Located in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Royal Danish Playhouse is designed to be a bridge for the city; connecting both programmatic and physical elements. The pier on which the theater is sited also contains shops, residences, and a remote campus for a nearby university. The

playhouse and its accompanying buildings are designed to bring life and movement back to this once bustling shipping pier.

Page 7: Professional Portfolio

The location and size of the pier demands for more than just a theater to be present on the site. Its proximity to cultural centers and civic amenities provides it with a wonderful chance to unite Copenhagen, a city divided in two by its central

harbor. By introducing a variety of program to the site, including dining, shopping, residential, transportation, and educational facilities, the pier begins to interact with the city in ways a theater never could. A dialog is started amongst

the new and existing, and the two parties begin to weave together. Similar programmatic elements within the site communicate with those in the city and provide support for each other, forming a symbiotic relationship. This interplay of the existing and new then begins to blur the site lines as the pier reaches into the city grid beckoning one to come and

experience the theater and harbor.

Page 8: Professional Portfolio

This parti shows the theater in its most basic form, and is the genesis for what evolved into the final form of the building. Within this sketch is a primitive division of space, separating performance spaces from viewing spaces. These two disparate types of program had drastically different spatial requirements. The beginning of this thought process is seen in the slant of the viewing space, done to encourage sight lines in later iterations.

The diagonal pitch of the theater best lends itself to be explored in longitudinal section. The pitch of the building was determined by the incline in the auditorium space. Program was divided into a tri-parti arrangement, and similar functions are stacked to encourage clarity and efficiency.
