1In 2016, I received an LU Special Project Grant for $5000 to curate a graphic design exhibition that featured work from local designers in the Beaumont, Orange, and Port Arthur community. The goal was to showcase the great work happening in the region outside the already well

documented Houston design community. The fea-tured work included advertising, marketing, freelance, illustration, printmaking, and web design. The work featured in the Export exhibition was published in a 120 page exhibition catalog. The final design won a 2017 Gold

ADDY and Best in Print Award through the Lake Charles, LA Chapter of the American Advertising Federation. The full document can be viewed at this link:

2Everyone fails, but no one likes to talk about it. Anonymous Failures acknowledges this fact and allows participants the opportunity to post their failure anonymously. Inspired by participatory projects such as Post Secret and Candy Chang’s Confessions, Anonymous Failures is a cathartic and collective

experience for the audience. The project was showcased at the 2016 LU Department of Art Faculty Show at the Dishman Art Museum, the Frontier AIGA Design Educator Conference in October 2016 in Bozeman, MT, and the 2017 Lamar University Student Leadership Conference.

In addition to the interactive installation, I created a website and social media pages for the Anonymous Failures project, which allowed visitors to post their failures on Twitter or Instagram and see their responses on the homepage.

3In 2015, I received an AIGA Innovate grant of $5000 to develop the first ever satellite chapter that worked in conjunction with a city chapter. I worked closely with AIGA Houston to develop programming in the Beaumont area in order to provide better opportunities for local

designers that cannot make it the 90 miles to Houston for events. Events included a software demonstration by an Adobe representative, a career lecture by The Creative Group, a local presentation about coding in graphic design, a journaling and goal setting workshop,

a community brunch, and small business development workshop. I worked to design a flowchart to help future satellite groups and designed all promotional material for social media.

4In 2018, the LU Department of Art faculty collaborated together to write an art appreciation textbook titled, Art as Living Practice published by Kendall Hunt. My contribution to the book is Chapter 10: Through the Designer’s Eyes: Graphic Design where I detail a brief history of design, discuss formal

analysis, and provide a section about career pathways in graphic design. There is also a classroom assignment that professors can implement to enhance learning. The scope of the book has a local/regional focus featuring many local artists and designers, prominent LU alumni, and

Houston area contributers. The book is now available in a full print edition and is currently being marketed to cam-puses in the region in Beaumont, Orange, and Port Arthur and potentially Houston area campuses. https://he.kendallhunt.com/product/art-living-practice

5In 2017, I received a book contract from Bloomsbury Pub-lishing to write a book about creative teams. Surviving the Creative Space: Teamwork Techniques for Designers is a book geared towards the emerging creative professional in the first 0-5 years of their career. The book is designed to serve

as a guide for these readers looking to work in a creative team setting. Interviews and case studies make up a large component in the book. It is my hope to collaborate with students in the future in order to expand on this research and provide students valuable opportunities to grow their

skills in research and design. In addition to writing the book, my cover design concept is being utitlized by the Bloomsbury design team for the final book design to be released in 2020.

6In 2012 and 2013, I worked with the Dishman Art Museum to host a graphic design student showcase. A unique brand identity was created for this event. Students had to brainstorm names for the event and vote on their favorite concepts. In this event, the final name was

‘Creative Sweet’ and candy with each student’s name was featured on the postcard design to advertise the event. I served as art director to this project, and the final designs were created by students in the course: Rachael Binagia and Thomas Harris. The final postcard

design was submitted to the regional Southeast Texas Press Club Awards and won a third place award in the ‘Special Events Publication’ category. Additionally, I created a book design with each student’s bio, photo, and website helped promote the event Online.

JURIED DESIGN WORK

Inspired by the Works Progress Administration posters of the 1930s and 1940s, this two color screen printed poster was printed in an edition of 100 prints. It was created first for a silent auction fundraiser for the College of Fine Arts and Communication at Lamar University. The goal

was to attract a local audience and feature iconography about Beaumont, TX. The piece was auctioned to help raise funds for student scholarships and addtional prints were auctioned at other local charity events in Southeast Texas. The poster also earned first place in

a design competition by storyblocks.com in July 2015 and was featured on their website with a profile of my graphic design work.

8In my research based design work, I’ve had extensive experience designing patterns for textile design. This series of pattern designs was created specifically for quilting fabrics. The design was printed and sewn into a quilted purse. The final design was selected for a Merit Award

in the Textiles and Patterns Category for 3x3, The Magazine of Contemporary Illustration in 2013. 3x3 is the first publication devoted entirely to the art of contemporary illustration. Published in the United States and distributed worldwide, and their sole interest

is in sharing what’s shaping international illustration. I was also a finalist for the Connecting Threads Fabric Design competition in 2013. https://blog.connectingthreads.com/meet-design-contest-finalist-sherry-saunders/

9This environmental type installation was created as part of a project titled “Abiguity and Interminacy in Graphic Design.” The goal of the project was to explore ambiguous forms of communication in order to generate more active engagement from viewers. This piece titled “Investigation”

won a SECAC Members Exhibition Merit Award at the 2011 SECAC Exhibition Juried by Dan Cameron. I continue to consider ways in which graphic design and visual communication can vary on a continuum from basic ambiguity such as a visual metaphor

to completely indeterminate where the viewer’s interpretation can be infinate and all equally valid ways to interpret a visual communication piece.

10This series of work titled “Decorum” was created using source text from a Decorum book published in the United States in 1896. The book may seem outdated by today’s standards, however, women’s behavior, their bodies, and their words are a continuous source of open and public

criticism. I paired the text using experimental hand lettering techniques with contemporary images of modern US women. The piece shown here on the right titled “Attract” was selected for a juried exhibition at the 2016 Oso Bay XIX Design Symposium in Corpus

Cristi, TX. The piece was selected by renowned graphic designer and exhibition juror, James Victore.

11The Center for the Application of Digital Technologies for Heath and Disabilities (CADT) is a new initiative on the LU campus funded by a $150,000 innovation grant from the university president’s office. The project is run by the chair of the Speech and Hearing Sciences Department, and

I was commissioned to create a new brand identity for their Online learning platform as well as each individual learning program within the platform. Through research and ideation, I developed the name iManage: Digital Health Learning Platform and developed a logo and app

icon for this concept. I also created a series of logos for each learning program within the initiative including: College Connect, Conversation Connection, Dementia Directions, Managing Hearing Loss, Aphasia Conversation Lab, and iVoice.

12In addition to creating a brand identity for the CADT learning platforms, I also created a website mock up for each platform that included both desktop and mobile versions. Each learning platform used the same typography to allow for a more cohesive look to the project, but they each used

a different color palette that allowed each recognition and differentiation from one another. This client project allowed me to expand my skills in user interface design and connect with colleagues in other departments including Speech and Hearing Science, Deaf Studies,

Nursing, and Computer Science. Since concluding this project, I have continued to partner with colleagues to create design work and develop interdisciplinary projects.

13From 2011–2012, I worked for Discovery Communications (now Discovery Inc.) as a graphic designer. This Prophets of Science Fiction campaign was created in 2011. I took the plain title treatment and embellished it here as you see in this campaign. I selected

a technology based stock photo as the background image and used this to create the additional assets. The aesthetic is carried through the poster design, iTunes cover art, Twitter skin, and Get Glue stickers. The Ridley Scott photograph used on the poster was

not available for additional design elements except the banner ads, yet I was able to capture the same mood within the other assets to create a cohesive and successful campaign.

14From 2011–2012, I worked for Discovery Communications (now Discovery Inc.) as a graphic designer. In this particular campaign for the show Bering Sea Gold, I was tasked with rendering the show’s title treatment to appear as though it was being scooped up

out of the sea by an excavator. The promotional image was used in all the digital aspects of the promotional campaign including iTunes cover artwork, promotional email blasts, and social media pages such as Facebook and Twitter. In this role, I learned a lot about digital

marketing and the speed of change for graphics on social media platforms, and I use this knowledge to develop real world challenges in a classroom setting.

15From 2011–2012, I worked for Discovery Communications (now Discovery Inc.) as a graphic designer. This press kit was created in 2011 for Investigation Discovery, a network that features real crime dramas. Under the direction of the team’s creative director, I selected stock imagery and utilized

creative image editing to evoke a “wicked” holiday mood that would appeal to viewers who enjoy the network’s suspensful shows. The assets were combined in a branded Christmas stocking and St. Nick’s Coal candy to entice members of the press to write about the series. The final

result was well received by the client and implemented in that year’s holiday season campaign.

16In 2014, I worked as a freelance designer for Americommerce, a local Beaumont, TX company that creates ecommerce website solutions. This project for Cool as a Moose was a mock up that was implemented for the client to enhance their ecommerce platform. The Americommerce company was

bought out by Capital One in late 2014, which concluded my freelance work with the company, but I learned about ecommerce strategy and layout as a result of this experience. As of 2018, the company is again locally owned, and I am connecting with the owners to provide company

tours to students and host lectures on best practices in web design. I maintain strong ties to the professional design community in Southeast Texas, and it has been a great way to keep up with industry trends and allows students opportunities to engage with potential employrers.

CLIENT DESIGN WORK

From 2007–2009, I worked as a graphic designer for the Boston Redevelopment Authority. In those two years, I worked on a wide range of projects for various city iniatives such as ReadBoston, EITC Tax Campaign, Boston Urban Mechanics Program, GreenTech Boston, ONEin3 Boston,

among others. Under the direction of Creative Director, Dan Moon, I received an AIGA Best of New England Award for a Food + Fuel logo in 2009. On display above, is the Downtown Crossing Holiday Village project, which was an effort to bring more residents and visitors to Boston’s

Downtown Crossing shopping district during the holidays. I developed the identity for the 2008 holiday season which was carried out through street banners, wall banners, advertising graphics, and a Santa stage. I also helped in event planning and booked a nativity themed petting zoo.

CLIENT DESIGN WORK

This client project was created for the Lamar State College Port Arthur Commercial Music Program. The client wanted a poster series that would be easily recognizalbe for their fall 2012 events. The posters stood out in the cojmmunity and helped generate interest in concerts and workshops held in

the Commercial Music Department. This series earned First Place in the Poster Category at the 2013 Press Club of Southeast Texas Awards in Beaumont, TX. They also won a Gold ADDY Award in the category of Advertising for the Arts and Sciences in Lake Charles, LA in 2013. The series

went on to the ADDY District 10 awards and received a Bronze ADDY Award in the category of Advertising for the Arts and Sciences. The posters did so well, the department went on to use the template for two additional semesters through the fall of 2013.

CLIENT DESIGN WORK

Each year I design work for the Department of Art and College of Fine Arts and Communication as part of my continued ser-vice to Lamar University. One of the projects that I find most engaging is the opportunity to design the annual Art Faculty Show Card. This department has a wide range of faculty and

staff specializations including: art history, art education, painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, photography, video, graphic design, printmaking, and mixed media. This presents a fun challenge to represent the fields of art and design through one image. In this case, thumb tacks rep-

resent faculty’s emphasis on critique in teaching practice. Additional work for the department include designing de-partmental recruitment materials and promotional materi-als for the Department of Art summer camp. I work closely with local print vendors to produce the final print products.

CLIENT DESIGN WORK

In a current client project, I’m developing the cover and figures for a textbook authored by faculty in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at Lamar University. I worked with the authors and publisher to develop the cover image as well as over fifty charts, graphs, and figures for the textbook

interior. Last, I will create a PowerPoint template for the authors to utilize in their lectures that will accompany the textbook. My primary task is to develop a series of cohesive visuals that have a cohesive style, typography, and color scheme to the cover design in order to create

a professional textbook product that students will find visually appealing and clearly communicates the visual content. Additionally, each chart is then translated into black and white for additional publishing options.
