MSETM General Policies
Like many other professionals, personal and career goals led me to
further my education. This program has given me opportunities in my
career that I would not have otherwise. The faculty and staff at WKU were

Admission
Two types of admission:

Program Admission Requirements
Coursework
All courses are offered both face-to-face
and online every semester.
Online courses are eight weeks (bi-term)
Face-to-face courses are 15 weeks (full
semester)
Time commitment varies by course, but
plan to commit at least 6-10 hours per
week per course.
Coursework
Full time load: 9 credit hours per semester
Maximum load: 15 credit hours
(GAs can only take 12 hours maximum)
The maximum time allowed to complete the degree: six years
An overall GPA of 3.0 minimum is required to graduate.
Repeating a Course
A course in which a grade of D or F is
received must be repeated if the course is
used in meeting degree requirements.
When the course is repeated, the course
credit(s) will only count once. The second
grade is used in calculating the GPA.

If a student does not enroll in the semester for
which they initially applied or have not enrolled in
more than three semesters, a Status Update Form
is required. This form may be downloaded from
the Office of Graduate Studies website.
Required Forms
Form C: Submit in the first semester or as soon as in
Good Standing
Form G: Submit as soon as thesis committee and
topic is selected. Must be completed before
registering for AMS 599
Proposal Approval Form (MSETM-PA)

Oral Defense: Form E
A Change Course Form is required if you want to take a
course that is not on your Form C

Thesis (AMS 599) Writing Guide
The Thesis
The thesis generally requires more than one
semester. Don’t wait until your last semester to
begin.
A thesis can be many things…
survey research, experimental design, project,
business plan, etc.
The output a comprehensive paper that typically
includes an introduction, review of literature,
methodology, findings/results, and conclusion
The Thesis
Talk to as many faculty members as possible when
choosing a thesis committee. Choose wisely.
The thesis committee chair will be your primary
resource.
Discuss thesis topic ideas early. Read as much as you
can about potential topics.
Be prepared to write a comprehensive thesis proposal.
Be aware of deadlines for defending and submitting
your thesis
Thesis Hours
Thesis hours (6) AMS 599 may be taken at any time after successful completion of AMS 571 Research Methods
Thesis hours may be split into multiple semesters
Work with your thesis chair to schedule thesis hours (AMS 599)
When you first register for AMS 599, completion of the Certified Technology Manager (CTM) exam is required
Matriculation
If the thesis is not complete and all other course
work is finished, you must continue to be enrolled
until the thesis has been submitted and approved.
To maintain matriculation, you must register during
any fall or spring semester in which you will be
actively working on the thesis.
Enroll in AMS 600 Matriculation for one credit hour.
The course does not result in a grade or credit.
Graduate Assistantships
The department may offer Graduate Assistantships (GA) to qualified
graduate students
Graduate appointments are typically 20 hours per week
GAs must carry at least 9 credit hours per semester with a 3.0 GPA
minimum.
They may perform a variety of duties as assigned including research,
teaching, laboratory supervision, curriculum and course development,
special projects, or departmental service.
Tuition and stipends are negotiated with the department.
Students wishing to apply should complete a Graduate Assistantship
Application, submit a resume, and three letters of reference to the
department.
Tips for Success
Find someone whom you respect and trust.
Someone you can talk to. It can be a
faculty member, graduate assistant, or a
senior graduate student.
Problems of one sort or another will arise
during your graduate career. Talk to your
advisor, other graduate students, trusted
faculty, early.
