Intro Welcome to InternshipFall Term 2018

IntroductionYou are about to embark on an exciting 12-week adventure on which you have been focused for the last three or more years at Masters. Now is the time to “put into practice” the concepts, ideas and practical skills you have developed, not just in your college training, but also throughout your life experience to date.

Your internship “trainer” (pastor) has agreed to welcome you into his/her ministry world and will attempt to recognize and treat you like one of the staff members in this place of ministry. We encourage you to be confident and adventurous as you enter this laboratory period. Keep your eyes and ears open to absorb and learn more than you ever have before. Study like you have never studied, love people like you have never loved and serve like you have never served. While doing that, be sure to carve out time in your busy ministry schedule for your relationship with God and for yourself.

Note to Internship “Pastor Trainer”You will see that this workbook is directed toward the intern, as we expect that he/ she will take the lead in being responsible for all that is required in his/her internship experience. You are being provided with a copy of the workbook so that you are well informed with what the intern is doing and needs to do.

If you have not hosted/supervised interns from Masters College for the last 4-5 years, please be aware that significant changes have been made. No longer does the intern have academic assignments to be completed, but will be able to focus 100% attention on fulfilling the required practicum assignments as outlined in the syllabus and for involvement in areas of ministry where you feel they will be challenged and receive valuable ministry experience. Also different, is the fact that you will be more involved in the assessment process. The intern’s faculty supervisor (Owen Black – Pastoral Ministry, Eldon Wright – Youth Ministry and Kathy Maietta – Children’s Ministry) will be assigning the final grades for the internship, however the assessment information you provide will be vital to the grading process.

One thing that we require of each of our internship pastor trainers is that you intentionally set aside a scheduled time each week to meet with the intern. This is time the intern NEEDS with you and will be invaluable to him/her in helping feel confident in what he/she is doing and for the personal and ministry mentoring that will be gleaned from you. For each of the first two weeks, please schedule a longer period of time for this meeting in order that you and the intern can “map out” the assignments and activities of the internship period. This time is also crucial for you to become familiar with one another and for each of you to better understand expectations.

We at Masters are so appreciative for you taking on this responsibility to help with the practical side of ministry training. It is our prayer that the next 12 weeks will be a profitable and specially blessed time for you, the intern and your congregation.

This WorkbookThis workbook is intended to be a weekly guide for both you and your internship trainer. It will offer you a focus for each week, remind you of the practicum assignments due that week, offer you a guide for the weekly meeting with your internship supervisor and outlines your weekly journal which is to be submitted by the end of the day each Monday.

All assignments and reports may be found in the Internship Website.

Ministry in your church will now be in full swing for the winter season and you and your trainer should now be feeling more comfortable with one another. How do they recognize, respect and allow the activity of the Holy Spirit in services and daily ministry? What is the “Pentecostal history” of this ministry? 5Weekly FocusTime for some evaluation … looking back at the first few weeks of internship, it is time for you and your trainer to let us know how things are going. If you haven’t yet had your trainer complete and submit his/her report, please get it done today. This first report is important for your faculty supervisor to receive and it will enable them to get a clearer snapshot of your internship arrangement.

This week you will be watching what happens in the preparation process of planning the worship service(s). If you haven’t already had the opportunity, ask your trainer for permission to be involved in or to at least observe, the planning process for the worship service as well as any rehearsals that take place during the week. Week VisitationOct 14 - 20

6Weekly FocusYou have now been here for a month and probably feeling the pressure of deadlines upon you or very quickly approaching. This is one of the key objectives of the internship experience … to feel the weight of approaching ministry deadlines, to balance the busyness of preparation, commitments, people demands and personal life. To face and handle the many interruptions that happen daily with people’s needs, surprise requests made by your trainer and “life occurrences”.

This week’s ministry focus is on visitation. One of the most important part of pastoral ministry is being available for people who are in need and being proactive in making contact with people who are lonely, or hurting, or in need of contact from their pastor. You will be doing some pastoral care through your practicum assignments, but discuss with your trainer how you can be involved in visitation on a broader level this week and the weeks ahead. It would be great for you to experience visitation in a school, hospital, home, nursing home, prison facility, etc. Take advantage of this opportunity to broaden your experience.

Week PrayerOct 21 - 27

7Weekly FocusThis week your focus for discussion is “prayer”. Is prayer an essential, non-negotiable part of your life and ministry for you or is prayer a tagged-on after-thought; sometimes even a last minute pleas of desperation to God for help? The question is not intended to heap guilt on your head if in fact you have not been immersed in prayer. It is, however being flagged this week to challenge you to give more of a priority to prayer in your life and internship ministry for the second half of internship and see what a difference prayer can make when we raise it to a place of significance rather than a fleeting thought. God wants to be included in what you are doing.

Week Church Administration Nov 18 - 24

11Weekly FocusSome people go into ministry because they are attracted to the “public” part of it; being in front of people. The reality is, as you are fully realizing as an intern, that the majority of ministry is hard work “behind the scenes”. To operate and manage a church ministry requires much administrative work, communication contacts, prayer (don’t forget that) and meetings.

Your internship may have you primarily focused on one specific area of the ministry. Before your time is up, and if you haven’t already done it, be sure to give some attention to what IS going on behind the scenes in church operations and management.

You are now into your final two weeks of internship and these final days will be a blur as you finish up your practicum assignments and wind down your involvement in areas of ministry. Be especially careful to manage your time well, so you are not so crazy-busy that you are unable to continue strong relationships to the end.

Week Standards and EthicsNov 25 - Dec 01

12Weekly FocusYou are on the home stretch!! There are a lot of details to wrap up this final week with final assessments and reports to be completed. Get a start on these things early in the week so you can enjoy your last days with the people and church you have grown to love these last three months.

Your internship trainer has done a lot to invest time, energy and counsel into you over the last three months. Look for ways this week that you can bless him/her. Lunch or dinner would be nice instead of meeting in the office for your weekly meeting. You will think of something. Take some time to ask questions you have concerning ministry standards and pastoral ethics. There are suggested topics in the Weekly Meeting Outline this week, but be sure to ask the questions that are on your mind.
