SPIE Student Chapter, NIT Goa
The Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, known as SPIE opened its Student Chapter at NIT Goa to promote research and disseminate knowledge in the field of Optical Engineering. The Chapter is encouraging students to be a part of SPIE by acquainting them with the ideas and objectives of SPIE.
The SPIE Students chapter NIT Goa conducted its first event for the year 2015-
2016 during 7-9 August 2015 which consisted of technical workshop on “Three
day STTP on Recent Trends in Artificial Intelligence for Big Data” and
competitions as follows

The chapter also conducted a two day grand event during 4-6
September 2015 as “Celebration of the International Year of Light
2015” which consisted of guest lectures for the undergraduate students
of NIT Goa, motivating talks by eminent speakers for the school students
across Goa, Quiz competition for the school students in Ponda, Goa,
along with competitions and project exhibitions.

SPIE – Activities during January
In the month of January 2016, 22nd – 23rd below list of competitions were conducted with an aim to ameliorate the problem solving, thinking, visualizing abilities of students.
The following are the list of competitions:
Mathematica (A Competition testing the mathematical skills)
General Quiz (A Competition testing the General Knowledge)
Techniques (A current technology related quiz competition)
Conundrum (A Logical and riddle solving ability test)
Mind Game (Testing Concentration, thinking and memory abilities)

Outreach:
LMTX Session:
In November 2015, the student volunteers of SPIE Student chapter NIT Goa
conducted Laser Mission TenX half day workshop at Azmane High School,
Neura. The objective of this workshop to encourage and motivate the students
towards science and technology. The session was for a duration of 3 hours
consisting of:
1. An interactive session by Mr.Pankaj Velip on ‘Robotics’ which included
introduction of the topic, with examples and demonstration of the robots
made by undergraduate students.
2. A demonstrative session by Mr. Shubham Sharma and Mr. Nikhil Choudhary
on ‘Project on Tesla Coil’ which had been a project work in the institute. The
introduction and explanation of the project was delivered to the students.
3. It followed by an activity round by Ms. Priya Singh which involved the
students with an ideas session along with fun game on Science and
Technology.
It was an enriching session for around 100 students from standard 6 to
standard 9. These students were well exposed to the recent works to motivate
them to take up Science and Technology as a career.

Young Sparks 2016:
Young Sparks 2016, a one day science and technology event consisting of
talks, launching of the Rashtriya Avishkar programme and the final round of
‘All Goa Science and technology Quiz’ was conducted on 25 January 2016 by
the SPIE Students chapter of NIT Goa. The one day event consisted of
launching of the ‘Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan’, technical talks and the final
round of the ‘ALL GOA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY QUIZ’.
The idea behind RAA is to help promote enquiry-based learning in schools. The
RAA mission was launched by state education Secretary Virendra Kumar and
Director of State council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Mr.
Nagaraj Honnekeri. It was followed by the technical talks for the 8 and 9 grade
students. The speakers for the talks were Mr. Prajyot Mainkar, founder of
ANDROCID Media Pvt. Ltd and Mr. Pranav Pai Vernekar, founder of
Inventron Robotics. The session was about how android software is made and
demonstrated how text messages and calls are sent via android phone. This
exposed the students to core technology.
The quiz session was divided into two rounds, one was the written screening
test conducted in the morning half and the second was the final oral round
hosted by famous Quizmaster Mr. Wilson Vaz. For the quiz, we sent an
invitation to all the 395 high schools across Goa and for the preliminary round
of the quiz, we got an overwhelming response from the schools. Around 1500
students from standard 8th and 9th from different schools across Goa
participated in it which was held on 21 December 2015 in the schools. The
winners of the final round were students of Jawaharlal Navodaya Vidyalaya.
The runners up were Vidya Vikas Academy. The overall one day event proved
successful in reaching out to around 2000 school students across the state of
Goa through the Quiz event as well as the talks.
