storage and Restoration Shops, Offices, Conference Facilities, Library / Archives and a central Courtyard / Gathering Space. Program Statement: Fitting into the traditional architectural fabric of the campus surrounding it, the museum complex fronts the street with a wide, gracious , grand colonnade which the visitor filters through reaching a triumphal brick arched entry. The visitor enters through the arch into a traditional Louisiana courtyard with an exhibit hall and theater flanking it on either side. Both theater and exhibit hall face onto the courtyard with sweeping, open glass walls that allow the spaces to flow visually and programmatically into the composed outdoor room of the courtyard. The faces of the theater and the exhibit hall suddenly break open and away from the traditional architectural language of the exterior of the complex with tilting curtain walls and twisting metal panel soffits that draw the visitor to the entries at the courtyard corners to either the theater or the exhibit hall. The two story exhibit hall begins with a first level that is dark with a low ceiling, brick floors and walls and wood ceilings imitating the materials and atmosphere of the entry level in Greek Revival buildings. Once ascending a muscular concrete and steel stair, however, the visitor arrives at the upper exhibit area which is a soaring, light airy space that is provided with even, northern daylighting through a series of sawtooth clerestories. The third side of the courtyard is flanked by a two story wing with a balcony that houses conference facilities and a library on the second floor.
