March greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The days of winter are winding down and as March arrives there

is an internal sense that spring is approaching. The yard at the house has

many daffodil plants in various places of their development. There are

several plants that grew fast and were blooming the first week of

February, prior to the bad storm. I had been excited to see the bright

yellow blossoms. But now those blossoms are lying on the ground,

fading away. Yet, other daffodils plants have just green shoots, others

have buds that are almost ready to open and then, there are just those

few standing tall and bright and in glorious bloom!

How precious it is to me that the LORD continues to speak the

message of hope – the message of resurrection in and throughout

creation. Through these ordinary plants I am reminded how day to day

weather can alter the growth and the time of individual daffodil plants

developing and blooming. These daffodils do remind me that each and

everyone of us are also developing and will bloom at the right time – that is “God’s time” not our time! I

am trusting that because the master gardener, (yes, God Almighty, creator of the universe) is the one

who created and loves every single one of us. This realization helps me to have patience with myself and

with others as well. As I continue to read and re-read the Bible, it gives me hope and assurance, that the

loving God who keeps promises over centuries also has patience with every person in scripture itself. Some

individuals learn and incorporate God’s teachings easily while others take decades and often turn away

from God for one reason or another, repent, and then mature to be amazing servants. Just as the cycle of life

in a daffodil bulb, this parallel in God’s Word gives to me the humbling realization that the very same God

who created everything also knows all about each of us and is willing to never give up on any of us. That is

GOOD NEWS!

May the remainder of this Lent, the remembrance of Jesus’ passion, and the celebration of our

Lord’s resurrection bless you now and through your life.

God bless,

Pastor Monge

I am finding it hard to believe that we are entering the month of March. I remember

back to many of you saying to me when we adopted Nate, “Don’t Blink! Time will fly by.” No truer words have been

said. I really just can’t wrap my head around how quickly things are moving and changing both in the professional

and personal parts of my life.

January and February for me were spent in “planning mode” A huge thank you to everyone who has already

helped us start to establish a little of what will come in the year ahead. As a staff we have been doing some staff

development sessions with Don Nodtvedt. I feel like he is challenging us all to evaluate ourselves and our style of

leadership and helping us work together to strengthen our ministry team to better serve God, this congregation and

eventually our new pastor. We also attended a worship seminar in early February. There was so much information

given there that I am still trying to process and some great ideas that I can’t wait to develop and share. Be watching

for some new things to come in the area of worship.

Our church has agreed to host the monthly gathering for the Dan River Emmaus Community. That will be

here at the church on Saturday March 5th. Please plan to attend. It will be a great time of worship and fellowship. The

gathering will start at 6:00 in the sanctuary. We would love to have you join us. We also need some help with set up

and clean up of the Social Hall.

Wednesday Night Suppers will continue during the month of March. We will have them on March 2nd, 9th and

16th, and then will resume the first week of April. The Pastor’s Bible study seems to be going well. Please let me

know if you would like to facilitate a study on another topic.

We are also planning to do the “Backpack Buddies” program for Park Avenue for the week of Spring Break.

We will be hoping to send out 3 sets of bags with food for these children in our community to help their families

provide for their needs. We are currently still working on the grant writing process to fund this for the entire school

year but I need your help to make this happen for this particular week. If you would like to make a donation to help

with this it would be greatly appreciated. $7.50 will help go a long way to help with one bag for one child.

With an early Easter this year all of our Holy Week activities will happen during March. I will have empty

eggs for people if you would like to fill them with candy for our Easter Egg Hunt or if you would rather you can drop

candy by my office and we can fill the eggs for you. The Easter Egg Hunt will be at 10 a.m. Place to be determined.

I am looking forward to our Holy Week services. They always are very special and a great time to reflect on

the sacrifice Christ made for each of us. Be watching your bulletins for more info to come.

I am working on some new ways to do our Safe Sanctuary training and hope to have that up and running by

mid-March. I will be in touch with each of you about renewing this important training.

I will leave you with a list of upcoming events. As always I am continually in need of volunteers for our

weekly things like Sunday School Floater, Children’s Church Helper, nursery at either service as well as for our

larger and special events like Super Saturday, Wonderful Wednesday, Get Rak’d, Vacation Bible School, and many

others. Please let me know if you are able or would like to serve in any of these areas.

Greetings Fairview friends!

March is upon us! And with that, I just want to give you all a friendly reminder that Easter

Sunday is March 27th this year! Please plan to attend our Holy Week services this year as we remem-

ber the trials of Jesus Christ on the cross and his glorious resurrection.

IMPORTANT! Your Worship Teams for Contemporary Worship are changing! In cooperation

with the Youth Department, we have established an All-Youth Praise Team that will perform every

first Sunday. The youth will next sing on March 6th and the rehearsals for that service will be March

1st at 7:30 p.m. and March 6th at 7:30 a.m. Attendance at both rehearsals is strongly recommended

but only one rehearsal is required. If you can only make the rehearsal prior to service on Sunday

morning, that's fine, but you must do your part to learn the music on your own so that you are ready

to sing come Sunday morning.

All youth that were members of praise teams in the past are no longer members of those

teams. With the youth group singing every first Sunday each month, there will be two other teams

that I will call A and B. A team currently consists of Callia Richardson and Jarrod Brown. B team

currently consists of Connie and Bob Howard and Joanne Ferguson. Adrian Smith will be a floater

and will sing on whatever team is up whenever her work schedule allows participation. Keep in

mind that this is the current composition of the teams and changes can and will be made as need aris-

es. We are also always looking for new voices and talent so feel free to contact me if you are inter-

ested! A calendar for scheduling purposes has been distributed, so be sure to check your emails for

that.

And finally, this is a reminder that all music ensembles are now back in session! I am in des-

perate need of a few handbell players for our full handbell choir that meets on Mondays at 6:00 p.m.

Please join us! The Children's ensemble will be performing soon and the adult choir is hard at work

preparing an exciting cantata! You won't want to miss it! Be on the lookout for dates and times.

A Self-Supporting Ministry of Fairview UMC

As a member of the staff of Fairview, I sometimes forget that I get to see parts of the

working of the church that others do not. One of those parts is our awesome preschool ministry.

During the almost six years that I have served here at Fairview, I have had the opportunity to

watch this self-supporting ministry grow and flourish. When I started in July of 2010, we had

around thirty students, many of whom were only here at preschool for half days. At that point,

we only had two full-time and three part-time employees, and we were really excited for

growth. Over the last few years, our hours of operation have changed and grown as well as the

ages we serve.

During the month of March, we will open summer and all registration to people in the

community. I wanted to tell you a little about BKK and what we have to offer so you can tell

your friends, neighbors and coworkers. We’re currently open from 7:30 am -5:30 pm Monday

through Friday. We take children as young as 6 weeks of age all the way through 5 year-olds

preparing for kindergarten. We employee 13 staff members, most of whom work between 30-40

hours a week. We currently have 65 children enrolled in our program . Most of these children

are here for the full day. We are happy to have people come in and tour the center and call to

ask questions. The best person to contact is Susan Ratliff, the Preschool Director. Here

telephone number is 434-548-5848. If you have questions or need more information about

summer or fall registration, please see me or Susan.

Blessings,

Fairview NewsFairview News United Methodist NewsUnited Methodist News The Bishop’s Convocation on Prayer will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church (903 Forest Avenue,

Henrico, VA 23229) on March 5th. The convocation will include a plenary address on “Changing the Way We Do

Church: Praying for Discernment” by The Reverend Dr. Frederick W. Schmidt, Jr. who holds the Rueben P. Job

Chair in Spiritual Formation at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.

When people walk through the doors of our churches, the implicit message that many

hear is, “Welcome, it will be interesting to see how your being here changes you.”

We should be saying, “Welcome, it will be interesting to see how your participation

in our community changes us.” All the former requires is an “org chart.”

The latter requires prayers of discernment and those can change everything.

In addition to Dr. Schmidt’s plenary presentation, there will be 11 workshops on

different aspects of spiritual formation. Participants may choose two of these workshops.

Visit signup4.net to register, or see Adrian for a full brochure with descriptions of each workshop.

For more information, please contact the Rev. Marc Brown at [email protected].

The Office of Justice and Missional Excellence has

received a request from the provisional conference of

the United Methodist Church in South Africa for

churches/faith communities in the Virginia

Conference who would like to explore being part of

new partnerships with churches and districts in the

growing UMC movement in South Africa. The need

is for lay leadership training, especially young adults.

Also there is a request from the United Methodist

Women for helping establish pre-schools in the rural

areas and support for programs for the elderly.

The most important request they have made is for

churches to enter into long term relationships that

would first focus on praying for one another so the

partnerships may grow and be blessed in serving

God’s mission.

If your church is interested in this new mission

opportunity please contact Rev. Glenn Rowley in the

Office of Justice and Missional Excellence.

Art Notecards for the Elderly

You are invited to help make notecards to take to the

shut-ins and elderly in nursing homes. We want to keep

anyone to take on their communion visits, nursing home

visits or visits to the sick and shut-ins. For more

information, please call James or June Scheier at

434-685-5065. We need your help!

On behalf of the Upper Room, we ask all of you to join

us in covering the upcoming General Conference with

prayer. Upper Room has launched 60 Days of Prayer, a

prayer community beginning on March 31st.

“Dear brothers and sisters in the United Methodist

family, we know that our prayers matter, and in that

certainty, I invite you into a 60-day prayer journey as

you prepare for the 2016 General Conference.

Church leaders, delegates, and interested others will

soon gather in Portland to listen to one another, to

discern God’s will for The United Methodist Church,

and to make decisions that will guide United Methodists

around the world in fulfilling our God-given purpose. As

they and you seek to open your heart and mind to God’s

guidance, these meditations offer a communal practice

that is intended to nurture a spirit of unity and

discipleship. Pray with the assurance that others are

offering the same prayer.”
