Log Cleaning

Media blasting and pressure washing with cleaning/wood brightening products are the most common methods of stripping and cleaning log and wood surfaces. There is a trade-off

between the amount of effort required and the appearance of your home, so carefully consider which approach best suits you. I-Wood-Care provides a wide range of Log Cleaners, Wood Strippers and Sanding and Blasting Materials. Our staff can help you select the best preparation for your home. We recommend that your log home be properly cleaned before stain is applied. CPR and Log Wash are our most popular cleaning and brightening product – great for clean-up before restaining. X-180 Weathered Wood Restorer – for preparation of oil-based finishes only – is an aggressive cleaner using oxalic acid, which brightens and cleans.

The lightest wash method, used primarily before recoats or for new, non-weathered wood, is a simple bleach and TSP/90 formula mixed as follows: 1/2 cup TSP/90, 1 quart household bleach and 3 quarts clean warm water. To use: 1) Wet log surface with water; 2) Apply light wash solution with hand garden pump starting at bottom and working up; 3) Leave on wood 5 to 10 minutes; 4) Pressure rinse with clean water starting at top and working down. This bleach formula will clean light dirt and mold. You can scrub with the solution to take care of stubborn mold patches.Note: When power washing, do not direct a full blast at log walls. Use a sweeping motion and stand back from wall. Too much force will rough up the wood fibers and may result in fuzziness. Also, too much water pressure during pressure washing may cause water leaks in the interior of your log home. Water leaks, if they occur, are normally due to gasket failures or areas where gaps have opened due to age and weathering.

CPR is used to clean and brighten uncoated wood that is dirty, faded or gray from UV exposure. Mix CPR to the brightening solution strength for use on new construction just prior to staining to remove dirt and grime from the building process and to break down mill glaze. Mix at the cleaning solution strength to use for periodic cleaning on stained logs to extend the life of your stain.Note: CPR is not recommended for use on Redwood, Douglas Fir or other high tanning woods. CPR may occasionally darken these woods. Please test first. Smart Strip by Perma-ChinkUse Smart Strip and a pressure washer to remove the most stubborn finishes. Sanding & Blasting Material Instructions

To remove stubborn coatings or to bring your log home closest to its original appearance, there are many sanding and blasting options available.

Osborn brushes are used with a variable speed grinder and will remove old finish on an entire wall or can be used to smooth smaller areas during construction. Our Osborn brushes are very popular with homeowners and contractors. The Buffy Pad System will buff and smooth your logs when a lighter smoothing application is needed.

The quickest method for completely removing an old finish from a log home is to blast the home with either corn cob or glass media. I-Wood-Care carries both cob and glass media and can also supply a full kernel cob blaster package. Corn cob media is made from ground up corn and is biodegradable. Crushed glass media is also a green option. It’s made from ground up recycled bottles and it leaves a fine sand waste after use.

SANDING & BLASTING MATERIALSKernel Cob Blaster by Sashco

A new stain removal tool for the log home industry. The Kernel Corn Cob Blaster is designed to easily remove stain from logs. It works under the same concept as a sand blaster, but it uses ground up corncobs instead of sand because sand is too aggressive for wood.The Kernel is much quicker than chemical methods of stripping. It leaves the logs dry, which allows the staining process to begin immediately if you choose not to borate your home. The Kernel features a custom fan nozzle, for an even and wide removal stroke. INSECT CONTROL PRODUCTS

Application Instructions for Insect Control Products I-Wood-Care offers a full line of products to help control problems with carpenter bees, carpen-

ter ants, termites, old house bores and powder post beetles. Products like Drione and EcoExempt D Dust will treat for carpenter bee infestations. Stain addi-

tives like NBS 30 and Bug Juice will prevent future problems.Carpenter Bees: A common nuisance around rural wood homes, carpenter bees are large (one

inch), yellow and black bees active in early Spring. They resemble bumble bees but do not live in colonies, have fewer hairs and have no pollen sacs on their hind legs.

Their name derives from their ability to drill through wood and nest in the hole. Their drilling creates a near-perfect hole, approximately 1/2-inch in diameter. The hole is usually located on the underside of the wood surface, including siding, soffits, decks, overhangs, fence posts and window frames. Although the hole appears to be only an inch or two deep, it rarely ends there. The female carpenter bee will turn 90 degrees and bore a channel from six inches to as long as four feet. This channel serves as a main corridor from which she will drill small egg-holding chambers a few inches deep. After depositing an egg, she brings in a mass of pollen for the newly hatched larvae to feed on and then seals the chamber to ensure development. She then repeats the process for the next egg.

To eliminate carpenter bees you must treat the nest. Treating the carpenter bee hole is simple, easy and safe. The most effective product is Drione Dust, applied with a Crusader Duster. Both are available from I-Wood-Care. As the female enters the hole, she will drag the dust into the nest and the larvae will be killed. Drione will kill a carpenter bee within five minutes and it lasts for many months.

INSECT CONTROL PRODUCTSBug Juice

Bug Juice is a remarkable insecticide paint additive designed to eliminate crawling and flying insects on interior and exterior surfaces. It can be applied on most interior and exterior surfaces, including kitchens and pantries.Bug Juice does not repel insects, it is contact pesticide and begins to work after an insect makes contact with the treated surface. Log Builder Caulking was designed to absorb most log movement. Most movement occurs within the first few years when logs lose the majority of their moisture, causing them to shrink and their joints to expand. Since Log Builder Caulking stretches and compresses up to 100% of the original joint size and stays elastic, it won’t crack, peel or pull away from properly prepared logs. Instead, it creates a tight seal to keep water, dust, bugs and wind from seeping into your home for many years.Log Builder is the smooth sealant for milled and hand-crafted log struc-tures, used for checks, cracks or seams.Note: Apply Backer Rod to an opening of 1/4" or more check, crack or seam. Caulking & Chinking Application

A ll I-Wood-Care caulks are good for interior or exterior use and are easy to use and clean up with soap and water. Log Builder and

Woodsman are smooth caulks. Conceal and Energy Seal have a textured surface. All of these products can be used for smaller beads to help seal checks and joints between logs.

Log Jam Chinking and Perma-Chink Chinking are designed for larger chinking beads, but work on smaller joints too. Heavier textured Log Jam and Perma-Chink chinkings are designed to mimic mortar joints seen in older log homes. Very elastic and thinner than our smooth caulks, chinking is designed to tool easier when using in a larger seam.• If application is to bare wood, wood must be clean. • If logs are stained, be certain that the stain and the chinking or

caulking are compatible. • Install a bond breaker so that the chink or caulk line will adhere at the

top and bottom of the joint only. This allows for the chink or caulk to flex with log movement.

• Gun the chinking or caulking into the joint. • Tool the chinking or caulking to achieve a continuous, smooth seal

to the logs.

Sealing log checks and cracksBecause of the log’s tendency to take on water from rain and snow,

through cracks and checks, it’s important to pay close attention to these openings and prep and seal properly. The photos at right show the use of Conceal to fill checks, but Log Builder can be used for this application too.

Note: Use a bond breaker (i.e., Backer Rod) when significant log movement could occur. When movement is known to be minimal (as with many older homes), using Backer Rod is still best, but usually less critical.

Backer Rod is a foam material used to fill large checks and gaps between logs. It also provides support for chinking and sealants. Its primary pur-pose is act as a “bond-breaker” and promote two-point adhesion, giving the joint and sealing material the ability to compress and expand as logs move.Sealants and chinking do not adhere to the backer rod – only to the log surfaces of the joint – allowing for movement without damaging the sealing material. I-Wood Care distributes a number of types and profiles of backer rod including the unique Grip Strip™.You should select Backer Rod based upon your particular needs.
