Faculty Poster Sessions 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

LTB Main Hall

This is the second year that a poster session is offered during Professional Development Day. For those who have not had the opportunity to attend a poster session before, they are a form of presenting information and research by an individual or group of representatives at conferences or seminars. The posters presented today are facilitated by faculty who participated in 2014-15 Innvo8 and our 1st Year Faculty Workshop Series. We hope you are inspired by the efforts of our faculty poster presenters. Thank you so much for your support by participating! Innov8 Participants (Cohort 2 ) – Action Research Studies

1 Imbedded Games in my HUM 2020 F2F Class I was not happy with the passing rate of my first exam in HUM 2020 classes. The test grades improved as the semester went on. I implemented “games” as reviews and placed them on PAL to help the students become more comfortable with the knowledge and skills needed to excel on the exams.

4 Moving Mobile Apps to the College Classroom This project discusses an action research study focused on developing a mobile learning model for developmental reading and writing students. Patterns of organization (illustration, compare/contrast, definition, etc.) were identified as a bottleneck for the skill-set progress of developmental readers and writers. The research study incorporated a mixed-method design measuring how and to what extent mobile learning in academic settings would prove beneficial to the developmental reading and writing students using the Inspiration app. The effectiveness of using the mobile app was measured by assessing students’ opinions of the use of reading and writing strategies and by analyzing student performance scores in relation to traditional developmental reading and writing strategies. The findings revealed students enjoyed using the mobile app and performed very well.

6 The Impact of an Online Orientation Students are not submitting homework and assignments in PAL because of their lack of understanding of how to use the drop box. Students would email or call my office saying they had not submitted their assignments because the drop box was “not working.” They would try to bring them to my office or email them to me after the due date. This was impacting their grades. An online orientation was designed to specifically explain how to use the drop box in PAL. This orientation also helps the student to understand there are deadlines for assignments in PAL, and if the deadline is missed, the drop box is closed and will not accept submissions.

7 Jazz Up the Online Discussion Board This action research project was undertaken to address and hopefully improve low Discussion Board grades and brief/inaccurate discussion postings in my EDF 1005 online class. A variety of tools, technologies, and strategies are used to attempt to meet the objective.

8 “Stepping Up” to the Challenge of Integrating QSEN Competencies with Foundational Nursing Interventions Integration of the 6 QSEN Competencies (person-centered care, safety, teamwork and collaboration, informatics, evidence-based care, and quality improvement) requires critical thinking and is essential for providing safe, quality nursing care (Amer, 2014). Integrating the competencies with nursing interventions can be challenging for beginning nursing students. This project sought to determine if implementation of interactive hybrid nursing interventions modules increased beginning nursing students’ critical thinking skills and application of the QSEN core competencies. The foundational nursing interventions modules included simulated patient scenarios, critiquing of videos, online quizzes, and games.

9 Making the Grade: Using Technology to Increase Performance on Standardized Tests Current generation students have a wide variety of tools at their fingertips--tablet computers with touch-screen interfaces, handheld cellular phone devices that access the internet and communicate across the globe, and laptop computers that weigh around two pounds. My goal was to utilize these devices for the benefit of a group of students who need to pass two standardized tests in order to progress in their academic careers: the FCAT Reading exam and the PERT college placement exam. My research includes "The Maker Movement Connects to the Classroom" by Greg Thompson (November 2014) and "Combining Traditional and Contemporary Texts: Moving My English Class to the Computer Lab" by Tracy J. Tarasiuk (April 2010), both relatively current perspectives in infusing technology in the classroom.

10 Engaging Intensive Reading Students Through Interactive Online Resources (IOR) Reading continues to be a problem area for some high school students even at the collegiate level. To be successful readers, students must have explicit instruction in specific strategies to comprehend and a variety of ways to practice, practice, and practice. The use of

Marguerite Coke-Maxwell

technology, specifically interactive online resources, holds promise to solve these problems by engaging students that need a variety of activities to use reading strategies necessary to improve reading comprehension. Satisfaction surveys for each interactive resources helped determine the effectiveness of each activity.

11 A 3-Pronged Communication Strategy to Increase Student Retention in Online Sections of an Introductory Psychology Course An analysis of 6 online sections of PSY2012 – General Psychology showed a student withdrawal rate between 10% and 36% per section, with an average rate of 19%. The approach being used to decrease the withdrawal rate includes: Increasing communication from and with the professor via video presentations, increased email messages, virtual office hours, and a questions-for-the-professor forum. Increasing student interaction with each other and connection with the course content via large and small group discussions. Connecting the student with the college via news announcements of campus activities and opportunities.

12 Using Technology to Provide Feedback for Independent Practice Music students are required to demonstrate mastery of their primary instrument. They receive a one hour private lesson once a week. We are researching the progress in vocal music study of students who use Media Share for real time feedback from the professor between their private lessons compared to those who do not use the software.

13 Pearson Technology Implementation Impacts Student Success in Anatomy & Physiology 1 As facilitators of learning, instructors have a vital need to communicate and discuss with colleagues innovative instructional strategies to “enhance the teaching and learning environment” as defined by The Florida Master Teacher Seminar. Technology innovations can make education more effective and efficient. It was observed in Anatomy and Physiology 1 that students struggle to master lab content due to the amount of material required and unique science terminology, especially in the histology unit of lab that explores the concept of bodily organs being made of specific tissue types. To develop self-validation, iPads were used to promote self-verification of structure identification utilizing Pearson Practice Anatomy Lab 3.0. This method allowed instructors to interact with additional students and respond to detailed, in-depth questions to provide a connection between the terminology and the structural models. Additionally, students were prompted to complete Mastering Anatomy and Physiology online lab practical quizzes to test their progress on tissue identification prior to the lab practical exam. These implementations have increased student success and promoted internal student motivation by modeling how the use of technologies can enhance learning.

14 The Video-Conference Classroom The Video-Conference Classroom will give our students the opportunity of more class availability, specifically those students in outlying areas. The Video-Conference Classroom provides students the benefit of taking classes not otherwise available to them due to low enrollment, travel restrictions, or lack of instructor availability. It also captures the students who want a fully face-to-face connection with the professor, or a hybrid class format. Students and professors will be connected by video-conference technology within the classroom, with the Professor alternating campuses for class meetings. Instruction is delivered in real-time in both locations.

16 Is ANYBODY Out There? Does ANYBODY Care? This poster presentation will address the need for effective ENGAGEMENT with students in a virtual or online classroom. The method implemented or "tested" for this presentation is simple yet practical, yielding great results. The poster presentation will be rich with student testimonials and feedback. It provides a glimpse into the "student's perspective" of what effective ENGAGEMENT looks like in the online environment and how we as faculty can best achieve this important goal.

17 College Algebra with POPS (Process Oriented Problem Solving) Each fall and spring semester a treatment class is compared to a control class in College Algebra. In the treatment class, POPS projects replace the traditional unit quizzes. POPS are Process Oriented Problem Solving collaborative graded projects designed to foster and develop creative and analytical thinking in contextual applications appropriate to the mathematical content of the course. The untested thesis is that there is a long-term benefit for students in the treatment classes.

18 Financial Aid Early Warning System I have chosen to work on the issue of an early warning system for Financial Aid. This early warning system is comprised of items that can alert the financial aid office, staff, and director of financial aid to those who are at greatest risk of losing their financial aid. Polk State College and other colleges around the United States all seem to have the same issue with students in this category. The main reason is that it is not the responsibility of the professors to manage the finances of students. However, it is a part of the institutions duty as a business to ensure students are being serviced when they are signing up for financial aid. Speaking with the financial aid office staff, 60% of the students who have signed up for financial aid are at risk of losing or have lost their financial aid due to the office not being alerted in time to put a stop to these issues of problems that are plaguing the system. In short, this is money given to a college with the expectation of the student attending the college. Therefore, professors can be part of the system even though it is the responsibility of students to manage their own finances. This can be accomplished through the “Early Warning System.” The

Mark Mershon

Page 8: Professional Development Day at a Glance · Professional Development Day at a Glance April 10, 2015 ... Lays Chips & Cookie Coke, ... This project discusses an action research study

alert system is quite simple for professors and involves a mirror system that is partially in place at the moment for academic warning. The system as a whole will be discussed further on my poster and subsequent paper following my presentation.

19 Instructing APA Formatting and Style Standards Through Computer Gaming College students often experience difficulties writing professional papers that adhere to American Psychological Association (APA) formatting and style standards. While students are introduced to the Modern Language Association (MLA) writing style in Polk State College composition courses, APA style is not presented. During upper- division courses in the social sciences, APA writing style is a required skillset, which results in profound student apprehension. To increase student knowledge and confidence in applying APA writing standards, students were exposed to a computer-based game designed to instruct and reinforce key APA concepts. Student APA knowledge was assessed before and after exposure to the game using a pretest/posttest, quasi-experimental methodology to determine the game’s effectiveness in instructing APA knowledge. The game and accompanying effectiveness test was deployed across multiple courses in two college departments.

20 Reinforcing Attendance with Semi-Formative Assessments Lack of attendance poses a significant problem in college courses, especially in mathematics. Missed classes will have a substantial impact, especially for those students who are struggling. It is therefore important to reinforce attendance, yet naming it mandatory via the syllabus does not seem to have the wanted outcome since actual participation rather than simple presence in the classroom is what matters most. On the other hand, there is significant amount of literature supporting the usefulness of formative assessments in the classroom. Use of formative assessment by teachers can help them to see how well the students learn the material while at the same time the learners can identify their true understanding by practicing under no pressure “for a grade” the newly presented material. Never the less, precisely the no-credit element causes a significant number of students to be indifferent to the formative assessment, thus nullifying the reason for which it was used in the first place. The purpose of my case study is to reinforce attendance and participation by introducing daily semi-formative assessments. In some of my classes, I introduced daily quizzes on recently-learned material with a very low weight towards the final grade (5-7%). In other courses, I did not introduce the quizzes, assigning instead completely formative assessments in class. Improvement using the semi-formative assessments will be discussed.

21 Traditional VS Non-Traditional Students and their Perceptions of Accounting in an Introductory Accounting Course This study examined traditional and non-traditional undergraduate student perception of accounting in an introductory accounting course at two campuses of Polk State College. The consensuses of the student's perceptions were positive over the perceptional items measured. However, three of the items FORWARD (I am looking forward to this course), DIFFICULT (this course will be difficult), and

Austin Zekeri

Page 9: Professional Development Day at a Glance · Professional Development Day at a Glance April 10, 2015 ... Lays Chips & Cookie Coke, ... This project discusses an action research study

INSTRUCTOR (the instructor will affect my opinion of the usefulness of this course) indicated a change between the groups. In the pre-survey response, non-traditional students perceived FORWARD and INSTRUCTOR higher than traditional students while both groups have an almost identical mean response for DIFFICULT. However, at the end of the semester (post survey) traditional students now perceived both FORWARD and INSTRUCTOR higher while non-traditional students now perceived the course to be more difficult. The findings in this study support the ideas and premise that non-traditional students are quite different from traditional students, not just because of the obvious age differences but because of the differences in job, related experiences, and their needs as relate to educational institutions.

22 Learning on the Go! Using Mobile Technologies to Enhance Classroom Learning The basis of this study is explore how today’s teachers and students utilize mobile technologies to improve instruction and learning in a variety of disciplines. Through conversations, observation and surveys, data will be gathered to show how smart phones, tablets, and even hand-held gaming devices are used in the educational process. In addition, the study will show how software, apps and websites are used for sharing, gathering, synthesizing and analyzing information. Results will be used to illustrate the types of devices, frequency of use, methods of use, and the impact on teaching and learning. This study will likely impact the increased importance and usefulness of mobile technologies as a tool to enhance instruction and learning.

Session 1 (12:10 – 1:15 p.m.)

Session 1 – Teaching and Learning – Track 1 Engagement that is Truly Engaging – Stephen Drier and Joyce Lee (LTB 2278) Do you ever feel like you are doing an engagement activity, but students are not engaged? In this session, we will demonstrate strategies to help increase engagement and promote learning. Creativity in the Classroom – Nanci Brillant-Powers (LTB 1302) Attendees will be given specific strategies for increasing student engagement in the classroom through the use of technology, movement, grouping, and creative expression. Attendees will understand the difference between engagement vs. entertainment in the classroom, and will understand what specific things can change passive, compliant students into active, enthusiastic learners. Making it Personal: Online Learning – Beverly Woolery and Sherri Davis (LAC 1231) Nearly one-third of all college students are enrolled in online courses. To improve student learning in the online environment, research states that the course’s level of interpersonal interaction is the most important factor in predicting student grades. Interpersonal interaction allows students to get to know their instructors and classmates despite the distance between them. This session will demonstrate useful ideas and strategies to include interpersonal interaction in the online environment. Sometimes the Pot’s Too Small – Richard Leedy (LAC 1241) Too many times we teach a concept a certain way simply because that is the way we were taught. Since we understand the technique, we don’t bother trying to find a different way that might be easier for the student to understand. We will look at two such concepts. The first is finding the inverse of a matrix without using any fractions. The second is finding all zeros of a polynomial equation with real coefficients given one complex zero. We will do this without using synthetic division involving complex coefficients. Increasing Student Engagement and Transforming Learning: A Community Based Learning Approach – Natalie Whitcomb, LJ Russum, Anthony Cornett, and Gerene Thompson (LTB 1120) Are you a faculty member seeking ideas to increase student engagement and transform learning? Then this session may be for you! Several faculty members who have successfully used Community-Based Learning (CBL) approaches to enhance learning and inspire students will share their experiences. Attendees will also learn more about how and why community- based learning can work as part of their teaching strategy to achieve course learning objectives and promote the idea of a community-conscious citizenry.

Session 1 – Personal and Professional Growth and

Development – Track 2 Ask the Provosts: Updates and Q&A – Martha Santiago and Steve Hull (LTB 1121) This session is open to all and will include updates on the campuses as well as future plans and opportunities for participants to ask questions about leadership. Financial Fitness: Life as Gazelles – Sara Kniffin (LAC 1238) Do you always seem to have more month than money? The average person will make over $1,000,000 dollars in the course of his/her lifetime. What could you do if you captured those dollars and made them work harder for you? Exploring the fundamentals of Dave Ramsey’s

Page 15: Professional Development Day at a Glance · Professional Development Day at a Glance April 10, 2015 ... Lays Chips & Cookie Coke, ... This project discusses an action research study

Financial Peace University, you can learn the basic principles of the personal budget, understand how interest can be a best friend or worst enemy, and dream big with the hope of waking up one day to scream, “I’m debt free!” Snowball-snow cones will be served during class. Guardian ad Litem Program – Diane Schmelz, Recruiting Coordinator (LTB 1122) This presentation will explain the role and responsibilities of the Guardian ad Litem Program. Guardian ad Litem Program accepts volunteers who will become the voice for children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect. Presently, there are approximately 1,700 children who have been removed from their homes in Polk County. This session is open to those who may be interested in becoming a volunteer or who are just interested in learning about the program in general. Relieving Stress by Horsing Around – Kathy Bucklew (Outside Behind LTB) There are only two animals acceptable as disability service animals – the dog and the horse. What is so special about the horse? Come learn about what a relationship with a horse can do for you. Learn how to shake hands with a horse, what it takes to connect with a horse, and how to improve your horseback riding experience when you go to a riding stable. Enjoy the shaded outdoor “classroom” behind LTB and meet Crystal, the beautiful American Paint that keeps Kathy busy in her spare time…and relieves her stress. Communication Techniques for Difficult Conversations – CR Junkins (LAC 1234) This presentation will introduce nine communication tools that can be used during difficult and awkward conversations, including conflict resolution. This presentation is also an introduction to the second presentation, "Handling Difficult Conversations." Caring for Aging Loved Ones, EAP provider = AETNA Resources for Living – Beverly Rousseau (LAC 1243) Many of us find ourselves caring for our parents or elderly loved ones. This class discuss the basics: how to assess your parent’s or loved one’s needs; alternatives for decision making; tips on when and how to discuss loved one’s needs as the ability to remain independent declines.

Session 1 – Technology – Track 3 Curriculog 101 – Sarah Plazak and Patricia Jones (LTB 1125A) This session is an overview of how to compose and submit proposals for AQC meetings using the Curriculog system. We will walk through how to build each of the four proposal types: new course proposals, course modification proposals, new program proposals, and program modification proposals. Lync Etiquette and Quick Reference – William De Witt (LAC 1235) This session will discuss hands on do’s and don’ts of using the Lync operating system new to Polk State College. *Innov8 Academy Orientation – Nathan Neuman and Naomi Boyer (LAC 1133) This orientation is prepared for the 2015-16 Innov8 participants that applied and were accepted into the third cohort. The Innov8 Academy is an opportunity for faculty to discover, pioneer, and implement new technologies in their online and face-to-face courses. In this session, faculty participants will receive more in-depth logistical information regarding the summer workshops and participate in collaborative discussions to identify interest, creative ideas, new technologies, and guidelines to the action research projects they choose to pursue. *For 2015-16 Participants Only
