Production planningProduction planning may be said to be a technique of

forecasting ahead every step in the long process of production, taking them at right time and in right degree and trying to complete operation at maximum efficiency.

Characteristics:1.Inputs like material, men and machines are efficiently

used

2.Factors of production are integrated to use them economically.

Page 5: production planning_ Engineering Management

characteristics3.Division of work is under taken carefully so that every

available element is properly utilized.

4.work is regulated from first stage of procuring raw

material to the stage of finished goods.

5.Questions like what when and how to be

manufactured are decided.

Aims and Objectives Determining the sequence of operations for continous

production

Planning plant capacity for future production programme

Issuing co-ordinated work schedules to concerned persons

Maintaining sufficient inventories to support continuous flow of

production

Evaluating the performance of workshops

Ensures delivery at proper time

Page 7: production planning_ Engineering Management

ImportanceProduction planning is important for the following reasons

For increasing the production-main purpose of production

planning is to arrange inputs. it helps in raising industrial

outputs

For coordinating plant activity-In planning production is

carried out in a number of processes and thus activities are

synchronized for smooth working

Page 8: production planning_ Engineering Management

LimitationsFollowing are the limitations faced by production planning;

Based on assumptions-in case the assumptions prove correct, the planning control go smoothly but if they go wrong procol will go weak.

Rigidity in behavior of employees-it may not help in smoothing flow of work.

Costly-its implementation requires separate person to perform functions.

Dependence on external factors-like climate, change in technology ,govrt control etc

Planning

Planning is deciding is advance what is to be done in

future. An organizational set up is created to prepare

plans and policies. Various charts manuals and

production budgets are also prepared.

A separate department is setup for this work.

Page 11: production planning_ Engineering Management

RoutingRouting is determining the exact path which will be followed

in production .It is the selection of path from where each

unit have to pass before reaching to the final stage.

Page 12: production planning_ Engineering Management

Scheduling

Scheduling is the determining of time and date when

each operation is to be commenced or completed.

It is the last stage of planning before production

occurs and decided WHEN inputs are used.

Page 13: production planning_ Engineering Management

Scheduling

Objectives in scheduling;

*meet customers due date *minimize overtime

*minimize job lateness

*maximize labour & machine utilization

*minimize idle time

*Minimize response time *minimize completion time

Despatching Despatching refers to the process of actually ordering

the work to be done.

It involves putting the plan into effect by issuing

orders.

It is concerned with starting the process and operation

on the basis of route sheets and schedule models.

Inspection Inspection is the process of ensurring whether the

products manufactured are of requisite quality or not.

Inspection is undertaken both of the products and inputs.

It is carried out on at various levels of production process so that predetermined standards of the quality are achieved.

Inspection ensures the maintinance of pre determined quality of products.
