Nanoengineered Materials for Green Energy and Biomedical Applications

Nanoengineered materials have found increasing applications in green energy applications such as fuel cells, lithium–air batteries, and solar cells, and in biomedical applications such as medical diagnostics, disease detection, and drug delivery. A key challenge to these applications is the development of abilities to control the nanoscale structures for achieving the desired functional properties. This report will discuss some recent results of our investigations of sizes, shapes, compositions, and structures of metal and alloy nanoparticles and assemblies for fuel cell catalysis and biomolecular recognition. Brief biography:
Dr. Chuan-Jian Zhong is a full Professor at State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton. After his graduate study at Xiamen University, he was first a Max Planck Society postdoctoral fellow at Fritz-Haber-Institute in Germany with Dr. Karl Doblhofer and Professor Gerhard Ertl (2007-Nobel Laureate), and then a postdoctoral scientist at University of Minnesota in USA with Professor L. Miller. Following his postdoctoral work, he was an associate scientist in US Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University working with Professor Marc Porter for five years before joining the faculty of State University of New York in 1998.
He is a tenured full professor in Chemistry and Materials Science, and currently serves as associate director of the Institute for Materials Research. His research interests are in the interdisciplinary areas of analytical chemistry, materials science, catalysis, electrochemistry, and emerging fields of nanotechnology. Many of his research projects involve nanostructured materials for chemical/biomedical detection and green energy which have been supported by federal funding agencies such as National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and Department of Defense, by nonprofit funding agencies such as Petroleum Research Fund of American Chemical Society and World Gold Council, and by industrial funding agencies such as 3M, Honda and UTC Power.
He was recipients of a number of awards, including National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development Award, SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, SUNY Innovation, Creation and Discovery Award, and 3M Faculty Research Award. He is a Guest Professor of Xiamen University and Hunan University. He serves in the Editorial Board of a new nanotechnology journal (Journal of Nanotechnology). He is founder of a nanotechnology start-up company in New York. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 6 book chapters. He is an inventor of 10 US patents. He has given over 150 invited talks at international conferences, universities and industries.

Abstract:
Structured monodisperse microcapsules have application in a wide range of areas including pharmaceutical, functional foods, cosmetics and catalysis. This presentation provides an overview of the progress in the fabrication of monodisperse microcapsules. It focuses on the production of the designer solid particles using liquid templating approaches. In particular, it reviews the variety of microfluidic devices and the flow-focusing technology used for the fabrication of structured spherical and custom-shaped particles.
Brief biography:
Professor Yinghe He obtained his Bachelor and Master of Engineering degrees in Extractive Metallurgy from Central South University in China, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from The University of Queensland in Australia.
After completing his PhD in 1993, Professor He worked at The
University of Queensland and The University of Adelaide. He joined James Cook University in 2004, where he is currently the Head of School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, which offers degrees up to doctoral level in science and engineering.
In addition to his teaching, leadership and management duties,
Professor He also has keen interests in both fundamental and applied research in a variety of engineering areas including interfacial phenomena, formation of bubbles and droplets, multiphase flow processes, production of designer particles, innovative cathode materials for lithium ion batteries and acid mist formation and control in an electrowinning tankhouse.
Professor He is a Fellow of Institution of Chemical Engineers (FIChemE) and Charted Engineer
(CEng).

Thermal Barrier Coatings of Rare Earth Materials Deposited by Electron Beam-Physical Vapor Deposition

Abstract: Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have very important applications in gas turbines for
higher thermal efficiency and protection of components at high temperature. TBCs of rare earth materials such as lanthanum zirconate (La2Zr2O7, LZ), lanthanum cerate (La2Ce2O7, LC), lanthanum cerium zirconate (La2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)2O7, LZ7C3) were prepared by electron beam-physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD). The composition, crystal structure, cross-sectional morphology and cyclic oxidation behavior of these coatings were studied. A double ceramic layer-thermal barrier coatings (DCL-TBCs) of LZ7C3 and LC could also be deposited with a single LZ7C3 ingot by properly controlling the deposition energy. The failure of DCL-TBCs is a result of the sintering-induced of LZ7C3 coating and the chemical incompatibility of LC and TGO. Since no single material that has been studied so far satisfies all the requirements for high temperature applications, DCL-TBCs is an important development direction of TBCs. Brief biography:
Prof. Dr. Xueqiang CAO. In the period of 1988 to 1993, he studied in Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CIAC-CAS) and got his first PhD on inorganic chemistry. From 1998 to 2002, he studied in Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH of Germany and got his second PhD on materials engineering. Since the May of 2002, he works as a full professor in CIAC-CAS. He is also a guest professor of Changsha Polytechnic University. In the last years, Prof. Xueqiang Cao has got several important scientific programs including Hi-Tech Research and Development Program of China, “One Hundred Talent Scientists of CAS” and Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. In 2005, he got the award of “Top Ten Scientific Experts of Changchun.”
The research of Prof. Xueqiang Cao is focused on the application of rare earths in the energetic materials including the thermal barrier coating materials and the solid oxide electrolytes. One book and seventy scientific papers have been published, such as Thermal Barrier Coating Materials (Science Publishing House, 2006), Adv. Mater., J. Phys. Chem. B, J. Am. Ceram. Soc. and J. Euro. Ceram. Soc., etc.

New Hydrogen Storage Materials and Phase Change Materials Lixian Sun

Studies of economic, highly efficient and safe hydrogen storage materials (HSMs) play an important role in the development of fuel cells in vehicles. The application of phase change materials (PCMs) for solar thermal-energy storage has received considerable attention in recent years due to their high storage density. The promising materials for HSMs including MHx: M= Mg, La, Ni, etc., alanate, borohydride and MOF and PCMs such as microencapsulated PCMs, etc. are presented. Brief biography:

He is a guest professor by Changsha University of Science and Technology, Central South University, Dalian University of Technology, Jinan University etc..
Prof. Dr. Li-Xian Sun is a Counsellor of International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics (IACT). He serves in the editorial board of “Journal of Thermal Analysis & Calorimetry”, “Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics”, “International Journal of Electrochemical Science”, etc.. In recent years, he was recipient of several awards such as "Hundred Talents program" from CAS, Excellent Expert of Dalian City and Science and Technology Award of Liaoning Province, etc.. Prof. Dr. Li-Xian Sun got many research projects from IUPAC, MOST(863, 973), NSFC, etc.. So far, two book chapters, about 20 patents and more than 230 papers in the fields of hydrogen storage/production materials, phase change materials, themochemistry, biosensors, chemometrics and fuel cells, have been published.

Some Industrial Applications of Chemo/bio-sensors

Chemo/bio-sensors for various ions and molecules have seen increased interests in the world. In this presentation, some applications of chemo/bio-sensors including ion-selective electrode (ISE), quartz crystal microbalance (QCMs), acoustic sensor and array, olfactory mimicking, chemical acoustic emission analysis, optical biochip and micro/nano-biosensing system, wireless bio-sensing system in environmental, food, medical industries and related fields were discussed.
Brief biography:
Prof. Zhong Cao, born in 1969, received his Ph.D. from College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Hunan University in 1997. After graduation, he joined the Department of Chemistry, Changsha University of Electric Power, as a Lecturer.
From Oct. 1998 to Jun. 1999, he worked in Department of Polymer Chemistry, National Institute of Materials and Chemical Research (NIMC), Agency of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Japan, as a postdoctoral researcher.
From Jun. 1999 to Jun. 2001, he obtained a fellowship from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and joined Department of Material Science, Toyohashi University of Technology, as JSPS researcher.
From Jul. 2001 to Apr. 2003, he worked in Functional Genomics Center, Department of Research & Development, Life Science Group, Hitachi, Ltd., Japan, as a guest researcher. From May 2003 to Aug. 2004, he changed his job and worked in Life Science Research Center, Central Research Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd., Japan, as a guest researcher.
Since Sept. 2004, he worked in School of Chemistry and Biological Engineering, Changsha University of Science and Technology, as a Professor in 2007. He was awarded “Guest Professor” of Institute of Subtropical Agriculture, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009, and “New Century Excellent Talents in University, Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China” in 2010.
Till now, He has published more than 150 scientific papers, 8 patents, and 1 book. His research interests include chemo/bio sensors, materials chemistry, industrial analysis, food safety inspection, and analytical instruments.
