Prof Leo Braack Zoonoses Research Unit, Department of Medical Virology, Medical Sciences Faculty [email protected] Medical and Veterinary Entomology and Ecology Lawrence Edward Oliver (‘Leo’) Braack obtained his PhD (1985) through the University of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. He joined South African National Parks as a research scientist in 1983, where he was responsible for wildlife parasitology, invertebrate research and malaria control. In 1995 he was promoted to Head: Scientific Services in the Kruger National Park, and soon moved to broader management responsibilities as General Manager: Conservation Services. In 2000 he was appointed international coordinator for the three-nation Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. He extended his international experience by joining Conservation International in 2004 as Director: Southern Africa Wilderness Areas, a position he held until 2011. Wanting to return to his earlier research interests, he joined the Zoonoses Research Unit of the University of Pretoria in 2012, with a responsibility for medical/veterinary entomology and ecology. Prof Braack has authored six books and 66 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and has delivered many presentations at international congresses and conferences. Research Prof Braack’s primary research focus concerns the epidemiology of vector- borne diseases and the ecology of arthropod vectors in the transmission of such diseases.
