VEVCANI CARNIVAL

• One of the most famous village festivals held in the Balkans is the Vevcani Carnival. It is believed that the custom is over 1,400 years old. It is based on old Pagan beliefs and rituals.

• Essentially the Carnival is the ritual of calling after Saint Basil the Great, which coincides with the Twelve Days of Orthodox Christmas and the Orthodox New Year. The festivity is dedicated to Saint Basil the Great.

• The participants of the Carnival are known as “Vasiličari”.

• Vevcani Carnival expresses our traditional culture, contemporary society and it treats topics from today. The annual carnival is a mix of pagan customs translated into modern language.

Cities!!!!!!!!!

• There are three traditional masks: bridegroom and bride, August the Stupid, and musicians.

• Other masks are basically big or small carnival groups which by means of their costumes, gesticulations, and moves usually symbolize and ridicule social events and figures.

• The Strumica Carnival is a centuries-old tradition of the town under the Tsar’s Towers and is directly connected to the religious festival Trimeri. It’s the only manifestation of such kind in Republic of Macedonia dedicated to the engaged girls. The date changes depending on date of Easter and it is always on Tuesday after Ash Monday.

• During the festivity after the carnival procession, the masked groups visit the homes of the engaged girls where among the masked, the girls should recognize their fiance. The Strumica Carnival is a centuries-old tradition and the first written sources come from the Turkish travel writer Evlija Celebija.

• All of the masks have different motives and topics. They represent good and evil, realism and sarcasm, irony, satire, and tradition. The masks are chosen by the participants themselves. Each participant chooses his/her own idea for disguise, while a group disguise represents the idea of the whole group.

• The masks are made by the participants themselves and are very rarely ready-made. Preparations begin very early, usually two, three, or more months before the carnival.

• The whole town lives with an for the carnival!!!
