NUANSA MANDIRI PROJECT

A. Background

Nuansa Mandiri (‘Degree of Independence’) consisting of women who organize themselves with the goal of empowering women not just financially, but also with knowledge and life skills that will equip them to be independent. The project members are housewives and traditional market traders who focus on cooperative micro finance activities such as savings and loans. With the collaboration of PKBI- mother organization of IIWC, this cooperative provides reproductive health information and services as well as the distribution of short-term family planning methods. The informal ‘ice-breaking’ approach usually starts out with casually inviting women to take a blood pressure test. After that, brochures, pills and condoms change hands in between discussions about small loans and money saving schemes. Interestingly, this approach is helpful in reducing the awkwardness of discussing sensitive and often culturally taboo topics relating to sexual and reproductive health.
