Dear Girl Scouts, Family, and Friends,My name is Jamie, and I am a Girl Scout! Nationally, we are proud to be celebrating our 100th Anniversary. At Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa, we are committed to enhancing a girl’s leadership experience at every grade level. Our programs and activities are relevant, unique, exciting, and applicable - in a safe all-girl environment. We are here to ensure that girls succeed. Because when girls succeed, so does society.

This book hosts diverse and flexible ways for girls to choose how, when, and how much they want to get involved. We’ve divided it into multiple sections - you’ll find programs for one-time themed events, camp activities, travel, and a page for volunteers. You’ll also find calendar pages in the middle of this book to assist you in planning.

We are doing so much locally for girls in our area, and to further honor our 100th Anniversary, we have nationally launched a bold campaign simply called ToGetHerThere. We have a long-term goal that is ambitious and urgent: to create balanced leadership in one generation.

We know the programs that we offer girls infuse lifelong values of courage, confidence, and character. Girl Scouts offers programming that can’t be found anywhere else and we’re asking everyone to engage in our campaign for girls.

— mothers, fathers, corporations, governments, and nonprofits — we’re asking you to help girls reach their leadership potential and place this urgent issue front and center on the national agenda.

we’re asking you to step forward and “own” your future. To create waves, to speak up, to reach your potential - whatever and wherever that may be. By trusting in our century-old movement, encapsulated in the Girl Scout Promise and Law, you are becoming our future leaders and making a significant difference. The best part is you will also have a great time along the way!

We hope that you find opportunities in this book that suit your interests. In these pages, you can also submit your ideas for programs and activities - we’d love to hear from you with your comments, ideas, and suggestions. You can use the enclosed form or simply email us at [email protected].

Girl Scouts is important.

We firmly believe that we can do better for our girls and for ourselves. And only Girl Scouts, with its scale and time-honored place in society, can launch an initiative like ToGetHerThere. If not us, who? If not now, when? We know that we can’t transform American leadership in a year, but we can transform expectations in a year. We can transform awareness in a year. We all have a role to play in helping girls achieve their full leadership potential. Learn more and get involved in the advocacy campaign at togetherthere.org and through our website at girlscoutsiowa.org.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Jamie Boersma, CEO

Our Last 100 Years...

1910sOn march 12, 1912, 18 girls gathered together in savannah, Georgia for the first Girl scout meeting, led by a woman named juliette Gordon

Low who had an idea…and a vision for girls in america.

1920sOne of the earliest troops was organized in Iowa in 1922 at the south side Community House in Des moines.

1930sthe first cookie sale in Iowa took place in February of 1936. the cookies were baked by the stark bakery, which eventually became barbara’s bake shop. the cookies were wrapped in yellow cellophane and sold for 15 cents per dozen. 73,200 cookies were sold that first year!

1940s It was during this decade, Girl scouts in Iowa and throughout the nation truly focused their efforts on the war. they collected 1.5 million articles of clothing that were then shipped overseas to children and adult victims of war.

1970sthe 70s marked a period of reinvention and re-definition for Girl scouting. One of the most significant changes came with the uniform re-design. Girl scouts of the 70s were the first to enjoy the freedom of a pantsuit uniform!

Page 9: Program Book Sept 2012 - Jan 2013

9

1990sGirls plunged into sports and fitness in the

90s. Locally, golf workshops attracted a lot of girls and in 1998 the Moingona

and Lakota Girl Scout Councils hosted “Spokes and Strokes.” 46 girls and 10 adults biked around the council’s jurisdictions for two days as part of

the unique sporting event.

2000sWe started using new

social media channels online. A new cookie program strategy was

implemented. We made the largest branding and badge overhaul in 25 years. We

acquired new leadership. 2012 famously ushered in the 100-year Anniversary of Girl Scouts!

BE THERE SO SHE CAN BE

HERE

Build a better tomorrow by investing in a girl today.

When girls succeed, so does society.

Our Next 100 Years...

1980sTechnology exploded during this era and troop leaders started taking advantage of online training tools.

Have you ever felt excluded, been talked about, or been cyber-bullied? Unfortunately, every girl has experienced some sort of bullying (relational aggression) either as the bully, the target, or the bystander. During this event, you will be taught how to identify bullying behaviors, practice standing up to bullies, and explore ways to prevent bullying in your community. You’ll be able to ask questions about real life situations and learn about what it takes to be a good friend. Upon completion, you will be prepared to positively intervene when confronted with bullying antics.

relational aggression is the systematic diminishment of a person’s sense of self-worth through exclusion, shunning, and gossip. It’s incredibly common among girls of all ages, but you can learn to prevent it and to intervene when you see any bullying happen around you. Doing nothing? not an option! power up!

power up events will be held throughout the entire Council. If you’d like to see a workshop held in your area, please contact your local Leadership Center and ask to speak to a program manager. Watch our website for details at girlscoutsiowa.org.

I want to go... how do I pay for my trip?

We hope that you can participate in as many adventures as you desire! The council provides some fantastic opportunities to start the money earning/saving process:

• Participate in the Fall and Cookie Product Programs (see the product program flier on page 49 for dates).

• If you sign up for a trip before September 30, you can “bank” your cookie dough to save for that trip. All you have to do is let us know that you would like to use your cookie dough this way (and bonus if you earned it).

• Apply for a grant through our Trip Financial Assistance

form (found in the forms section of our website at www.girlscoutsiowa.org).

• Troop Money-Earning Opportunities (led by girls attending; specific for troop travel opportunities).

No one should expect to pay for an entire trip solely with money-earning opportunities or Product Program money earned. Even with those programs, some out-of-pocket expenses will be necessary. Through these programs, however, we hope to allow you the chance to begin the process of taking the trip(s) of a lifetime!

not interested in joining a troop, but still want to enjoy

the Girl Scout Leadership experience?

You can join our program as a Juliette!

Girl scoutingcustom made for you!

Juliettes are busy, independent, self confident girls who want to be a part of something larger – Girl Scouts! Make your Girl Scouting experience custom fit your interests!

• The Juliette program is a great way for girls who don’t have time for troop specific activities to participate in other council programs.

• It’s a great way to continue your future in Girl Scouts when your troop no longer meets, or if there isn’t a troop that is right for you in your town.

• Some of our Juliettes belonged to Girl Scouts as younger girls and are now looking for a new way to stay connected while not making a year long commitment to a group.

GoldSilver

Bronze Awards

The Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, focuses on the interests and personal journey towards leadership skills and service for girls in 9th – 12th grade. By earning the Girl Scout Gold Award you will be joining the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference both locally and globally. The Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouts and therefore is a commitment you make and complete as an individual.

Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award starts with completing two Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador journeys, or having earned the Silver Award and completing one Senior or Ambassador journey. Each journey you complete gives you the skills you need to plan and implement your Take Action project. After you have fulfilled the journey(s) requirement, 80 hours is the suggested minimum for the steps necessary to achieve your goal.

This prestigious award is a plus when applying to colleges and financial scholarships as many opportunities await girls who are Gold Award Receipients. A Girl Scout who has earned her Gold Award automatically rises one rank in any of the U.S. military branches.

The Bronze Award is a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl scout junior can achieve. you can complete the project as an individual or on a team. During the project, you’ll develop more confidence, meet new people, and have the kind of fun that happens when you work with other Girl scouts to make a difference.

Girl scouts can earn the bronze award as a registered member in 4th or 5th grade (or equivalent). Girls must complete an age-level/junior national Leadership journey, and then create a take action project based on their observations of a local issue. not all projects will require the same length of time to complete from planning, to sharing, to celebration. to earn this award, you should expect to include the time it takes to complete a Girl scout junior journey and a suggested minimum of 20 hours to build your team, explore your community, choose and plan your project, put your plan in motion, and spread the word to educate and inspire others.

The Silver Award symbolizes a Cadette’s accomplishments in Girl scouting and is the highest honor a girl in 6th-8th grade can earn. Going for the Girl scout silver award gives you the chance to show that you are a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving your community.

to fulfill the requirements for this award, you will need to complete a Cadette national Leadership journey and create a take action project that improves your neighborhood or local community. after girls complete the Cadette journey, the suggested minimum time for earning their Girl scout silver award is 50 hours. you can earn the award by focusing on an issue that you care about; building a team to support that issue; exploring your community; picking, planning, and putting your take action project into action; demonstrating an understanding of sustainability and the wider world; and sharing what you have learned with others.

Girl Scout volunteers use unique talents to bring about change—for girls, and in turn, for society.

Become a Girl Scout volunteer and be part of a movement of nearly one million other volunteers helping girls make a lasting impact on the world.

Your interests and life experiences make you the perfect person to be a new kind of role model for girls, someone who creates a safe environment where girls work together and every girl feels free to work toward her highest aspirations.

As a role model for girls, you’ll help prime each and every Girl Scout you serve for the day when she’ll lead—however she chooses—be it in her family, school, workplace, community, nation, or the world.

There are endless, fl exible ways to participate as a volunteer. You can work directly with girls or indirectly by supporting the adults who do. Help girls reach their full potential.
