Brief

The Asian College of Journalism is a postgraduate college designed to provide students with world-class journalism education adapted to the specific needs of India and other developing countries in Asia. It seeks to prepare its graduates to achieve the highest standards in all branches of the profession, keeping in focus the trend and thrust of convergence in the media, and the consequent demands for multiple skills made on the contemporary journalist.

In India as in other developing countries in Asia, there is a vital need to consolidate media strengths, overcome weaknesses, and raise the professional, intellectual, and ethical standards of journalism, so as to bring the performance of the media up to advanced international levels. The media can be no better than their practitioners. It follows that the growing demand for trained staff from news organisations must be met with a crop of educated young people, not only with the necessary professional skills but also with the broad knowledge, integrity, and social commitment that will make them outstanding journalists.

Brief

IIJNM was founded in 2001 by the BS&G Foundation, a non-profit Trust dedicated to promoting democratic values and institutions in India.

The Institute's mission is to educate students in a broad range of skills and concepts involving the gathering, editing and presentation of information, and prepare them for a career in journalism. While there is a strong emphasis on the "craft" of journalism, the curriculum is designed to help students draw on and supplement their basic education so they are better equipped to handle

intelligently the fundamental issues of the day. They will be exposed to the principles and ethics intrinsic to the profession, to enable them to hone their journalistic skills.

The curriculum has been developed in association with Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, New York. In order to retain flexibility in its course offerings, IIJNM does not seek any national accreditation. The program leading to a diploma or a Postgraduate diploma in journalism, builds on the student's already strong background in liberal arts, the sciences, law or other disciplines. The purpose is not to train candidates for the next job in the field, but to educate them for significant careers.
