For nearly a decade, Americans and Afghans have been joined by conflict. In the first years of the war, images of Afghan girls returning to the classroom were a heartening change from the years of Taliban brutality. Engaging the women of Afghanistan is critical to shaping a modern, democratic Afghanistan. Yet local laws have again become more conservative. And strong development benchmarks for women have waned. Now, with talk of possible reconciliation with the Taliban, some wonder: do wom-en’s rights in Afghanistan still matter?
Audiences in Washington D.C. and Kabul discuss how women’s lives have changed post-Taliban rule and ask if their rights and interests are now being sacrificed in the name of security.
America Abroad: “Joined by War: Women’s Rights in Today’s Afghani-stan” airs Sunday, June 26 at 10 p.m. on AM 1370/FM-HD91.5-2
Joined by War: Women’s Rights in Today’s Afghanistan
1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 SpecialsState of the Re:Union with Al Letson: Oakland, CA airs Sunday, June 5 at 10 p.m. Refugees, swindlers, visionaries, and entrepreneurs chasing fast money -- these are the historic roots of Oakland, California. The city has long been home for people building new lives and imagining even better ones. But dreams that have been deferred also haunt this place, in its empty post-boom skyscrapers, its infamous homicide rates, and deep budget cuts. In the face of entrenched problems, Oakland answers back with diverse, revolutionary solutions. In this episode, StateoftheRe:Union looks at the costs and rewards for people dreaming big in Oakland.
Intelligence Squared U.S.: “Should America stop accepting the poor, the tired, the huddled masses?” airs Sunday, June 12 at 10 p.m.America, built up by the hard work of its immigrants, now finds itself home to an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants. The federal government, even under the reform-friendly tenure of President George W. Bush, has been unable to find the consensus to overhaul our country’s immigration laws. Both the
Dream Act and an Arizona statute requiring police officers to detain anyone they suspect to be illegal, has brought the debate back to the forefront of national politics. Are immigrants taking American jobs, or, does immigration help our economy? And is there any difference between low-skilled and highly-skilled immigrants and is it time to honor this distinction? Moderator: John Donvan, Speaking for the motion: Tom Tancredo, Kris Kobach, and Speaking against the motion: Julian Castro, Tamar Jacoby.
Intelligence Squared U.S.: “Can clean energy drive America’s economic recovery?” airs Sunday, June 19 at 10 p.m. To drag our economy out of the biggest crisis since the Great Depression, America needs another moon shot. Can the investment of billions into the clean energy sector trigger the creation of millions of jobs and innovation? Or would we simply be pumping dollars into the myth of a green economy? Moderator: John Donvan, Speaking for the motion: Bill Ritter, Dan Reicher, and Speaking against the motion: Robert Bryce, Steven Hayward.
